We begin by recalling the profound words of Ronald Reagan at the Conservative Political Action Conference Feb. 15, 1975: A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers. We believed that then, and we believe it now. The issue for us -- and for the conservative community -- boils down to which of the candidates is most representative of the fundamental conservative principles we believe in. The answer is Fred Thompson.

As a Huckabee supporter, I respectfully disagree with your “commie populist” assessment.
Agreed
I guess Fred thought it best to not do the one-to-one debate. At any rate, Fred knew more about his situation than any of us outsiders did.
SC was in an uproar over the McCain/Graham Shamnesty, or Grahamnesty as some called, and yet we seem poised to give McCain the win here.
Hopefully Fred gained some points last night and can gain even more over the next week.
I would have liked to seen it, and it wouldn’t have spawned the level of vitriol that we see in these posts among supporters of different candidates, since the primaries were so distant at that time.
I really think it would have brought ALL the issues to the forefront.
Once the issues were defined, we could go forward with a coherent Republican agenda, that all of us can get behind.
Even now, I think it would allow US to define who we are, what we stand for, and what we have in mind for the future of the country. The “who wins/loses” thing really isn’t important to me. WE (the voters) LOSE so long as the MSM, and pundits define us.
IMO, right now our message is muddled and undefined, while the Democrats are running on a single, unified platform (albeit one based on air).
You aren't being fair to Huckabee. He knows the truth. He just has trouble passing it through his lips.
Time zone? I just saw another posting for the Human Events endorsement... you think there's another one?
But wasn't "our failure in Iraq" the main topic then?
Who would have refereed the debate?
Most of those in the focus group last night that said the same thing came into the room as Ron Paul supporters. Most of those saying the same thing here today have a bias for another candidate, I suspect. It's designed to discourage Fred's supporters. This race has just begun, and there is still a lot of time for Fred to pull this off.
A class by himself? You're forgetting Ron Paul.
I don’t think there would need to be a referee; at least not then.
Both men are mature enough to respect one another, and conduct a reasonable, rational, and intelligent “conversation”. I really liked the “Fox Republican Forum” the other night. It would have been nice if there hadn’t been so many at one time.
It’s this “How many soundbites can I make in 1:30” style of debate that promotes the candidates to do what they do.
He was saying, I thought, that the people are being sold a bill of goods about Mike Huckabee, and many have lined up at the counter not fully informed about who he is as a politician. It was time for an inventory check.
Look up the meaning of the word “fan.” You are not one when it comes to Fred. Saying you are a fan of Fred to make your criticism look like honest concern is not honest criticism.
I agree. That woman toward the front, who dismissively kept saying it was too late, seemed like a plant.
The folks in the audience who said Thompson is finally gathering his ideas together obviously don't realize that he has held most of his ideas for a long time.
If it really seemed to them that Fred was finally getting his thoughts together, it's only because he wasn't given the time to speak out in previous debates.
Let me paraphrase my previous post in this thread:
.....Thompson always had (for me) the aura of authority; a person above the fray; untarnished by the stain of petty politicking; almost larger than life (like Reagan), but last nights performance brought [my image of] him down to the level of the common politician.
This really hurt my mental image of him.
I'm being honest. Have I given you a reason to believe that I am anything but?
Actually yes, and I said why in the post to which you replied. You said you were a "FAN" when you clearly are not in order to give your criticism of Fred an aura of concern. Now perhaps you were only exagerating your positive opinion of FT, but exagerations are not honest expressions of truth.
BTW I didn't say that you hid that you were a Huckabee supporter. The fact that you told the truth there does not take away from the fact that you exagerated your opinion of Fred.
Alas even some that are brilliant can be fooled by brilliance...
Unfortunately, your cynicism is very common on FR.
I hope it will abate soon.
