NEW YORK — Russian President Vladimir Putin was named the Time magazine "Person of the Year."

Richard Stengel, Time's managing editor, said the 2007 honor went to the Russian leader "for an extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability."

Others in the running for the honor included Nobel Prize-winner Al Gore and author J.K. Rowling

Attempted to assassinate a political rival. Had his chief political opponent jailed. He had another committed to a psychiatric hospital.

After committing massive voter fraud, his political operation succeeded in having him reelected.

He actively interfered in the presidential elections of both the Ukraine and Georgia.

Currently, he has materially contributed to prolonged instability in Iran and Syia. It is widely held that Putin has been the silent partner to Iran in keeping the insurgency stocked with materiel in Iraq.

He has declared ‘Cold War’ on the US again, not that this was widely reported, and just recently tested a submarine launched ballistic missile.

He’s also nationalized the countries oil fields and pipelines, and essentially kicked out the companies that developed those fields. With this new energy cabal behind him, he twice cut off natural gas supplies to the Ukraine, and threated the same to Western Europe.

Nope, without a doubt, the man has had a good year. Time has a point - the country is stable. However, if Mr. Putin wants your opinion, to be sure he will beat it out of you.

Time had their panties in a twist over Abu Gharib?

The latest TIME has an article on the surge entitled “Hold the Cheers”. Predictably, it goes on to say that Iraq is still all doom and gloom and no one should be happy despite the dramatic drop in violence. Most of all, all TIME readers should continue to hate Bush. Another article proclaims the Republicans are in “chaos” with no candidate.

"Putin is a nationalist and it’s too bad we don’t have a leader like him in the White House."

I'm going to confiscate your house. Then I'll sell it to your neighbors. After which, I'll confiscate it from them, and sell it to the guy down the road. Then, I'll confiscate it again.

All your house are belong to Putin.

Person of the Year is not always an honor and never has been.

In America, all the Time editors name Russian dictator the "Person of the year" and beg him for photo shoot.

In Russia the dictator wants to shoot editors all the Time.

What a country!

This is a reasonable endorsement.

Considering Putin did bring stability to Russia against the chaos of the Yeltsin period and looting done by the oligarchs. He is not a dictator by any means and he is popular with the Russians simply because he has brought in stability and prosperity to the nation.

“for an extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability.”

It’ll be even more stable when he takes dictatorial power, just like Castro did in Cuba. They haven’t had gun crime and everyone works in that people’s paradise.
They have employed a lot of people making polonium and the undertaker business is booming, particularly for the members of the press.
It’ll be even better when he seizes all property for the common good, that’ll show those capitalists.

Actually I’m surprised it’s not Gore.

Love him or not, Putin is trying to walk the really fine line between the Communist past and the capitalist future. People forget that the Person of the Year award is for the most influential person of the year, for better or worse.

This should not surprise anyone. In 1938 they chose Hitler and in 1939 their pick was Stalin. In fact they have been pretty consistent in selecting the scum of the earth for quite some time. Only when they realize that people are truly outraged by their anti-American antics do they throw in someone like Reagan or Pope John Paul II. This 'publication' should have been out of business years ago.

the 2007 honor went to the Russian leader “for an extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability.”

Yep, bringing it to stability has really been a slow step toward the return of communism.

Have our liberal elites ever meet a communist they didn’t like?
Next year when it’s finally announced Castro has died I expect we’ll see him on the front cover as Man of the Year. Yeesh!

Well, I think they also had Stalin as Man of the Year, too.

Time is irrelevant.

I agree with you that the Person of the Year award is for the most influential person of the year, for better or worse.

My argument with Time Magazine is that it was "for an extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability."

They forfeited lots of liberty to achieve that stability.

It’s no joke. In fact, for TIME, it’s a no-brainer. They pick the man who is most “influential” in the year, which is their euphemism for the man most obnoxious to civilization. They’re very much into nonjudgmental journalism, unless it’s against a US Republican. They’re a fine example of MSM journalism with all of its smug, sophomoric, callow ideas, and partisan ideas.
