Rush Limbaugh and Fred Thompson
National Ledger ^ | 01/17/08 | Chris Davis

Posted on 01/17/2008 11:23:00 AM PST by Route66

...You can hear it in Limbaugh’s voice and see it in his face. He badly wants to throw the full weight of conservatism behind that candidate. He so desperately wants to that his teeth probably hurt. He’s waiting, waiting for someone to take the lead. Get noticed. He’s waiting for someone to give him the go ahead to cream the opposition.

You can hear the excitement in Rush’s voice when he talks about the South Carolina primary. It’s “The Passion.” The passion of conservatism emerging when he talks about that primary. Why, you ask? Because, for the first time since the primaries have begun, conservative Republicans will be voting for fellow conservative Republicans...

...Rush Limbaugh believes in conservatism. It’s engrained in his soul. He introduced me to it, and now it’s engrained in my soul. I can recognize it like a tick on a white dog. It’s as obvious as that.

I recognize it in Senator Fred Thompson, and so does Rush Limbaugh. He’s hinted, he’s implied, and he’s even begged conservatives to see what he sees in Fred Thompson. He sees conservatism, the same kind of conservatism he saw in Ronald Reagan. He doesn’t want long, bloated policy. He wants simple, effervescent conservatism for Americans to unfold before their very eyes...

>> Mitt Romney is manufactured and rehearsed?

Yes.

>> How about he’s just “polished and has a firm grip on the issues”?

There is a fine line between “polished” answers, and scripted answers meant to tell us what we want to hear — as opposed to what the candidate actually believes. His “manufactured” status stems from credibility problems from the discord between his words and his record in Mass.

>> I would support Romney over McCain or Huckabee with no reservations because the guy is a first class businessman, who has created jobs, built companies, understands economics, and comes from the private sector and is smart as a whip.

I didn’t say I liked McCain or Huckabee — I said I thought Romney was over-rehearsed. I don’t think I particularly compared him to McCain or Huckabee.

>> Romney’s head and shoulders above most of these professional politicians.

I wouldn’t say he’s “head and shoulders” above them. He’s got credibility problems. He’s way behind Thompson.

My opinion — if Thompson doesn’t sieze control of the race in the next few weeks, the GOP will be split all the way until the convention. It’ll be entirely a matter of priorities — the national security conservatives will rally behind Giuliani and McCain, the fiscal conservatives behind Romney, and the social conservatives behind Huckabee.

Then, we’ll have a brokered convention — and hopefully we’ll get Fred Thompson anyway.

H

Frankly, at some point, trying to force your views on Rush, when he clearly will not do so himself, is disrespectful.

UNLESS...you are a former owner of a venture capital firm who has just purchased Clear Channel Communications, the largest radio station owner in the country, and of course one could NEVER suggest you would have ANY INFLUENCE on policies of your former firm, who coincidentally has a wholly owned subsidiary of Clear Channel, Premiere Radio Networks, which is the largest syndication company in the United States, and is home to Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and many others. Sean Hannity recently signed a large multi-market contract with Clear Channel, as well.

The fact that you are running for the nomination for POTUS, and if elected would be a powerful "friend" in Washington, (think FCC) would never enter into it. /sarc

A FR thread on the buyout here:

Mitt Romney's VC Firm to Buy Clear Channel

As a poster on the linked thread said, "So much for Rush."

there was no RELEVANT conservative in the talking head circles.

Seriously, the etherial conservatives were USELESS before Reagan. They clink their country club banter but did NOTHING in the real world.

I call them “I got mine” conservatives. They made their way and no longer cared if the world burned to the ground.

Fred a distant fourth?! Don’t be surprised is Thompson finishes as high as second or even pulls this thing out on Saturday. I’m voting for him early!

I have no doubt he will pull it out.

Wow. Rush didn’t even ENDORSE Mitt, he simply said he wouldn’t endorse anybody, and the Fred supporters are claiming he’s a sellout?

I’ll be glad when this election is over.

I don't think this is TOO far off the mark....

Fred is the one candidate that can bridge all the gaps between factions...what I cannot understand is why more do not apparently see this already?

I’m sorry, you are correct, I was going on the assumption that we agreed that the “conservative” answer wasn’t that more and more people get free health care handouts paid for with our tax dollars.

Increasing government expenditures for people’s health care would of course be an option. I would argue it’s not the conservative one.

In 1994, he said he would support the AWB. In the debate you cite, he said again that he would have supported it.

He does not support a new AWB. There’s a press release posted to FR, December 31, 2007, that details exactly what he supports, and it includes a detailed description of what he considers weapons of unusual lethality.

Well, I think it HIGHLY unlikely that Rush would endorse anyone else, given the circumstances...and given that Slick Willard has been planning this run for years, it certainly wouldn't be at all surprising that his influence on his former partners at Bain would be used in his own best interest.

There are certainly others who look at this Bain/Clear Channel deal with suspicion.

Unusual for you not to jump on something like this with all guns blazing, Charles...something you would rather not have discussed at length?

Fredsters, see my post #262.

No problem. just a common courtesy. I usually don’t post something I’ve read in another thread written by another person unless I am personally claiming it, and willing to defend it as my own beliefs — and then I’d still ping the original poster in case they wanted to come and defend their own opinions.

But usually I don’t post other people’s thoughts, I let them decide where they want to do so. Once in a while I’ll put a LINK over to someone else’s thoughts, that way people can go make comments in the original thread.

But there are people here who talk about other posters all the time without pinging them. There doesn’t seem to be a hard-and-fast rule, but I always felt that was like talking about people behind their backs.

You might try often as well, :-)

And check your tires before you drive off, because Huckabee told his supporters to let your air out....

As an avowed Huckabee supporter, you know this information how?????

Could it be you say this about Thompson due to the threat he poses? No, couldn’t be??

I don’t know what you mean by “jump on this with all guns blazing”. I hardly think I have to defend Rush Limbaugh here against charges that he would somehow change his message because of who owns Clear Channel.

But I will be glad when some sanity returns here. I didn’t know there was an entire thread where people questioned if conservative talk show hosts were telling the truth or not based on some capital management firm investing in a company that provides the stations which air their shows.

Anyway, right now I’m trying to clear the path for Thompson as much as possible, so there’s no excuses in the way of Victory on Saturday in South Carolina. If that means going easy on the wild theories being floated, I can live with it.

Actually, what it would mean is a break in your non-stop shilling for Mitt...that would be a nice surprise. I could certainly live with THAT. ;)

SC is irrelevant. They have no delegates. This is like the pre-season. Get over it.

If you listen to Rush you will know he is not going to endorse. Get over it.

You’ve just proven why we are going to lose this election and RINO’s are the leading candidates.

Revisionism has infested this party.

again, SC is irrelevant. Fred needed to show up in FL. Rudy is likely to win Florida. He seems to be the only guy that actually figured out that Florida primary is NOT ON January 29th. Last week, over the weekend, and on Monday Rudy has been here to see big crowds. Fred has been a no show.
