It’s the Way He Lost That Bothers Me
The Minority Report ^ | 16 January 2008 | .cnI redruM

Posted on 01/16/2008 6:33:30 AM PST by .cnI redruM

John McCain did America a favor last night and lost the Michigan Primary to Mitt Romney. That was thoughtful of him, because I believe his legislative history on taxation and immigration would make him a potentially detrimental US President. However, I’m bothered by the manner in which he lost last night’s Michigan Primary.

John McCain lost because he told people the truth. He explained to Michigan that their political leadership, their unions and their corporate executives had spent the last 30 years trashing the Michigan economy. He told them that they were not going to get back the jobs that the automotive industry had steadily lost there since the late 1960’s. He told them it was time to get over that unfortunate fact of life and move on.

Mitt Romney, on the other hand, went Pander Bear and promised them $20Bil in Federal Assistance. The voters got over John McCain, and moved over to Mitt Romney. It was GOP socialism that won the Michigan Primary.

“I’ve got cars in my bloodstream,” he said the day before the election.

If Mitt Romney thinks that sending $20Bil to Michigan is any more logical or good for the economy than buying 1 trillion gallons of ethanol from the Yeoman Caucus Farmers of Iowa, he’s been sucking too much hydrocarbon pollution from an automotive tailpipe. The good news scenario involves this pledge being similar in chemical composition to that which the male bovine leaves behind when he squats briefly after eating.

This sort of political butt kissing gives America bridges to nowhere; both metaphorical and real. Every Republican hates earmarks, but the ones in Iowa think ethanol subsidies are “different.” The ones in Michigan think bailing out the Iacoccas who drive American auto makers into the ditch is equally “different.” Even Mr. Libertarian, Ron Paul has a bunch of shrimp fisherman who exhibit traits which are similarly “different.”

John McCain has faults in both temperament and ideology that make him less amenable to doing well as President than Fred D. Thompson, but when he goes to Iowa and condemns ethanol, and he goes to Michigan and condemns Chrysleresque bail-outs of inefficient manufacturing firms, he fights for the American taxpayer. People all over America get up way too early in the morning and come home later than they’d like to at night. Both Mom and Dad have to work to make it by and the children sometimes actually see Mommy and Daddy less than three hours on a typical weekday.

When John McCain tells Michiganders and Iowans that these hard working Americans do not deserve to be screwed against the wall for their bull manure subsidies, he continues his honorable and courageous service to his nation. I’ve stated my reasons why I’ll vote, blog for and endorse Republican candidates other than John McCain. However, to see him lose against specifically because he cared too much for America’s future to promise the greedy short term pork pills is just wrong.

There is no excuse for a conservative party to vote against John McCain, Fred Thompson or even the execrable Ron Paul for fighting against pork. Sometime in the not too distant future, we all will end up paying for these boondoggles. Mitt Romney won’t have a plan to bail us out when that tragic day comes to pass.

Socialism always wins elections, even GOP Primary elections.

The writer makes a very good point. However, I’m STILL glad McCain was tripped up in MI.

You are quite right that McCain lost in Michigan because he committed the crime of telling the truth about the Michigan economy going into the tank. But you are also right that McCain's loss is good for the Republican Party and for the nation.

That's what he gets for telling the truth. Romney promised to lead Michigan out of it's one-state depression....and the idiots voted for him, though the presidenty of the United States doesn't have that power, because of the durned Constitution.

Did anyone bother to ask Romney how exactly he was going to "get those jobs back"?

If I have to pick my evils ... I’d rather have Mitt’s tan Mcpain’s. I’d rather not have my country overrun by ILLEGAL aliens made legal because he wants the Hispanic vote. I despise his “work” in Washington - McCain/Feinbery and other socialistic hook-ups. McPain doesn’t get it. McPain has NO business experience to speak of ... it is possible, maybe remotely possible that Mitt can properly use federal money to pump these guys up ... however what concerns me MORE is why the PEOPLE down and out haven’t done something about it!

Tell me about it! The sad truth is this: if most Americans really understood our Constitution, they’d burn it in the street.

A few thoughts from the formally great state of Michigan:

1. Our biggest problem/obstacle to growth is Jennifer Granholm who has done absolutely NOTHING during her unfortunate tenure as governor. Our biggest export right now from the state is our young people, who are moving out in droves, my son included. Seems that the rest of the country is booming compared to Michigan. 2. The American auto industry will never return to is former glory, with or without a government bailout. Those of us with half a brain realize this. It is time to put a period behind it and move on. 3. I'm glad McCain lost. 4. Are there still people out there who think that upon arrival in Washington that any politician will keep their promises, willingly or unwillingly?

What I find intriguing is that businessman Mitt won, but the state wouldn’t elect another businessman a few years ago.

Yes, he is. He might just do something positive there. Your points are well made. This is a sour grapes article.

SC will divide them up based on percentages of vote. It wont mean much, but FL is a big winner take all state. SC will garner a few headlines for a day, but then you have 10 days before the big one in FL. The momentum from FL will be big for the big day the following week (Feb 5th).

I couldn’t disagree more with your premise here redrum.

McCain lost Michigan because he didn’t win the Republican vote. Period. No different than in 2000, except this time cross over voters - IE Dems and so called Indies - were busy this time around yanking Hillary’s chain in accordance with Obama’s request.

Romney won because unlike McCain, he hasn’t gone OUT OF HIS WAY for the last eight years to piss off the Conservative base like McCain has.

The story nobody is writing today is the one about McCain’s unbelievable political TIN EAR.

Consider for a moment McCain knew in 2000 why he lost the nomination. He knew it was because Republicans didn’t trust him. He knew in particular Conservatives loathed him.

So, what did McCain do SINCE 2000 to alleviate this?

He went on Chris Mathews and based Conservatives. He co sponsored CFT with leftwingnut Feingold. He voted against the Bush tax cuts TWICE - consider where the economy would be today with them.

And then he co sponsored with Ted ‘Drown Em!’ Kennedy an massive AMNESTY PLAN.

McCain didn’t lose because of the economy, nor because of anything Romney said in the past four days in Michigan.

He lost the Republican Primary in Michigan because he lost Republican voters in 2000, and spent the last eight years ‘paying them back’ with the above legislative efforts Republicans rank and file voters found appalling.

How do you know why people voted against McCain? If I lived in Michigan, I would have voted for either Thompson or Romney, because I think they're the best (least bad) candidates, and I wouldn't have even considered voting for McCain, his telling the truth about this one thing notwithstanding.
