Should Women Submit? Huckabee Says Yes Candidate: Take Nation 'Back For Christ'

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Mike Huckabee, a Republican relying on support from religious conservatives in Thursday's hard-fought presidential caucuses, on Sunday stood by a decade-old comment in which he said, "I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ."

n a television interview, the ordained Southern Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor made no apologies for the 1998 comment made at a Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Salt Lake City.

"It was a speech made to a Christian gathering, and, and certainly that would be appropriate to be said to a gathering of Southern Baptists," Huckabee said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

He gave the speech the same year he endorsed the Baptist convention's statement of beliefs on marriage that "a wife is to submit graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ." Huckabee and his wife, Janet, signed a full-page ad in USA Today in support of the statement with 129 other evangelical leaders.

The former governor, who rallied Christian evangelicals to make him a surprise force in Iowa, has put his faith front and center in his campaign. His stump speech sounds like a pastor's pitch from a pulpit. Campaign ads emphasize faith and call him a Christian leader. He frequently quotes Bible verses.

As his fortunes have improved, Huckabee has faced a drumbeat of questions and criticism about his gubernatorial record and the role of faith in his administration. He also has made some missteps while trying to fend off a challenge -- and critical TV ads -- from Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and Mormon whose faith unsettles some religious conservatives.

Four days before the caucuses Thursday, a new poll found Huckabee's surge may have stalled; his once double-digit lead over Romney has evaporated. Private polling shows the two in a dead heat.

The television interview was Huckabee's only campaign appearance Sunday.

With the media throng following him having grown immensely, Huckabee scrapped a public event at a church in favor of attending a private service closed to reporters. Instead of courting voters, he hunkered down to film new TV ads, perhaps spots responding to Romney's barrage of critical commercials.

As recently as Friday, Huckabee insisted he wanted to run a positive campaign. He also reserved the right to respond aggressively.

Those skeptical of the role of faith in his presidency, he said, should look at his record in Arkansas.

"I didn't ever propose a bill that we would remove the Capitol dome of Arkansas and replace it with a steeple," he said. "You know, we didn't do tent revivals on the grounds of the Capitol."

Without the Christian vote, the GOP is toast.

Hang together or hang separately.

Romney has been pushing the word Mormon and the image of victim constantly throughout the campaign, yet he really has not suffered many actual attacks by the media.

When Huckabee came on the scene recently, the media showed it’s comfort in attacking Christians by instantly doing just that, they were and are attacking not just Huckabee’s campaign methods, but Christianity itself, this article is one those, it attacks a fundamental tenet of Christianity on an issue that America’s largest non Catholic religion has been taking a beating for from the media.

The media is using Huckabee to attack the Baptist faith and Christianity itself in this case.

The Bible says what it says. Many women may not like the part about “submitting,” but it’s clear (from a biblical standpoint) that men are supposed to act as family leaders. Yet, there is more to it than simply “submission” on the part of women. As you quoted, men are supposed to love their wives as Christ loved (loves) the church. Christ gave his life in unconditional love for the church. That is a very tough standard for any man to live up to, but that’s what we are supposed to do.

In a proper, biblical Christian marriage, the man and woman work together in service to Christ and to each other. The man doesn’t rule over his wife. He works with her and God to reach the best decisions possible because he is ultimately responsible, as the leader of the family, for the decisions he makes. A properly functioning marriage isn’t a power struggle, it’s an efficient team that draws on the strengths of each spouse to be better together than they could ever be apart.

I don’t really have a problem with Huckabee’s statements on this particular topic. He appears to be accurately following scripture. However, I think this article proves a preacher should stick to preaching and not try to be a politician.

He is simply quoting scripture in the proper context, and I don’t quite understand this blatant chest thumping going on here at FR.

Its the only religion where that passage is emphasized.

LOL....oh yeah....so I guess many liberal Catholics and liberal Jews have chosen to ignore the parts of the Bible they don't like in the year 2008 that those parts don't count?

Are all Conservative protestants the same to you?

Anglican Order, PCA, SBC, Missionary Baptists, Southern Methodist, Pentecost, Assemblies of God, Lutheran Missouri Synod...........and guess what?......Orthodox and some Conservative Jews believe in the submission of the wife to her husband bigtime....as do I imagine some Catholics

I don't like Huckster but he is right about this if one believes.

Even though, my husband is no longer living, I still submit to his leadership. I stay out of a lot of trouble when I do the things that he insisted that would make my life easier. Just simple things, like keeping the gas tank full, don’t drive on lonely roads at night, lock the car doors, etc. This is what the Bible means by wifely submission. Protection.

Not really. You should attend Church more. No god-fearing, true-to-the-word Church turns away from this or any other part of the scripture simply because Nan Aaron and Gloria Steinem don't agree with it.

“You use the big lie again. Huckabee’s religion (Christianity) is not the target, “

Read the article, it is about his faith, he didn’t bring up Christian teachings in this case, he is only refusing to renounce them at the media’s prodding.

(Mike Huckabee) on Sunday stood by a decade-old comment in which he said, “I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ.”

The only thing Huck's big showing in Iowa shows is that Iowa Republicans are suckers for a smooth talkng Bible thumper that can glibly mix religion and politics, inspite of their self-promotng reputation as serious political students.

Pat Robertson got 25% in 1988. The Brigadiers came out in force for Buchanan in '96 with 23%.

What does it matter that the Huckster says he is a good Christian and pro-life when Huckabee will turn the U.S,. into a socialist state where we will all be starving?

I don't believe the Huckster even believes in God since he lies so much and twists the bible so much to justify his Marxist ideology. This guy is a Marxist and like practically all Marxists he is an atheist.

Huckabee is a pro-illegal, pro-Amnesty, tax raising, big government loving, socialist/liberal, violent criminal pardoning, terrorist appeasing, false prophet. In other words Huckabee is really a Democrat.

Under no circumstances will I ever vote for this liberal/communist con man.

The Huckster Huckabee or Hillary will let in hundreds of millions of 3rd world socialist illegals.

The Huckster or Hillary will surrender to Iran and let Iran build a nuclear arsenal.

The Huckster or Hillary will raise taxes and increase the size of government putting the U.S. on the road to socialism which will destroy our way of life, destroy our economy, destroy our civilization.

If you think I'm exaggerating look at Huckabee's record and into the dangers of socialism.

But hey , the idiot Huckster lies and says he is pro-life so that makes all of this ok huh?

Thank you for stating it so well. We would also have fewer divorces and broken families if husbands truly loved their wives and wives truly submitted to their husbands.

BTW, for those who scoff, submitting as stated in the bible is not a bad thing. God doesn’t give us bad advice (commands). Humans have a way of distorting things for their own selfishness.

Agreed. The amount of religion infiltrating this whole election cycle is the Devil’s Work through the MSM. They FEAR anyone that’s God-fearing.

I have NO problem with our politicians having Faith, in fact, I prefer it. But I agree; do your thing in Church and not in the Statehouse. It works out better for us all if we stick with what our Founding Fathers set up for us in the first place; keeping the two separate for a reason. ;)
