Rome, 11 Dec. (AKI) - After decades of restorations, a series of well preserved frescoed rooms dating to the year 30 BC in the Roman Emperor Augustus's house are set to go on display next year in the Italian capital.
The rooms are on Rome's Palatine hill, which is one of Rome's original seven hills and from which the word 'palace' is derived.
Legend has it that the twin brothers Romulus and Remus founded Rome on the Palatine and its where many Roman emperors had their palaces built.
Augustus's rooms were discovered in the late 1970s and were painted in vivid and well-preserved colours. One of the rooms that stands out is a "studiolo", which is where Augustus was thought to withdraw for privacy.
The rooms will be open to the public on 2 March 2008 along with the house of Livia, Augustus's wife, after decades of restoration which cost over 1.5 million euros.
The opening of the rooms follows the November discovery of the "Lupercal", which is believed to be the cave where Romulus and Remus were nursed by a she-wolf. The Lupercal is also located near the ruins of Augustus's house.
Emperor Augustus, born Gaius Octavius was the first Roman emperor, and his rule extended from 27 BC until 14 AD following the assassination of his great-uncle Julius Caesar.
Fascinating.
Thanks a lot for posting!
I wonder how long it will take the Muslims to become offended by this.
