Ted Jackson / Times-PicayuneSharon Jasper sits in the living room of her voucher-backed private residence. "I might be poor but I don't like to live poor. I thank God for a place to live but it's pitiful what people give you."
Sharon Jasper, a former St. Bernard complex resident presented by activists Tuesday as a victim of changing public housing policies, took a moment before the start of the City Hall protest to complain about her subsidized private apartment, which she called a "slum." A HANO voucher covers her rent on a unit in an old Faubourg St. John home, but she said she faced several hundred dollars in deposit charges and now faces a steep utility bill.
"I'm tired of the slum landlords, and I'm tired of the slum houses," she said.
Pointing across the street to an encampment of homeless people at Duncan Plaza, Jasper said, "I might do better out here with one of these tents."
Jasper, who later allowed a photographer to tour the subsidized apartment, also complained about missing window screens, a slow leak in a sink, a warped back door and a few other details of a residence that otherwise appeared to have been recently renovated.

hey you don’t expect her to watch the Saints on anything less than a big screen HD TV do you?
To: TornadoAlley3
What’s that enormous grayish window thing to her right?
Oh yes, it’s a TV.

The gall of these people.
Is that a plasma TV I see her sitting next to? Between my wife and I we make over 75K a year and WE don't have one that nice.
This ungrateful b**** should be tossed out into the street.
"Pitiful what people give you..." just makes my blood boil.

I wonder if she’s complaining about the big screen tv too? What an ungrateful slob. It’s parasites like her that have turned the country against New Orleans.

If that’s the kind of TV poor people have, I wonder what the rich are using.

I might be poor but I don't like to live poor. Most people don't. That's why they go out and get a job.

Welcome to the wonderful world of home ownersh...uh, nevermind. LOL . . . exactly! If you talked about my residence (which I love and looks great) you would say that a toilet needs reseating, the closet doors need fixing, the roof in the laundry area is water damaged, sheetrocking needs to be done on a water damaged corner of the bathroom, glass blocks around the shower need to be taken out, the drapes have a tear, the washer isn't working, an exterminator needs to come in, the rugs need cleaning, the fire warning system is substandard, the entry to the attic is too risky for use, and the grout in the tile needs to be cleaned and sealed. Meanwhile you walk in and say "nice place" . . .

I AM DISGUSTED!
She has a HUGE TV, a ton of stuff, and is complaining. What a crock, also she looks fine to me, should be out WORKING.
I think that anyone that is looking for a hand out better REALLY be down and out. I could get rid of the welfare state in a half hour.
1. No more checks or housing if you smoke, drink booze, do drugs, or have a TV bigger than 30 inches, cable, or a game system, all of this is a LUXURY and you don't give people that can afford Luxury goods any hand outs.
2. Have them report to work for picking up trash along the side of the road for 4 hours a day, and have them search for WORK in the private sector for the other 4 hours of a work day. Or else NO CHECK.
3. If they are truly disabled, they should get that signed off by a BOARD of doctors, not just one Quack getting people on the public gravy train.
4. They can only be on public assistance for 6 months if they aren't disabled. Then it is burger flipping time, or toilet scrubbing. Used to be people had pride and decided NOT to accept hand outs unless they were really needed. They wanted the people that couldn't help themselves, get the money first.
5. No processed food to be purchased, that way people get HEALTHY food, no one can spend public money on Cheetos, Twinkies, Junk Food, fatty foods, or Fried Foods. They can buy Fruit, vegetables, and other raw foods, but not STEAK, Lobster, or luxury foods. Just regular raw food. That way we don't pay for their FAT BUTTS to get medical treatment for ailments due to bad diet.
I'd bet I could cut the budget by 80% in the first week.
