Thompson Rises to Third in SC Poll

Fred Thompson, making what could be his last stand in South Carolina, has inched up to third in the latest tracking poll leading up to Saturday's first-in-the-South primary. Thompson has 14 percent in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released this morning, sliding ahead of Mitt Romney, who slipped to 12 percent, even though some of the polling was done after he won the Michigan primary on Tuesday. Romney is chasing delegates in Nevada, whose caucuses are also Saturday, after saying he believes John McCain has South Carolina locked up. McCain held his lead in the new poll, with 29 percent, compared to 22 percent for Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani were tied at 5 percent, according to the poll. A Clemson University poll also gave McCain a 29 percent-22 percent edge over Huckabee, who won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa but hasn't finished better than third since. Thompson, the former US senator from Tennessee, plans to air a 60-second ad during today's evening news across South Carolina in which he talks up his conservative credentials in a folksy way designed to appeal to Southern voters. "I've been a conservative all my life," he says, then citing his "100 percent pro-life" record and asserting that Americans' fundamental rights come "from God, not government." McCain, meanwhile, picked up the endorsement today of the Charleston Post and Courier, which also endorsed him in 2000, when he lost to now-President Bush. The newspaper's editorial board said McCain's record in the eight years since only reinforced its belief that the Arizona senator is the best suited for the presidency.

Does a third place finish in SC keep Fred going on to Florida or does he call it a day? I hope as the best conservative in the race he'll keep going, but it's a tough call.

Why wouldn't he keep going?

McCain isn't going to get it, even if he wins SC.

Rudy is ramping up his advertising quite a bit here in Florida.

I despair for the country and the conservatives in it when I see what is happening in SC.

Another reason I can’t wait for these newspapers to fold.

I do not believe Fred will leave the race if by chance he comes in third. I believe he WILL come in FIRST or AT LEAST SECOND. There are Huckabee supporters on another thread saying folks better vote for Huckabee so McCain does not win. The thread is not worth posting on! Huckabee must really be droping like a rock. McCain is being pushed by the MSM to the point where the truth must be he is also droping like a rock! I feel certain that the good folks of South Carolina will show the MSM and their pollsters that they KNOW who the REAL CONSERVATIVE is, and vote for FRED! GO FRED!

Obviously Newt is right. The Reagan Era is over. The voters are looking for something different now.

I would encourage Fred to stay until Super Tuesday at least. I think we will have a brokered convention, and if Fred can show something in the primaries, I think he is the most acceptable candidate to unify the party, eventhough he is not the #1 choice of most. He is probably the #2 choice of more than anyone else.

Why not stay in? John McCain, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani are unacceptable to vast swaths of voters nationwide. Does anyone here see Huckabee taking a blue state? Do you think that Southerners, Midwesterners, pro-life and pro-gun voters will get up off the couch to vote for Rudy? Most real conservatives loath McCain, so who will vote for him in November? Fred is the consistent conservative and the concensus candidate: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/1955621/posts

in 48 hours.... Fred is dead... politically speaking of course.

And by dead, I do not mean JUST because he drops out... no, far from it. He could just drop out and still be OK.

But he won’t just drop...

He will ENDORSE John McCain and thus, for all of you who have been gnashing your teeth in denial about who Thompson really is... and what he really stands for... YOU will be the ones calling him “dead”.

And worse...
