Fred Thompson today blasted the media for propagating a false rumor about his impending withdrawal, while bolstering the role he has created for himself as the candidate in this race who does not suffer unwelcome questions gladly.
Back in Iowa, Thompson famously refused to respond to the debate moderator/school marm's demand for a hand-show on global warming. Then this morning on Today, he declined to engage in horse-race speculation about his own prospects, then took the media to task for its propagation of that false rumor about his impending withdrawal. Weekend anchor Lester Holt interviewed the former Tennessee senator.

We are a house divided in the GOP in many ways. Many have forgotten what got us here.
It took a Carter to bring us a Reagan, I hope such a lesson does not remain lost for long.

FWIT, Thursday I am pretty sure,I saw on FNC a group talking about the story and that Fred had denied it. That young Hoover girl said it was all over everywhere that Fred’s staff was talking about that, and she thought it was true, the others said it was crap and crap to talk like that on the day of the caucus. I though she was wrong to say that even if it were true.
13 days until our primary and then I can vote Fred, hopefully for the first time out of two in this election cycle.
Exactly who watches the msm anymore?A bunch of libs thats who.Like they were going to vote for FDT anyway. We have the internet now and more and more people use it so Im of the mind that the msm doesnt carry the weight it once did.
It is irresponsible.
He says it cost him points in Iowa. He is probably right.
So, when they asked him "who started the rumor," he was justified to say that I don't owe you that answer.
Do you see someone on the horizon?
The perception of the MSM is that Thompson would be the toughest Republican to beat, so the rumor and smear campaign is already in high gear. Although the MSM comes short of admitting it’s the PR wing of the Democrat Party, the hate and bias this campaign will not be veiled or in the least subtle-it wants a Democrat in the White House at any cost.
Lester Holt brought Fred on there to spice up some trouble with the Romney campaign. Fred wasn’t playing those games and Holt ended the interview when he saw he wasn’t going to get the juicy nugget he was looking for.
The media is an absolute disgrace.
Millions and millions of voters, informed or otherwise. I support Fred, that think this tactic is about all he can do; say what he thinks and live with the consequences. That's been his style all along, and is one of the reasons I support him over the candidates whose media presence is polished to a high gloss.
Does Fred know who started the rumor? I would love to know who did it.
So what's the media going to do to him?
Attempt to ignore him and his campaign?
Make smarmy attacks on his work ethic and his desire to win when they do condescend to speak of him?
Spread fraudulent rumors designed to inhibit his vote?
They are already actively working to take him out of this race. I agree that he has to do what he has to do.
Well I don’t know if the MSM is as stupid as everybody says. Yesterday the blonde tart from CNN who is imbedded with the Thompson campaign said that Fred is about to make his last stand. She said that Fred’s staff likened it to Custer’s Last Stand which she wasn’t sure was such a good idea because of what happened to Custer. She THEN went on to explain that General Custer and his troops were slaughtered in a one way battle during the civil war. Uh....
Back to the last stand nonsense. Who said Fred was taking Custer’s side?
He's said he he thinks he knows but hasn't said anymore. Combine that with Mary Matalin accusing John McCain of dirty tricks the next day and I think I know who it was.
The candidate in this race who does not suffer fools gladly is more like it.
I had originally phrased it just that way. However, whereas the Iowa moderator’s demand for a show of hands was foolish, there was nothing inherently unreasonable about Lester Holt asking Fred which candidate had planted the withdrawal rumor. That was an obvious question for a journalist to ask, even though Fred was certainly within his rights to refuse to answer it.
It's an old trick used by msm fools who know that the question will resonate more than the answer. Tiresome, and I for one am glad that someone has the stones to stand up to the unelected Fourth Estate.
Good post, btw!
Glad to see some stories from you guys on what the media is doing to Fred. I’m guessing he’s not your favorite horse in the race, but I was surprised when I didn’t see anything from you on what Fox News was doing to him on caucus night.
Fred was on there to talk about issues, not old rumors. It was not reasonable at all to dredge up a bunch of trouble.
Props to Wolf Blitzer at CNN. He just gave Fred a very fair shake, stuck to the issues and Fred came off brilliantly. More interviews like that and he’ll start making bigger inroads.
If this is a true statement, and it may prove to be... then it says a lot more about the GOP constituency than it does Fred Thompson as a serious candidate.
Which would you rather have? Just think about that a moment....
... and then tell me how you can not seem to get behind the only adult in the race and the only remaining viable candidate who stands on principal?
