A question for Romney and Huckabee supporters
Vanity | 12/30/2007 | Hank Kimball

Posted on 12/30/2007 5:50:44 PM PST by County Agent Hank Kimball

I have a very simple question, and I'd really like your take on it. I don't mean this as antagonistic, but I'd really like to hear your answer.

Somewhere between 70 and 80 percent of the people here on Free Republic consistently express their clear preference in poll after poll for Fred Thompson or Duncan Hunter over Huckabee or Romney.

My question is: Why?

Why do you think, despite Romneys many millions spent and the claims of both Romney and Huckabee to be genuine conservatives, that Freepers haven't bought it? It is quite clear that most here are firm in their belief that neither Romney or Huckabee is an acceptable conservative. At least at this point of the game.

Why do we think this - in your opinion?

And then, why are we wrong?

Hank

Some people want Huckabee to be the President because he was a preacher and has no apparent personal life baggage.

No baggage except a bunch of ethics questions, albeit raised by Democrats. The one that gets me is that when he was Lt. Governor the salary for that position was something in the mid $20K range. His "supporters" raised a fund to pay for his "living expenses" so that he could "work for the people" full time.

There is no way that you can look at a fund like that and have it pass the smell test, but Huckabee will tell you it was no big deal with a smile on his face.

Ideology is important to many of us but some of us put considerable weight into competence and achievement.

This is what I am struggling with as I try and decide who to vote for on Caucus night. Thompson is my pick if I look at just ideology but I believe Romney would be the better chief executive.

If you want someone who can win, then why aren’t you behind McCain instead?
He’s the one who can beat Hillary or any other Democrat, not Muckabee or Romney or Giuliani for that matter.

I don’t get the following here for Fred either - he has more votes for illegal immigration than Huckabee.

Explanation please!

PSSS - I don’t get the following here for Fred either - he has more votes for illegal immigration than Huckabee.

Huckabee was not in Congress, so he has no votes on anything. Hucks stance on amnesty and taxpayer's subsidizing illegals was far worse than any of Thompson's vote.

Mitt lost me when he said that his five sons were serving their country by helping him to get elected POTUS. How insensitive and condescending is that?!

The Huckster is just plain scary phony and fraud. The list in practically endless, so let’s just call it, “DEAR WAYNE”.

Huck is a nice guy but he’s just a pro-life, pro-gun liberal.

Romney is just a standard NE liberal and I wouldn’t pi$$ in his ear if his head was on fire!

Spoken like a true Arnold Republican. He could win. Look at California under his governorship since then.

"That was a statement....not a question."

Huh? I'm asking why Romney/Huckabee supporters think 70 to 80 percent of FR supports Hunter or Thompson.

That isn't a question?

Mojo is not a good enough answer for the President of the US who will be leading us in one of the most tumultuous times of our nation.

We need a true believer not a "huckster" that changes views with the wind and has a track record of all the wrong moves from immigration to pardons.

It's bad enough that the electorate does not have clue but for people on here with the huge info stream on this site for all freepers not to get it is hard to believe!

How many threads exposing these two guys does it take?

The antiMitt group seems particularly visceral and just plain ugly. I have had nasty stuff said to me including that I should go back to porn sites by your buddies. If Mitt irritates the heck out of such rude, nasty people it is okay with me. There is no real dirt on Mitt. He is a politician. I’ve never seen that he has been arrested, or broke a law, or misused a cigar. He seems to be working really hard to win and I hope that he does.

I understand why you're asking. But, to me, the more pressing question why aren't Thompson or Hunter gaining traction with Republican party voters? That's what really matters.

my concern is electability.

just my opinion, but,

lots of negatives for Reverend Mike and
Bishop Willard, for the general election.

concerning religion,
an ordinary ‘rank and file’ believer, is ok with me,
I just don’t want Reverend President

"I want someone who can win - Huckabee has been maligned by alot of people here. I don’t agree with him 100% on all issues, but he has the Mojo."

Sigh.

What I asked was: Why do you think 70 to 80% of FR supports Fred or Hunter? You must have some theory?

Hank

Pray tell me how Romney or Huckabee are any more competent than Fred Thompson. I think that maybe you have not totally looked at Fred’s competence in all of the things he has accomplished during his life.

So far as achievement, if what they have achieved is not in the conservative movement interest (which a lot of it is not by Romney and Huckabee) then it is a step backwards for conservatives!

I don’t qualify to respond as I don’t “support” either of them, but will add to the conversation only this: Huckabee doesn’t work for me/us due the old adage about “actions speak louder than words”. The man is a “RINO”, which is a “Mod”, which is the same as a “Liberal”, and those sorts have their own party to play in called the Democrat Party.

So, if that’s not enough to stop Mr. Huckabee, then I haven’t much hope for this Nation anymore.

You have every right to feel as you do. If he gets the nomination I’ll vote for him, but he seems to believe what is in vogue at the moment.

My Preference of top tier candidates

1. Rudy Guliani....Will be tough on Hillary He’s no conservative...But he is no Bob Dole

2. Thompson....Most conservative ...Will be tough on Hillary ...not perfect....Needs to wake up the masses...

3.Romney....Slick, But I will support him, Hope he will put brakes on socialism...more conservative than Rudy but not by much...can’t handle the Clinton machine

4. McCain....King of the panderers....Remember Bob Jones /Flag flap South Carolina 2000; I do....Candidate of last resort

5 Huckabee...Bill Clinton artist...Heard him on Ingrham....Makes President Obama sound reasonable...

I’m a conservative not republican...Mark Levin for President...There are no elected conservative thinkers in Washington D.C......Defendingliberty
