Fred Thompson, making what could be his last stand in South Carolina, has inched up to third in the latest tracking poll leading up to Saturday's first-in-the-South primary. Thompson has 14 percent in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released this morning, sliding ahead of Mitt Romney, who slipped to 12 percent, even though some of the polling was done after he won the Michigan primary on Tuesday. Romney is chasing delegates in Nevada, whose caucuses are also Saturday, after saying he believes John McCain has South Carolina locked up. McCain held his lead in the new poll, with 29 percent, compared to 22 percent for Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani were tied at 5 percent, according to the poll. A Clemson University poll also gave McCain a 29 percent-22 percent edge over Huckabee, who won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa but hasn't finished better than third since. Thompson, the former US senator from Tennessee, plans to air a 60-second ad during today's evening news across South Carolina in which he talks up his conservative credentials in a folksy way designed to appeal to Southern voters. "I've been a conservative all my life," he says, then citing his "100 percent pro-life" record and asserting that Americans' fundamental rights come "from God, not government." McCain, meanwhile, picked up the endorsement today of the Charleston Post and Courier, which also endorsed him in 2000, when he lost to now-President Bush. The newspaper's editorial board said McCain's record in the eight years since only reinforced its belief that the Arizona senator is the best suited for the presidency.

With all respect... Ya might say no other rocket has gotten into orbit yet... but several have achieved lift off... Duncan never got one BUILT!
Ok...
NURSE!!!
This is the poll where Fred looks the best, and where McCain’s numbers seem more realistic (even losing to Huckabee makes more sense in SC). What do we know about this poll’s methods? Why are the other polls so different?
All the polls are within 5 points of one another.
Either McCain or Huck gets 1st. The other gets 2nd. No poll says otherwise.
Either Romney or Thompson gets a distant 3rd. The other and even more irrelevant 4th.
Same for 5th. Paul or Rudy...
Every poll has different numbers. No poll has any different order.
The fat lady IS Singing already.
nice post!
Sadly, ARG has a bad reputation for accuracy.
“There are Huckabee supporters on another thread saying folks better vote for Huckabee so McCain does not win.”
As much as I dislike both men and believe that neither deserves the nomination nor the Presidency....I DESPISE Juan McCain.
Interesting. And are you in key?
MY, MY, You do have an ugly attitude, now don’t ya....nice way to celebrate your first anniversary at FR !!!!!
May tomorrow bring you many surprises......
FWIW, I am a born-again believer who whole heartedly supports FRed. Didn’t hop on the Huck bandwagon.
Go Fred! You can even take second or third.
Can you say... "Stalking Horse"?
Nah,... I don’t have an ugly attitude... you just can’t handle the truth.
= )
Hopefully Rudy, McCain and Romney split the Rino vote and Thompson wins big in Florida.
Maybe, unless Mitt chooses him as V.P.
WTF?
How is calling Huck a HACK and Fred a phony have ANYTHING to do with my faith getting the best of me?
Are you even READING my posts???
I’ve BEEN saying it for 6 months !!
And in a few thousand MINUTES everyone will be saying it...
..as are the dozens of other life groups who are for Fred Thompson Fred, Jim Robinson, Rush Limbaugh [yes...he clearly thinks Fred is the conservative among the front runners], David Limbaugh, Human Events, Steve King [one of the finest conservatives in the House of Representatives], and countless other good Americans. All have sold out and been compromised.
I guess it all depends on the meaning of the word "conservative". We seem to have many here who have redefined it to mean, "whatever my candidate happens to be for (or) whatever my candidate did in the past (or) whatever feel good socialism makes us appear more compassionate (or) whatever might make a Dem vote with us".
That is a good summation of the current climate.
You think the Fredheads will go for that anymore than the Xtians will go for Huck as VP for Rudy?
Both would be the worst sell out to their bases.
