Huckabee retreats on birthright citizenship
Washington Times ^ | January 9, 2008 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 01/09/2008 6:45:10 AM PST by 3AngelaD

Mike Huckabee yesterday contradicted his own top immigration surrogate, announcing he will not support a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to illegal aliens.

It was a stark reversal after The Washington Times reported that James Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, said Huckabee promised to pursue an amendment to the Constitution. In an article in yesterday's editions, Huckabee's spokeswoman did not challenge the former Arkansas governor's statements to Gilchrist...But by yesterday afternoon, Huckabee had backed away..."I do not support an amendment to the Constitution that would prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens. I have no intention of supporting a constitutional amendment to deny birthright citizenship," Mr. Huckabee said...

The Times reported that Gilchrist, in a conversation while campaigning with Mr. Huckabee last week, pinned down the Republican presidential candidate on various immigration stances, including how he would address what most legal scholars see as the 14th Amendment's guarantee of citizenship to any person born in the United States, except for diplomatic situations.

Gilchrist said Huckabee promised to bring a test case to the Supreme Court...and would press Congress to pass an amendment to the Constitution.... Huckabee also said on CNN that he hasn't given much thought to the issue of birthright citizenship. But he previously had taken a position in an interview with The Times in Iowa in August.

"I would support changing that. I think there is reason to revisit that, just because a person, through sheer chance of geography, happened to be physically here at the point of birth, doesn't necessarily constitute citizenship," he said at the time, according to the audiotape of the interview. "I think that's a very reasonable thing to do, to revisit that."

Yep. There's another thread about that one!

Another thread on the dog killing, (and subsequent cover-up by Huck), and the thread about the gun at the airport.

Sounds like a set up piece to me. Indeed, the reporter should have talked directly to Huckabee. Huckabee is asking for this type of stuff since he’s running on a shoestring and doesn’t have a war room.

As for most of you posting here. I’m stating to ask myself: who are the real sheeple? Whether Huckabee or many other candidates, you are easily manipulated.

Fire away.

Hi SJB.....I’ve heard that “Tyson” Huckabee thingy....I know that’s related to Tyson “we are illegals employers” Chicken...but, has huckabee enacted any laws or gone out of his way to make it easier for Tyson to do that? (Honest and sincere question...I know it’s the feds are usually go after employers for hiring illegals, not state governors...not that they shouldn’t be...then we can easily point to Ahnold for his malfeasance in that area, as well.)

Just from an observation, it doesn’t seem like Huckabee has his own house in order....well, we’ll see if his son straightens out. I genuinely hope so.

This is just the beginning of the Huckabee fizzle, and his followers will be looking for another prolife evangelical to fill the void. Hunter fits that bill, no one else in the race is evangelical.

The GOP doesn’t get it. They need to let this faction find a home. The amount of invective aimed at evangelicals is surprising, but then everyone wants their votes.

Huckabee has surged because he won a couple of debates and he’s got evangelical support. If a quick rise can happen to the liberal pro-life evangelical Huckster, it can happen to the conservative pro-life evangelical Hunter.

Prolife evangelicals will be very comfortable in Hunter’s camp, since he’s a prolife evangelical staunch conservative.

Ahnold is just a lesser of 2 evils. He has been a failure
in my humble opinion.

What does that mean? Where is the logic in what you are saying? Your “arguments” are pointless and divorced from reality. Birthright citizenship has nothing to do with trigonometry, either. So what? Do you really think that the welfare, food stamp and WIC programs are going to disappear? You really need to find out what you are talking about, WORK ON THOSE WEAK CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS, and do your homework.

Do you really think birthright citizenship is going to disappear?

You can either deny citizenship to innocent newborns or attack the root of the problem, and stop illegal immigration and prevent them from receiving those benefits.

How has that never occurred to you?

Let me simplify this for you as much as possible. Birthright citizenship lures illegal immigrants into the county. It is a cause, not an effect. You might try: “Foundations of Inductive Logic” by Roy Harrod.

Anybody surprised by this one?

Of course not. Big Government Conservatives need "clients" as much as Big Government Liberals do.

Huck and Rudy...what a pair....

Check this on Rudy. I can’t believe Vento would endorse Rudy! He needs educated on this one.

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/01/08/giuliani-spanish/

Like many of the other GOP presidential candidates, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani had tried to portray himself as tough on undocumented immigration. One of his favorite applause lines has been to stress English-only policies:

The final end result about becoming a citizen — you should be able to have to read English, write English, and speak English if you want to become a citizen.

Nevertheless, Giuliani wants the votes of Floridians who speak Spanish. Today, he has released a new campaign ad en español to air on at least three Spanish-language television stations in Miami. At the end of the ad — called Liderazgo (Leadership) — Giuliani says, “Soy Rudy Giuliani y apruebo este mensaje (I’m Rudy Giuliani and I approved this message).”

Last fall, the owner of Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurant Geno’s Steaks endorsed Giuliani. Vento became notorious for posting a sign in his restaurant that read: “This is America. When Ordering Please Speak English.” He also once told a reporter that Mexicans carry disease into the United States because they “play and drink out of the same water.”

Giuliani wholeheartedly embraced Vento’s endorsement, posting it on the campaign’s official YouTube site. Giuliani also personally went to Philadelphia and embraced Vento. “Whenever I’m at Geno’s, I order in English,” he told a reporter.

Will Vento post a similar sign for Giuliani? “This is America. When Campaigning, Please Speak English.”

So, a 9 month pregnant woman sneaks across the boarder to deliver the baby, both she and the father of the baby are NOT US citizens. Why is that we are some how not compassionate for denying this baby citizenship? The children of foreign diplomats that are born here don’t get citizenship. Is that mean to them? If they baby had been born a few miles further south the question would not come up. This is not about compassion. If the ‘innocent baby’ wants to be a citizen when it grows up, fine, it can come the legal way. Until then it can go back to the country it was conceived in, back to the country its mother carried it to term in, back to the country, it’s parents were from, back to the country it’s ancestors were from, back to it’s home. To get rid of illegal immigration you have to get rid of the INCENTIVE to sneak here. Get rid of the ability to get jobs and get rid of this cheating means which parents of anchor-babies are using to bring their entire extended family here. All because the managed to dash across the boarder just before giving birth. They made it a few miles north, so therefor to be ‘compassionate’ we have to allow dozens more foreigners to come here and get on welfare? Hogwash! Your arguments are all pure misplaced emotion and and lack any sort of logic. Are you sure you are on the right forum?
