Hey, Mike Huckabee wasn't the only one speaking in church Sunday. Barack Obama was in Vegas speaking at a church there, and Rudy Giuliani spoke at a huge mega-church in Florida. Read below from The Associated Press:
With his plan for winning the GOP presidential nomination riding largely on a Florida victory at the end of the month, Rudy Giuliani asked an evangelical congregation for prayers instead of votes Sunday and quoted scripture to evoke a message of hope and perseverance.
"I'm not coming here to ask for your vote," he said. "That's up to you and it's not the right place. But I am coming here to ask you for something very special and more important: I'm asking for your prayers."
While other Republican candidates are focused on Tuesday's Michigan primary, Giuliani is following a strategy of pushing for a January 29 victory in Florida he hopes will propel him toward a dominant showing on February 5, when more than 20 states hold primaries and caucuses, and then on to the nomination.
Once a strong front-runner in national polls, the former New York City mayor has fallen well behind the three candidates jockeying for a victory in Michigan, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee.
"I've faced odds that were at times seemingly impossible, situations where people had given up hope, but we didn't listen to the doubters, we didn't listen to the naysayers," Giuliani told several thousand worshippers at El Rey Jesus Church in Miami.
"Fear not, be strong, and of good courage," he added, quoting the Bible. The church, which has a congregation of 10,000 people, was his first stop on a three-day bus tour through Florida.
OK. I know all you Giuliani bashers see Giuliani speaking at a church and have all these unkind thoughts. Repent!
Seriously though whatever you think of Giuliani and some of his personal issues, when he says he needs people's prayers, I'm sure he's being very genuine. When it comes to winning in Florida, he could sure use some answered prayer.
Giuliani's biggest threat could be a steamrolling John McCain. Think about it. Giuliani has based his campaign on fighting terrorism and electability. John McCain can match him on both of those items. But if McCain wins in Michigan and South Carolina, it may be so much momentum that Giuliani all of a sudden gets into a world of trouble with McCain in Florida and Feb. 5.
"Fear not, be strong, and of good courage," he added, quoting the Bible. The church, which has a congregation of 10,000 people, was his first stop on a three-day bus tour through Florida."---
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rudy turns a bible verse encouraging Christians enduring persecution for the cause of Christ into a political rally cry for his failing campaign.
Yup. That's what the Holy Spirit was talking about with these words of divine encouragement to the persecuted Church: if your political campaign is failing and your strategy unfolding, "Fear not, be strong, and of good courage." Yup, that's what was meant......
Imagine the fits in the Conservative media like National Review if this was Mike Huckabee -- Imagine if this was Mitt Romney, and how the press would destroy him -- Just IMAGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose. - William Shakespeare
More specifically, from The Merchant of Venice (appropriate for some guy named Giuliani), Act I, Scene III:
ANTONIO: Mark you this, Bassanio,
The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.
An evil soul, producing holy witness,
Is like a villain with a smiling cheek,
A goodly apple rotten at the heart
O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath!
E-mail/ping me if you want on/off the list! SPREAD THE WORD!!!
This is just amazing.
Rudy Giuliani is a man with no ethical core, no conscience, and no moral inhibitions. This is the campaign of a desperate and dastardly man who will do and say anything - ANYTHING - in his insatiable lust for power. Life of our youngest children, the Constitution, Scripture — there is nothing so sacred that he is unwilling to bastardize it authoritarian-like to impose his personal desires upon every single person he has the power to do so to. There is no standard but his own - everything else is malleable.
This man should be kept as far away from the most powerful office in the world as possible.
Times like this are the reason I proudly run the "Stop Rudy" ping list. In this one battle, I know that I fight the good fight.
Shakespeare had a source.
So did he then pass Cesare's proverbial plate?
Of course he did, but Matthew 4:6 is a lot less entertaining and less poignant for someone of Italian descent.
For those that care, Matthew 4:6 as seen in the KJV:
4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in [their] hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Yeah, but was Jesus ever as far behind in the polls as Rudy is? :=)
You've got to be kidding. I means he needs their votes, what esle would Ruby the unrepentant sinner be praying for?
