Fred Thompson may drop out (For any latecomers, it's baloney)
The Politico ^ | January 02, 2008 | Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen

DES MOINES, Iowa – Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursday’s Iowa caucus.

“Sure, Fred will probably endorse McCain. But Tancredo probably endorsed Fred or Hunter also.”

If Fred Thompson does very poorly in Iowa (which he won’t) and drops out of the race (which won’t happen, despite wishful thinking from the Romney campaign), I don’t think he will endorse Mitt Romney. Unless, of course, Mitt not only offers to pay off all of Thompson’s campaign debt (as Mitt did in order to “convince” Tancredo to endorse him-—I guess Mitt forgot to pay off Tancredo’s campaign team, which refused to endorse Mitt), but also name Thompson as his runningmate and convince Thompson that he would indeed govern as a conservative and not as the mushy Massachusetts liberal that he was as governor from 2003-2007.

These are YOUR words, not mine:

“I don’t think Fred will drop out before New Hampshire. The only wild card is if Fred really thinks his endorsement would help his old friend McCain win the election, and my guess is with McCain looking good in NH now Fred would wait and use his endorsement to give McCain an extra boost right before the South Carolina primary.”

In case you said something you didn’t really mean, I need to point out to you that what you are saying here is that while you don’t think Fred will drop out before New Hampshire, you “guess” Fred would wait until just ahead of the South Carolina primary.

YOUR WORDS, not mine.

Romney Thompson ticket? (music to my ears)

If he drops out it will be to assist another candidate. This is politics.

Fred wouldn’t do that, and if he did, it would destroy his reputation and character completely, as it did to Judas Tancredo.

See, this is why it is important to read the entire posts, and not just quote from parts of them.

That was my speculation as to what Fred would do IF he dropped out, and then to make sure nobody made the mistake you made, I clearly stated that it was predicated on the assumption Fred would drop out, which I was not ascribing to.

In other words, I was both disagreeing with the idea that Fred would drop out, and also arguing that if he WAS going to drop out, he wouldn’t do it now.

In normal times, I wouldn’t have had to include the disclaimer, but people around here are extremely touchy about anything said about Fred Thompson, like if someone sneezes wrong he might break or something.

Unfortunately, it appears that even with a clear statement that I was not saying he would drop out at all, at least one person didn’t understand that statement and was certain I was predicting he would drop out.

I think you should stop looking for bad news and bad predictions about your candidate.

Hey, I thought Politico was fairly balanced. After this, I will never post them again.

***I’ve noticed the same thing. And lots of freepers seem to have trouble with simple hypotheticals, like “if I gave you a million bucks, would you be a millionaire?” The answer is invariably some kind of effort to deny the actual hypothesis, the smarter ones say that hypotheticals are a waste of time, but if you look through their posting history you’ll find all kinds of hypothetical constructs.

But wait a minute!... Did not I hear just about one hour age that FT himself had assured everyone this was a rumor? Can anyone tell me, did he say anything to dispel the rumors or not?

Jesus, whom do we believe on anything anymore?... It's all rumors and innuendo. I just want to know to what extend is the truth becoming a casualty...

Fred was absolutely clear - that he never said anything like this in public or private.

He said it was likely put out by another campaign.

Not to mention the new nation polls today show him tied with Guiliani, just 5 points behind Romney.

Fred will not win...

Reagan did not win in Iowa either but came in with 51% in a 6 way battle in New Hampshire..and kept building from there

Iowa is a stepping stone...a flinty little stone that has been built up by the media...just that and nothing more.

Thompson will be our nominee and he will end the hildebeast’s mania for power.

Thank you.

Boy, there is something about VIDEO!... that it can not be refuted in any way (for now anyway, until they start faking them :)

Well, that is good enough for me. I took it as he will stay in at least for IOWA and NH, but that time he should have an idea of his options.

I have always said that the Internet would change the 'game of politics' tremendously, and I belive it!... But these polls... so inconsistent... That is even more change that I ever expected :) crazy.
