Fred Thompson: Romneycare At A Glance
Upper Cumberland Daily News ^ | 120607

Posted on 01/06/2008 2:30:43 PM PST by Fred

Fred Thompson Release:

- This is Romney's health care plan of which he claims authorship and credit. - The plan guarantees Planned Parenthood a seat at the decision-making table. - The plan provides taxpayer-funded abortions for a copay of $50. - The plan penalizes individuals not buying health insurance coverage and small businesses not offering health insurance to their employees.

Romney Is Quick To Take Credit For Massachusetts' Health Care Plan

- "I love it. It's a fabulous program." (GOP Primary Debate, Reagan Library, Simi Valley, CA, MSNBC, 5/3/2007) - "But I helped write it and I knew it well..." (GOP Primary Debate, Reagan Library, Simi Valley, CA, MSNBC, 5/3/2007)

KEY ASPECTS OF ROMNEY'S MASSACHUSETTS HEALTH CARE PLAN...

(1) Guarantees Planned Parenthood A Seat At The Table. Romney's legislation created an advisory board and guarantees, by law, that Planned Parenthood has a seat at the table. Romney's plan established a MassHealth payment policy advisory board, and one member of the Board must be from Planned Parenthood. No pro-life organization is represented. (Chapter 58 Section 3 (q) Section 16M (a), http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/seslaw06/sl060058.htm )

(2) Provides Taxpayer-Funded Abortions . Abortions are covered in the Commonwealth Care program that Romney created as Governor. Under the program, abortions are available for a copay of $50. (Menu of Health Care Services: http://www.mass.gov/Qhic/docs/cc_benefits1220_pt234.pdf )

- Romney used his line-item veto authority to strike eight sections of the bill that he found objectionable, including the expansion of dental benefits to Medicaid recipients. Yet, he did not strike Planned Parenthood's guaranteed Board representation and he did nothing to prohibit taxpayer-funded abortions as part of his plan. ("Romney's Health Care Vetoes," Associated Press, 4/12/06)

(3) Punitive Toward Small Businesses. Small Businesses are fined $295-per-employee if they do not provide health insurance coverage to employees. (Steve LeBlanc, "Mass Lawmakers Ok Mandatory Health Bill," Associated Press, 4/5/06)

(4) Punitive Toward Individuals. Individuals not obtaining health insurance coverage lose their personal state tax exemption in 2007, which will cost them an estimated $219 in higher taxes. In 2008, uncovered individuals are assessed a fine equal to 50-percent of the cost of a standard insurance policy, which could be as much as $2,000. (Michael Tanner, "No Miracle In Massachusetts," Cato Institute, 6/6/06; Steve LeBlanc, "Timing Of Health Care Law's Penalties Could Pose Risk For Romney, MA," Associated Press, 11/9/07; William C. Symonds, "In Massachusetts, Health Care for All?" Business Week, 4/4/06 )

Unfortunately it may be too late by the time the hospital treats you. I didn’t get timely care and ended up in hospital two months with an expensive chronic condition that will never go away. Oh, and I have a minimum wage job; how much was I supposed to have in a savinghs account?

Getting the government OUT of healthcare would be the single best thing you could do to provide affordable healthcare to all.

Given the government’s track record, having the government do absolutely nothing else regarding healthcare is probably the most for which we can hope.

There is one field of medicine that has greatly expanded access, increased treatment options, and reduced costs. That is the field of Plastic Surgery and it is no accident that it is almost entirely paid for by the individuals who seek treatment. The government hasn’t had an opportunity to screw it up.

My point is that ultimately the blame rested with the Governor. If Fred had been and done squat, then you’d have reason to saddle him with it. It is state officials that deal with state policy, not federal (even if there was ultimately some overlap here). He wasn’t about to start a civil war with Scumquist.

The dam@ stinking program would have never existed without federal money and federal approval from which was obtained on the support of the state U.S. Senators. That is how it worked. Remember? Fred did nothing to address it. He did everything to encourage Taxquist. But I got a feeling if Taxquist was running instead of Fred I'd be hearing major defense of him as well.

"He could have vetoed it."

In all fairness, Mitt's veto was proven useless here.

Should he have vetoed on principle? Perhaps.

It would not have made a difference.

I am against the health care mandate altogether, so the point is moot.

Until people are made to take ownership of their own medical care, we'll never be free of the specter of socialized medicine. Individually-owned health savings accounts with individually-owned high-deductible insurance for catastrophic expenses are the only way.

The President had it right when he talked about an "ownership society." If only he'd followed through more vigorously.

The $50 abortions were thrown in by a judge. Romney had nothing to do with it.

As much as possible. Saving a decent amount each month should take priority over cable television, high speed internets, cell phone plans, other luxuries.

I was willing to cut Romney a lot of slack when he was here, but I disagree with the above. Yes, he should have vetoed on principle. However, his plans for a future run for the presidency precluded that.

Of course he should. What he DID was go along with a bloodthirsty court order, like a Good German.

What’s really sad is one said “for the children” sheesh. My wife is a C-5 quad and went way over six months without a doctor while Taxquist and our U.S. Senators fiddled. No doctor would take her because to take her as a Tenncare and Medicare patient it meant almost no payment nor could they bill us the difference. This was under Republicans not DEMs but the DEMs started it and the GOP decided it was time for them to get their cut of the Big HMO donor dollars too.

I want Fred as the GOP nominee, Hunter as his running mate. However, I will vote for any GOP nominee (Except Ron Paul) over any Democratic nominee, but Mitt is not what I consider a good candidate for the long run. He has too many liberal traits for the hardcore Conservatives and Religious Right, but if he heads the GOP ticket, he has my vote.

Last time I checked, when TennCare was enacted in the first place, it was done under McWherter (a rodent), with Sasser and Gore/Mathews (more rodents) in federal office. You need to blame Scumquist for not doing the program to YOUR liking. Fred alone could not have just done what you’re suggesting and have expected to have gotten ANYTHING accomplished other than mass-scale public attacks and a swift defeat.

As for my excusing Scumquist if HE were running for President (whom was just as horrible a RINO Governor as Huckster and Joe Isuzu Romney), you are sadly mistaken. I was proud to have voted for his opponent in the 1998 election (both primary AND general). I wouldn’t have voted for him for dogcatcher.

50 years ago before government got involved, most people were uninsured and health care costs were more reasonable. The reason California has such a problem with their medical health care system, is because the liberals have pushed for more and more government intervention into health care services. Btw, private health care insurance has always had the cost for the uninsured factored into its rate structure and built into its premium charges.

Get government out of the health care business and allow the free market to follow its course. There is no constitutional right to free or subsidized health care. If there was such a right, we wouldn’t be a Republic. We’d be a socialist state.

in how his campaign put out those false stories that Fred was going to drop out after Iowa?Nice try. You may have the fingerprints, but without DNA and eye witness testimony from six Romneyites, it doesn't count. We know who Mutt is; and we know WHAT Mutt is: A mangy cur, masquerading as a champion show dog.
