Huckabee Iowa Manager: 'We're Fighting a Radical Religion in Islam' By Mark Finkelstein | December 19, 2007 - 18:57 ET

Mike Huckabee might want to "revise and extend" the remarks of his Iowa campaign manager. Appearing on this evening's Tucker on MSNBC, Bob Vander Plaats stated that "we're fighting a radical religion in Islam" and that "the war on terror is a theological war."

This might be the dumbest thing I ever heard. If “being a pastor and understanding the theological nature of the war” makes one well prepared, I think we should get the Pope to be Commander in Chief, or maybe at least someone who when he says he has a theology degree really does.

CNN Interactive
Pope John Paul II: Cold Warrior with a cross
'They trembled before the pope'

On June 2, 1979, just eight months after his consecration as pope, John Paul II returned to his native Poland for a nine-day visit that heralded the beginning of the end of the Soviet empire.

The pope said Mass that day in Victory Square in Warsaw, a place more often the scene of army parades and rallies orchestrated by the ruling communist government.

Officially, Poland was atheist, and the government had confined and thwarted the church at every turn, stopping just short of outright confrontation. But Poland had been a stronghold of Catholicism for more than a 1,000 years. It would take more than 35 years of communism to snuff out that faith. (snip)

I have no problem with Huckster's using a cross in an ad. But I have a big problem with his LYING about it, and denying that it was intentional.

If a former preacher will lie about the cross, what won't he lie about?

I just don't want good but naive folks to be Elmer Gantry'd into voting for a lying charlatan.

If a former preacher will lie about the cross, what won't he lie about?

Question:

Other than yourself, and other critics, has there been any assertion, from any who were involved with the creation of the Christmas message or even if they were standing in the room, that the “impresssion of a cross” was intended?

I have heard of none.

If so, please cite the source.

Again, leave out accusations, just provide first-hand evidence.

Vander Plaats' statement runs counter to the way that President Bush and virtually all other national figures have been very careful to say that we are not fighting a war against Islam

I have alot of differences with Huckabee.....but this needs to be said over and over.

Dubya, has been too politically correct in his public statements. The war is theological its cultural and until we admit it as a Nation and fight it that way we will not win it, we'll just be constantly fighting small regional wars.

It wasn’t a cross. Just a bookcase, but brilliantly played into millions of dollars of free press.

As someone else pointed out the coordinates are all wrong for a cross.

SSSSHHH. You can't say War on Terror a Theological War you'll 'roon' it.

The moment you suggest the war is against the Koranimals, the lefties get all indignant. You're not allowed to attack any religion unless it's Christianity.

Come on, do you REALLY believe it was just a cross-shaped bookcase that mysteriously moves from behind the tree and disappears behind his head, in perfect timing with his words?

To accomplish this shot, they had to use a sophisticated camera shot with a tracking dolly coordinated with panning. This keeps his face in the same place while the cross appears, moves toward his face, and disappears behind his head.

If you believe this was an “accident” and that they “didn’t notice it,” then you should stay inside and NEVER talk to strangers, because they are going to sell you a bridge.

Nothing in these ads is “by accident.” They discuss and “test” backgrounds, down to the tiniest detail such as the color of the three ornaments on the shelf/cross.

And if it was “just a shelf that they didn’t notice,” then why is it empty, except for the three carefully set ornaments? Where are the books, family photos and nicknacks? They just “happened” to have a cross/shelf in the background, and it was EMPTY?

If you truly believe this was not contrived, and you don’t think the Huckster is lying about it, then you are for sure one of PT Barnum’s suckers.

I explain it at 32. If you beliive the moving cross was an "accident" that they "didn't notice," you are one extremely gullible person.

Like any effective Elmer Gantry, the Huckster is a very good liar.

“Sincerity is everything. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”

It depends, is the way we fight Islam with Christianity, or with American concepts of freedom? If you believe in the former, then send missionaries instead of soldiers to die in the Middle East.

After reading my explanation at #32 describing how the moving cross/shelf image was contrived, check this out.

These are movie camera "tracking dollies."

The only reason to use this sophisticated camera set up is to move the background in a controlled way, while keeping the foreground subject in one place.

That is how they contrived and executed the shot, in order to move the glowing white (spotlighted) shelf/cross from the left side of the shot to behind Huck's head, in exactly the 30 seconds of the ad.

If you still think this was "an accident," I need to sell you a bridge fast.

The tracking dolly is the smoking gun, the proof you asked for above that the moving cross was deliberate, and that Huck is lying about it.

They didn't just come out and "find" a tracking dolly had magically appeared, and decided, "aw shucks, why don't we stick the camera on this here contraption, and slide it from left to right while aiming at Mike's head, just for the heck of it."

BTT!!!

This is an older article, but not bad on Yuckabee.

Huckabee Is A Liberal In Many Ways

By Howard Phillips / The Conservative Caucus
Strategies Bulletin #824—October 31, 2007

Huckabee Apparently Believes
You Are A Bigot If You Oppose Benefits For Illegal Aliens

“On illegal immigration, Huckabee makes George Bush sound like Rep. Tom Tancredo (R.-Colo.). Huckabee has compared illegal aliens to slaves brought here in chains from Africa, saying, ‘I think, frankly, the Lord is giving us a second chance to do better than we did before.’

