An armed citizen surprised four men who robbed him at gunpoint last week.

After being ordered to his knees, Russel Olofson warned the men that "they should think about it," according to an Orlando police report released this week.

A private investigator with military training, Olofson, 24, told police the robbers snatched his cell phone and a wallet containing his concealed-weapon permit shortly before 10 p.m. Friday outside Ridge Club Apartments.

After the robbers took his items, Olofson stood up, drew his Springfield XD sub-compact 9 mm handgun "and fired two rounds toward male #1 with the silver handgun, possibly striking him," the report states. "Males #2, #3, and #4 then ran southeast . . . and male #1 ran northeast . . ."

A search by police quickly turned up a pistol likely used in the holdup, the report said.

The .45-caliber Ruger pistol and clothing believed to have been worn by male 1 were found in the backyard of a home on Alrix Drive, reports state. The serial numbers on the pistol had been scratched off, a common sign the weapon may have been stolen.

The cell phone and wallet were not recovered. The wallet contained an Iraq Embassy badge, an Army contractor's ID card, Olofson's drivers license and a credit card. Anyone who finds the wallet or knows the identities of the robbers is asked to call Crimeline at 407-423-8477.

Olofson...was not injured...

It is a fine pistol. Never fired a Glock so I cannot compare. The point and shoot ergonomics is pertty cool. I was at the range one day with my brother and his wife. She is deciding what to buy and wanted to check several out. One of the shooters suggested she hold a pistol on target, close her eyes, drop her arm to her waist and then bring it onto target before opening her eyes. She tried this with several pistols that guys had. Most were aimed high or low except the XD-9, which was dead on target.

The subcompact size is pretty cool (although there are smaller ones)and I’m actually debating getting an ankle holster for it.

I kind of figured it was.

As it turned out, a few more folks found out that Florida (and some other States) have stated in law that we the little people can protect ourselves.

You could have saved yourself a lot of trouble by not insulting him in the first place....

Now what kind of a world would that be? :)

Springfield XD sub-compact 9 mm handgun “and fired two rounds toward male #1

Just two rounds fired? Jammed? I didn't know Ruger made a derringer?

The idea is to avoid a confrontation through situational awareness. Criminals look for an easy mark. Being on the alert would have allowed these criminals to be spotted and put them on notice. If SA and taking the necessary steps to avoid a confrontation fail, then the victim should have been prepared to defend himself as soon as he was in fear for his life. Now the perps have his wallet and know where he lives. They also have enough information to steal his identity. The victim probably handled this very poorly.

You make a very good point. Although, I suppose it’s possible that the perps were hiding and had the element of surprise. I really don’t like the idea of obeying an order to get down on your knees!

That is sweet. I was considering a Walther but want something small to complement my Glock 23.

Me too...I think? I have an XD9...don’t know about the “sub compact” part; mine has a 4-inch barrel. I like it a lot...it is very accurate.

The sub is a 3” barrel.

I think "very poorly" is harsh. We do not know the finite details of the situation. He is a military trained. I expect his actions were as opportunistic as they could have been given the situation.

He is alive and successfully used potentially lethal force to stop the attack. I think he at least handled the situation well. This might be the only case where I would not scoff at comments about his not having effective aim enough to kill. After all he is military trained.

I’m torn between a 1911 or the XD45...I used to shoot every Saturday at an indoor range in Arizona and I am very impressed with my XD-9; accurate, easy to clean and after about 3,000 rounds, never a hang-up. Good gun.

I also had my Sig P229 in .40S&W and in .357Sig and shot the heck out of it too...it took me a little while to get the Sig up to the grouping I had with the 9mm, but the XD9 had custom night vision sights that were really bright and I think made the difference. I liked the night sights because in the middle of the night I could easily zero-in on the exact location and orientation of the pistol in total darkness. The Sig is a nice shooter.

Once again, the victim will become the felon.

While he might be chided for needing a firearms refresher, I don't think he'll be vilified. Not in Florida and certainly not in crime ridden Orlando.

After all he is military trained.

That doesn't mean a durn thing. If he's a clerk or in personnel he might have gotten an M16 qualification in basic but he won't be in any way an expert. OTOH, the comments he made right before accomplishing his draw: You might want to think about this.... Seems to indicate that he knew exactly what he was about. Now lets suppose he's not a REMF (Rear Eschelon Motherless Fellow to be PC) suppose he's an infantry guy. Maybe Ranger qualified. At the other end of the spectrum this story better NEVER get back to his unit! They'll HOUND him mercilessly for not neatly drilling each thru the head -- twice. He'll get all the prank gifts at parties... They may put him in charge of "Health & Welfare" for perpetrators.... or something equally "cute." Trust me, I've seen it personally.

My next HG purchase will be XD-45.

And a fine choice it is. With two spare mags you can have 40 rounds to take care of business.

I really want to get a 1911. But the practical side of me that rationalizes a $500 purchase says the XD-45 can be fun but is versatile as an easy home defense and carry weapon.

Has Springfield introduced the short barreled .45 in XD yet?

I heard there was one comming out.
