China's intelligence service gained access to a secret National Security Agency listening post in Hawaii through a Chinese-language translation service, according to U.S. intelligence officials.
The spy penetration was discovered several years ago as part of a major counterintelligence probe by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) that revealed an extensive program by China's spy service to steal codes and other electronic intelligence secrets, and to recruit military and civilian personnel with access to them.
According to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity, China's Ministry of State Security, the main civilian spy service, carried out the operations by setting up a Chinese translation service in Hawaii that represented itself as a U.S.-origin company.
The ruse led to classified contracts with the Navy and NSA to translate some of the hundreds of thousands of intercepted communications gathered by NSA's network of listening posts, aircraft and ships.
Naval intelligence officials familiar with the Chinese spy penetration said the access to both "raw" and analyzed intelligence at Kunia caused significant damage by giving China's government details on both the targets and the sources of U.S. spying operations. Such information would permit the Chinese to block the eavesdropping or to provide false and misleading "disinformation" to U.S. intelligence.
The officials did not say how long the Chinese operation lasted before being detected.
"There can be no higher target for an intelligence service, and that includes China's MSS and 2 PLA, than gaining access to an adversaries' codes and electronic intelligence," he said, because it is the ultimate in "foreknowledge" advocated by ancient Chinese strategist Sun Tzu.
The facility was singled out for criticism in the past by intelligence reform advocates because of its restrictive policies on information-sharing.

Why send personnel to DLI if we’re going to farm translation services out?
Is the USA the worst major power in history at spying and counter-spying? Every couple of years, we give away the store, but the CIA Station Chiefs do make their diversity quotas.
China ping
The Red Chinese force unsafe food and products on the American consumer, they hack into our computer systems at DoD, they have very cheap labor that big corporations take advantage of at the expense of the American worker, they tap into our spy operations, they’re engaging in a huge military build up to threaten us in the Pacific (like Japan in 1940-1941), and not a peep. Business as usual from the leadership. China is about as much our “friend” as Tojo was in the autumn of 1941.
disgusting
ping
Thanks for the China ping, I posted a large amount of my google searches on the World of Terrorism, some on this subject, there is a lot of it going on. Posted the googles this week.
One of the pop mags (either Science or Mechanics) had an article a few months ago about the patent and even trademark piracy that goes on unabated in China. But anyway, the parallel you draw is close to MHO. The folks used to say (about Japan) that they bought our scrap metal before the war, then shot it back at us.
U.S. carrier help? (Admiral offers help to China)
Adm. Tim Keating, the U.S. Pacific Command leader, told reporters during his visit to China last month that while building and operating a carrier battle group is complex, the United States is willing to help.
"We would, if they choose to develop [an aircraft-carrier program], help them to the degree that they seek and the degree that we're capable, in developing their programs," Adm. Keating said.

U.S. may share missile info with China
WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- The United States would "seriously" consider sharing technology and missile warning intelligence with China, (Secretary of Defense Gates) the U.S. defense chief said Sunday.

When will one of the Pub guys actually speak out on the problem and threat from China? That would speak volumes to the voters.
You just get the feeling like we are bending over in front of everyone on earth and saying, Yes we like takin it up the tailpipe?
Thanks for the links.
Never, will I understand why we help our enemies to have better weapons than we do.
It can only be due to the fact we have so many communists in our government, who think we should fall.
I am just a selfish old lady, I want my country to be stronger and better equipped than any other in the world.
I also want all of the items we need to be “made in the U.S.A.”
The only presidential candidate who comes out about the Communist China threat, and will actually do something about the threat, is Duncan Hunter!
Embarassed.
I.C. Smith, a former FBI special agent, said both China's civilian MSS and military spy service, known as "2 PLA" for the Second Department of the Chinese military, are targeting NSA.
A little inter-service rivalry helps turn over the stones of those hiding our failures.
"There can be no higher target for an intelligence service, and that includes China's MSS and 2 PLA, than gaining access to an adversaries' codes and electronic intelligence," he said, because it is the ultimate in "foreknowledge" advocated by ancient Chinese strategist Sun Tzu.
Precisely right. This boy gets it.
Getting U.S. electronic intelligence and codes would give China specific information on what is known and allow Beijing to take defensive measures "based on knowledge, not supposition," Mr. Smith said, adding that "it also allows for disinformation to be done with confidence and it basically gives the intelligence service every advantage over the enemy."
Correct...and frightening too. We always assumed that these agencies would not be as rotten as the others. But now, with the galling evidence so Damning to the NSA, and NCIS these services may now be as rotten and defective as the CIA.
Ping.
Correct.
But some characters don't seem to get it.
Must be blinded by their fantasies. Or their bulging wallets.
Maybe they can make some sense out of our intel, cause I sure can’t.
Or how about the entire EU blowing open and investigating our spying on banking transactions inside the EU. I guess we should cut off all relations with the EU, too?
You think our allies don't spy on us? You think we don't spy on our allies? In this case, we caught the Chinese, and didn't acknowledge it until well past we'd exploited the find. I can assure you of that...
Look, if you want to cut China out of being an "enemy" of the US, then change them. The best way to change societies is economically. It's been proven since the time of Rome - economic prosperity will create peace, and ease tensions.
DUncan Hunter is simply an isolationist who doesn't recognize history, and he's completely wrong on trade. Trade barriers weaken relations between countries, and increase tensions and escalate hostilities. Increase the economy, and the need to compete militarily goes away. 2500 years of history shows it to be so. Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it...
Trade is the single most effective means of growing our own economy and power (for ultimately military power derives soley from economic power), and for assuaging tensions and fears worldwide. People don't fight when they're fed and comfortable.
When other countries use subsidies to prop up their companies, it's the ultimate sign of surrender; like the EU propping up Airbus. In the short term, it does hurt Boeing a bit, but Boeing's used to the competition and is surviving quite well. In the long term, the inefficiency of Airbus will become such a drag on the EU they will either have to close it down completely, or wean Airbus off the subsidies which - much like pensions and benefits at GM - will be extremely traumatic and cause Airbus to fall further behind.
A country using tariffs to "skew" trade is saying that it can't compete - it's second rate. Take that as a compliment and compete harder. They can't keep it up. We broke the USSR economically - President Reagan recognized that. We are breaking the EU with the undervaluing of the dollar (yes, undervalued - it's being manipulated on purpose and is artificially surpressed) since they got uppity about trade. Ultimately the EU will collapse and leave us in an even stronger position... We can compete now, imagine when they fall apart.
Anyway, I await you to cry for elimination of trade relations with Israel and the EU, since they also are spying and counter-spying on our intelligence networks...