Personally, I don’t like to see Republicans campaigning in churches—any church! Let’s leave that for the Democrats.
If Rudy does get the nomination, watch Hillary or Obama get a bunch of black pastors to bash Rudy’s moral failings.
Check this out. It appears Rudy’s house may have been built by illegal aliens.

[snip] Visits to several ongoing Farrell jobs in December found a work force that was entirely Latino except for the project manager directly employed by Farrell. At one major site on Halsey Lane in Bridgehampton, an Ecuadorian who was working on the roof of a guesthouse insisted that he and his two non-English-speaking companions were legal. Employed by a roofing company called Cedar Design, he said that he thought “all of the other people here are illegal.” Asked how he knew that, the worker said that the Americans stopped working at noon on Friday, three hours before the The Voice visit. Pressed as to who was illegal, he pointed in the direction of a dozen or so people, all of whom appeared to be Latino, who were working on the foundation of the main house.
Sister Margaret Smyth, a Catholic nun who works with undocumented workers in the Hamptons, said that she’d recently won a $1,000 claim against a subcontractor, Hampton Brick Works, who hired a bricklayer to build a 42-foot chimney for a Farrell house and then refused to pay him. The bricklayer was undocumented. Farrell acknowledged that he used the contractor, though he said he’d only recently begun giving the firm business. Brick chimneys are a signature feature of Farrell’s homes, and Giuliani’s house has three of them. Tom Wedell, a leader of the Anti-Illegal Immigrant Association, says that he’s seen Hampton Brick Works come to the 7-Eleven store in Southampton and pick up illegal workers......
Farrell says that Giuliani first came to him “a year and a half to two years” before he bought the house, inquiring about a possible purchase. Farrell says he got to know Giuliani by driving him around to other sites, and that Giuliani worked his way up from the $1 million price range to the $3.2 million that he ultimately paid. That kind of protracted contact gave Giuliani plenty of opportunity to make the same sort of observations about Farrell’s workforce as the The Voice did over the course of a couple of weeks.
And as to his Florida Firewall strategy - he really screwed the pooch here, proves he's a dimwit and mentally unfit for office. The GOP stripped FL half of it's delegates for moving the primary date up. Moron Rooty is banking all for a whooping fifty-seven, that's 57 delegates!
So out of the 1,191 he'd need to win the nomination, IF he won FL he'd 'only' need another ... 1,114!
Come Feb 6th, it'll be Rudy who?
Notice that Giuliani is hitting largely Hispanic congregations, while igonoring black and white churches.
That's 1,134 delegates Rooty would need for the nomination if he won FL's 57 delegates, not 1,114 as I posted.
You are right, however, that everyone would be outraged if this were Huckabee. I remember in the 70's when many of my fellow Southern Baptists were all excited about Jimmy Carter being SB too. Of course that was perfectly okay with the media. Now it is a scandal if SBs are happy to have another SB candidate. Even Clinton tapped into that. So did Gore. Of course they didn't seem genuine and so it didn't work so well, but still... The problem people have is with GENUINE faith. So Guiliani offers words of wisdom without even meaning to. "Fear not, be strong and of good courage..."
Just about anything would be my guess.
"I believe in God ... I pray and ask him for help.
I pray like a lawyer. I try to make a deal get me out
of this jam, and Ill start going back to church."-- Rudy Giuliani
To me it shows he will pander to them, something that I don't necessarily equate with a lack of hostility. The two are not mutually exclusive and Rudy has shown that he will use most anyone to advance himself personally, politically and professionally.
“Dear Lord, send us righteous, life-affirming leaders, and help us get them elected.”
Sorry, Rudy, that’s the best I could do. I sadly think it won’t be much help for you.
Maybe. Okay sure, there is some pandering to this. I just also think Guiliani is not hostile to religious people and that is why they are not hostile to him. Hey, he even got Pat Robertson’s endorsement, didn’t he? I like Guiliani. I won’t ever vote for him because I don’t agree with his liberal views.