“Toward that end, when an Arkansas legislator introduced a bill that would prevent illegal aliens from voting and receiving state benefits, Huckabee denounced the bill, saying it would rile up ‘those who are racist and bigots.’

“He also made the insane point that companies such as Toyota would not invest in Arkansas if the state didn’t allow non-citizens to vote, because it would ‘send the message that, essentially, “If you don’t look like us, talk like us and speak like us, we don’t want you.”’

“Like all the (other) Democratic candidates for President, he supports a federal law to ban smoking – unless you’re an illegal alien smoking at a Toyota plant.” Source: Ann Coulter, Human Events, 10/15/07, p. 6

Huckabee, Like Dukakis, Has A Willie Horton

“If Huckabee does get some traction, The Boston Globe’s Susan Milligan has details of a little-remembered aspect of his record as governor: when he paroled convicted rapist Wayne Dumond, Milligan writes, ‘Huckabee, whose self-deprecating humor and easy candor have charmed many on the campaign trail, bristles when asked about the case, in which Dumond – now dead – was paroled from an Arkansas prison, with then-governor Huckabee’s endorsement, only to sexually assault and kill a woman in Missouri... . If Huckabee, who is creeping upward in the polls, gains more momentum, the case is certain to become an issue.’” Source: http://abcnews.go.com, 10/15/07

Wayne Dumond Should Have Been Executed, Not Paroled

“Dumond’s case is notorious in Arkansas. In 1984, he raped a 17-year-old girl. While awaiting trial at his home, he was castrated by, he said, masked intruders. Later, after Dumond went to prison for life, some people in Arkansas saw the sentence as excessive, especially given his mutilation.

“Huckabee was one, and, after becoming governor in 1996, he announced his desire to commute Dumond’s sentence. Dumond’s rape victim, Ashley Stevens, saw it differently.

“Stevens, now 40 and living in the western United States, said she tried to persuade Huckabee not to shorten the sentence for Dumond.

“’I told [Huckabee]: If you ever let him out, he’s going to do it again,’ she said in an interview.”

Huckabee Ignored Rape Victim’s Plea

“She was able to get a meeting with the governor – who, she said, had not spoken to her before announcing his intention to commute Dumond’s sentence – but realized Huckabee had ‘made up his mind.’ So Stevens stood up, she said, walked over to Huckabee, who was seated on a sofa, squatted down and thrust her face inches from his.

“’I said, “This is how close I was to Dumond’s face for an hour,”’ Stevens recalled. ‘”I’ll never forget his face, and you’ll never forget mine.”’

“The parole board – following a closed meeting with Huckabee – decided to let Dumond go. The following year, Dumond committed the Missouri slaying. He died in prison in 2005.”

Even Bill Clinton Was Tougher On Crime Than Huckabee

“If Huckabee, who is creeping upward in the polls, gains more momentum, the case is certain to become an issue. Stevens said she is prepared to campaign actively against him if he becomes a serious [candidate] for president or vice president. “Bloggers have already dubbed the matter ‘Huckabee’s Willie Horton,’ referring to the case of a Massachusetts man who was paroled during Michael Dukakis’s tenure as Massachusetts governor, and then raped a Maryland woman and terrorized her fiancé. The episode tainted the onetime Democratic presidential nominee’s campaign even though Dukakis had not personally intervened on Horton’s behalf. ...

“[Huckabee] also has had a running feud with the Club for Growth – which he calls ‘the Club for Greed’ – which ran ads attacking him for raising taxes to improve schools.

“And the Dumond case is likely to reemerge, dredging up not only the gruesome details of the attacks but the complicated political connections. Stevens, the rape victim, is a distant cousin of Bill Clinton. When he was Arkansas governor, Clinton refused requests to reduce Dumond’s sentence. But while Clinton was off campaigning for president in 1992, his lieutenant governor, Jim Guy Tucker, commuted Dumond’s sentence to 39½ years, making Dumond eligible for parole.” Source: Susan Milligan, The Boston Globe, 10/14/07

And if it was “just a shelf that they didn’t notice,” then why is it empty, except for the three carefully set ornaments?

The ornaments were placed there because the bookshelf shelf is spot-lit from the upper left. If the ornaments were not there, the shelf divider and shelf in the upper left quadrant would be shining as brightly as the "cross" formed by the front edge of the shelves. That would throw off the composition and the "cross" would not read as a cross.

Otherwise, why would you place glass ornaments on a bookshelf? Look at the red ornament. It is hanging over the edge of the shelf, with two green ornaments stacked behind. Wouldn't that arrangement have the tendency to push that red ornament right off the shelf and onto the floor? Why would anybody do such a stupid thing? Why not push it further back onto the fairly deep shelf, where everything will be secure?

The "why", of course, is that they are there to conceal the brightly spot-lit side of the shelf divider and maintain the "cross".

To suggest that it is accidental is ridiculous on it's face.

Again, leave out accusations, just provide first-hand evidence.

Use your eyes and the brain God gave you and figure it out for yourself. Examine the video and determine if it is the least bit plausible that the composition was an accident.

If you are unwilling to do that, nothing can be done for you. You are refusing to see what is right in front of you, and no words from anybody are going to change your mind.

But don't be surprised if people wonder why you are so resistant to the obvious.
