Published reports that Fred Thompson soon will withdraw from the Republican presidential contest and endorse Sen. John McCain have been traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign, trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson.
There is no question, however, that McCain strategists would welcome Thompson's endorsement if and when he drops out. It could help McCain in the Jan. 19 South Carolina primary.

whoa...
With no proof, this is terrible to say! Actually I would expect if more from McCain himself than Romney since I have heard that McCain can be a backstabber at times. Again, with no proof I would say Politico(?) did it on their own.
Isn't it interesting that most of the lies, smears, false claims, etc were started by Romney and his supporters?!
It tells you something about the character of the man and those he surrounds himself with.

Do I gotta say it ?
He is lucky becuase the other 3rd place finisher(by the skin of his teeth) hillary has been getting hammered
Charles, why does everything need such long explanations with you? You’re a pretty articulate guy, but either you’re in the habit of pretending to be dense or you actually are in spite of the appearances to the contrary.
Apparently, Fred’s been running a smaller and more frugal operation than most of the others. He’s got a good bit of cash on hand, but is trying to keep as much in reserve as possible for when it’s needed (which I assume is coming up in the SC, FL primaries) and is trying his best to replenish everything that is spent with new money.
Politicians are always asking for money. That’s what they’re doing every time they hold a fundraiser. Are we to assume that every time a candidate holds a traditional fundraiser, he’s out of money? Fred’s raising money from the grassroots and doing so quite well, I might add.
If he’s all out of money and all but dead in the water, they sure are wasting a whole lot of ink trying to convince everyone about it.
That's who I think did it. Martin himself.
I think this rumor was created by the media and now they are trying to place the blame elsewhere.
If AND when?
Oh ye of little faith.
The Prince of Darkness has it bass-ackwards, again.
This sure has the stench of Team Romney.
That bunch is so desperate, they will try anything.
I will never ever in my life cast a vote for that bastard Romney.
He and his sleazy campaign can go to hell.
Wow! I haven't seen a conservative twist logic around like this in a long time. Since the "politico" was telling a lie to begin with, what makes you think they're claimed source as "people close to Thompson's campaign" isn't part of the lie itself?
I'd assume they go together, the rumor about Thompson as well as the claimed source are OBVIOUSLY part and parcel of the same lie and you don't get to use half the lie to make a determination about the other half. That's just pretzel logic
people close to Thompsons campaign.
Since they can spin tales heres mine:
The people close to the Thompson campaign wasn’t really a lie. They were Romney supporters that were standing next to several Thompson sign holding supporters.
It makes more sense that McCain was behind it. Romney would WANT Thompson to beat McCain in Iowa to weaken him in NH.
Unless you personally destroyed some kind of evidence, how can you be sure it does not exist?
That seems like a very strange claim to make.
Why am I not surprised by the headline.
LOL. Is that photoshopped?
Pass the pings along please.
