Eight years ago, Fred Thompson came for an editorial board visit after we had already endorsed George Bush, to tell us how wrong we were. We should have backed John McCain, he told us. I knew that, of course, but I sat still for his gruff advice as a sort of penance for my failure. I had tried hard (more about that in my Sunday column), but the consensus on our board had gone against me.
As futile as his gesture was at that point, I still appreciated Sen. Thompson's position, as bad as it made me feel. McCain had been the man, and it was the nation's loss that he was not elected in 2000.
Since he knew that then, and Sen. McCain is the same man he was, I've wondered all year why in the world Mr. Thompson even thought of running. As I said back in this column, he forgot to do one thing when he jumped in late: Tell us what it was he brought to the campaign that the candidates already running did not already offer.
Now, it's my turn to return the favor and tell Fred Thompson something that he should already know: It's time for him to do the principled thing again, and assert what he knew to be true back then: He should bow out, and support McCain. And he should do it now; now is when he can make a difference.
Sen. McCain is tied for first place in New Hampshire polls with a damaged Mitt Romney; Mr. Thompson is in single digits. By the time he comes South, all he will be able to do is be a spoiler, to pull just enough voters away from another candidate (and I suspect that candidate would most likely be his longtime ally McCain) to throw the victory to the surging Huckabee.
Nothing against Huckabee on my part; I just don't see him as the alternative Mr. Thompson himself would prefer. Meanwhile, he has continued to express his continuing respect for Sen. McCain; this would be a chance to show he means it.
Speaking of Gov. Huckabee, his victory is his own. But he was not in a position to begin that rise, he was not in striking distance, until Sam Brownback gracefully departed from the race. They had both been drinking from the same well of voters, and Sen. Brownback clarified matters for them.
Quitting when he did was Sen. Brownback's greatest contribution to this campaign, and was the best thing he could have done to serve the values and ideas he espouses. If Sen. Thompson wants to advance his own values, if he wants to make a difference and serve the country -- or if he simply wants the gratification of being a player at all -- he should get behind McCain now.

For objectivity’s sake I am a big Thompson fan. He is my guy.
That being said, it is my perception that he did the most for his campaign out of all the candidates.
There is one thing I wish he would do though, on the Immigration issue, he should be emphasizing every time this issue comes up in the clearest and simplest terms possible that his plan’s emphasis is on self-deportation. Make it impossible for illegal aliens to work and they will self deport.
Ditto. I could even stomach McCain as a VP pick for Thompson, although I would much prefer Hunter in that slot, but these people ae dreaming if they think McCain has any chance of getting Fred’s supporters that easy.

The litmus test for the lying wannabe dictators is "intensity" - they raise their voices, they get 'passionate', they point their fingers...like all despots do, to cover up their lies. (think Castro, Chevez, Hitler, Stalin, Krushchev, T. Kennedy, Reid, Hitlery, ... )
The leaders that are honest, trustworthy adults have no need for raised voices and pointing fingers - (think Reagan, Churchill, Blair, Petreaus, Bush)
Maybe you are backing a different horse. that would explain your pushing the new stealth-mantra about Fred dropping out.
Make that one more that Mr. Yesterday, McCain, should drop out and endorse Thompson. Have heard more about Fred lately than previously. He responds with facts when directly asked a question.
The debate this evening was very revealing, as each one actually showed their true colors.
McCain should drop out(he won’t), Huckabee should drop out(he won’t), same applies to Ron Paul.

Once upon a time, here in the great state of South Carolina, them would’ve been fighting words and Mr. Warthen’s presence would’ve been requested on the State House lawn, and told to bring his six-shooter, to a waiting Fred Thompson.
I agree.
The pundits say 12 million cannot be deported.
I know that number is grossly underestimated.
They managed to get here, they can manage to get back.
Do it by themselves, or get get some state or federal help.
It can be done.
Only then, should they apply for legal immigration, behind those who have already applied and are waiting who have not broken the the law by slipping in here.
It seems simple to me.
Several candidates have or have raised the money to run well into February. Other candidates may gain that money by doing well in the early states. All of those candidates have the right to keep running, and more importantly, the voters in the states that vote later have the right to look at the remaining candidates and vote for their choices. No one should drop out of the race at this point based on the results of a few early primaries.

This is the ONLY solution to the whole mess I've yet heard that is doable - they will 'self-deport' and others wont bother to head this way. Sanest and simplest Solution: "SSS"

You missed the whole point of my response to khnyny. I was acknowledging his theory. And btw, he said he was a Fred supporter. I thought it had merit and am curious as to if it will turn out to be true. As he was a Fred supporter, I used the lack of intensity comment to be more kind. I wasn’t trying to start an arguement, at least, not then. I could have used the oft-used phrases like lazy, lacking fire in the belly, etc. That was just a throw away line to buttress his theory.
And yes, I do support someone else, per my tagline. I do not care for Fred at all and will be ticked off if it turns out that this IS the reason he entered the race, to aid McCain. yuck
Way too early to give up. It bugs me how the rino’s want the conservatives to give up. There is no way I want a rino to win.
