Ted Jackson / Times-PicayuneSharon Jasper sits in the living room of her voucher-backed private residence. "I might be poor but I don't like to live poor. I thank God for a place to live but it's pitiful what people give you."
Sharon Jasper, a former St. Bernard complex resident presented by activists Tuesday as a victim of changing public housing policies, took a moment before the start of the City Hall protest to complain about her subsidized private apartment, which she called a "slum." A HANO voucher covers her rent on a unit in an old Faubourg St. John home, but she said she faced several hundred dollars in deposit charges and now faces a steep utility bill.
"I'm tired of the slum landlords, and I'm tired of the slum houses," she said.
Pointing across the street to an encampment of homeless people at Duncan Plaza, Jasper said, "I might do better out here with one of these tents."
Jasper, who later allowed a photographer to tour the subsidized apartment, also complained about missing window screens, a slow leak in a sink, a warped back door and a few other details of a residence that otherwise appeared to have been recently renovated.

My sister recently said that we had a "beautiful house".
I then started to recite "the list" which sounds a bit like yours.
:-)
Unless your house is very new you will always have "issues".
I guess this lady expects the landlord to jump through hoops to meet her every need. Most landlords don't do that--which is one reason to own instead of rent.
Then you can get angry at yourself when the repairs donn't get done in a timely manner.
:-)

This is the lifestyle I witnessed 30 years ago when I read electric meters in some of Cleveland's rougher neighborhoods. People, living on public assistance, posessing things that I could not afford with my union wages. When my mother worked at the church hunger center, people would routinely pull up in large new sedans - Caddys, Lincolns, Buicks - to get their free entitlement.
It's pretty hard to be sympathetic to the cause when you see hundreds of dollars stolen from your paycheck by the federal government each week to support this lifestyle. This is the perfect example of the results of socialism.
And no democRAT OR Republican dare speak out about it. In fact, both seem to support it. I recall the government giving out $1000 cash cards after Katrina, and that was under a Republican-controlled house, Senate, and Presidency.

"I'm tired of the slum landlords, and I'm tired of the slum houses," she said. You see, my dear, that's the incentive to work hard, study, learn a skill or trade, save money, invest, and steer clear of addictive substances and bad people. We like to call it "making a living". It's why being poor sucks, and not being poor is a generally considered to be a good thing.
So, what choices did you make in your life? They're probably different from mine. I'll always respect your right to make those decisions, of course, but I do not think that others will be paying for the consequences of your choices forever, hon. Just an FYI.

LBJ's "Great Society" did to the black community what all the Klan, and all the neo-Nazi's, and all the bigots of the world could not...it destroyed the black family. It make it so a man was not ashamed of being out of work, so that a woman was not ashamed of having babies out of marriage, and so a child was not ashamed to fail in school. Combined with the "sexual revolution" that made it acceptable for a man to father children and move on, a Rap tradition that saw no inconsistency in calling themselves "*i**ers" and their women "hoes", and a growing collection of oddball "spokespastors" that ignored the growing bankruptcy of values in the black culture only to blame it on "the Man", and you have the collapse of a culture.
When charity flowed voluntarily from the churches, you were expected at least to sit and listen to the Good News. When charity flows out of my wallet without my permission thorough government teats that require very little if anything of the end user, and into the mouths of an ungrateful populous, something is wrong.

If that's a slum house, then chain me to the wall.
When we moved from our KY river home to WV years ago, the buyer was a low-income subsidized family who got some kind of assistance to afford the home.
For a year after the sale, the buyer kept sending us bills for things like cleaning the air conditioner filter, painting, fixing little details, basic home maintenance, even mowing. She thought that somebody has to pay these bills, not her. I sent them back with the words on the sale contract, AS IS. It's your house now. There are lots of people in this world who have no sense of personal responsibility.

I’m tired of the slum landlords, and I’m tired of the slum houses,” she said.
I think we should move her into a real slum house and let her pay the rent herself. I think she should give ME her TV.
You know all in the spirit of the things people give you.

I don't know how the left still supports government charity when this is the result. Easy - this represents the base of the democRAT party - a freeloader that gains free, unearned subsistence for the price of voting democRAT. Repeatedly if necessary (and yes, repeatedly in the same election - such is the state of fraud in our large cities).
In essence, the Rats are buying the votes of people like this lady, with our tax dollars. It's quite a scam really.
