Huckabee on Christ Ad Brouhaha: 'Paul is Dead'

December 18, 2007 3:07 PM

ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Governor Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., had some fun Tuesday answering a question about a brewing controversy over his latest TV ad called "What Really Matters."

Huckabee is running a Christmas ad in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina where the former Baptist minister invokes Jesus Christ -- the first 2008 Republican candidate to do so in a campaign ad.

In the ad Huckabee says that that at this time of year, "what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and our friends."

Some have suggested there is an image of a cross behind Huckabee's shoulder as he talks to the camera in the ad, but Huckabee dismissed that Tuesday.

"That was a book shelf behind me, a book shelf," Huckabee told reporters while campaigning in Houston, Texas.

Huckabee was asked if his language crossed the line between faith and politics: "Absolutely not," he said.

Huckabee went on to joke, to the delight of the reporters in the room, "I will confess this; if you play the spot backwards it says 'Paul is dead, Paul is dead, Paul is dead.'"

The Republican candidate likened the dissection of his Christmas campaign ad to rumors that Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash at the height of the Beatles popularity and replaced by a doppelganger, and that subtle clues were placed inside the group's music for years to come.

Nah, Ron Paul has better recognition than that.

Why the waiter that served my wife and I dinner last night was trying to decide between voting for Barack Obama or for Ron Paul. (Seriously.)

The way images are crafted these days, this was no mistake.

‘I was just waking at 7:30 and have never seen “Morning Joe”’

Normally thats my morning routine as well, today was the exception because I went to bed way earlier than usual.

There are clues (or supposed clues) on more than one album including Sgt Pepper’s (which was supposed to be the album he was working on when he “died”), Abbey Road, and The White Album.

A famous one is on Revolution #9 on The White Album which when played backwards supposedly repeated the phrase “Turn me on, Dead Man” over and over.

This business of the Christmas card ad reveals to me that Huckabee is taking advantage of Christians in a shameless way, and does not really respect them or value the things they value.

Exactly how I see it. He's a modern Elmer Gantry.

Now we have to explain this to our FRiends in a way that does not alienate them, which is a prickly business, at best.

Very prickly. I have little hope of convincing the True Huckster Believers.

It just amazes me. Huckster clearly thinks that using the cross, and lying about it, is number one a JOKE, and number two, his followers are so stupid, that they won't see it for what it is.

Does it disturb you that people lie to their kids about Santa Claus? and that we preempt the message of the birth of Christ with Santa?

Are you equating the fictional feel-good character believed in by little children with Jesus Christ?

It that what Jesus means to you? My breath is taken away.

Let me try to ask again:

Does it disturb you that Huck has used the cross as a gimmick, and then lies about it? This is Jesus and the cross we're talking about, not Santa Claus.

"If he's correct about this average stupidity, we're doomed."

I hate to remind you - but the "asses in the masses" elected Clinton TWICE......and would elect him again if they could....

In a country where proof of citizenship is not required to vote, an ability to read and write English which assures access to wider sources of information is not required to vote, folks on WELFARE and dependent upon taxpayers to support their multiple generations of fatherless bastards are entitled to vote for the Democrat who will offer them the most of YOUR income, in some precincts the cats, dogs, dead and undead morons vote, hell -- in some states they are even trying to grant FELONS in PRISON the right to vote ------ there can be little doubt of the ultimate outcome an election...

One need only look at the CURRENT LEADERSHIP OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY in CONGRESS to see the result!

A greater collection of incompetent, corrupt, ignorant, pandering poseurs and &**^&^&^&*%&^% &^%&*^*&8 (&*8 *&^*(&^ &*(&&*^&$^ &%^%&*(&%& could only be found in the Turd World and darkest Africa....
We have the makings of our own Zimbabwe in our own Congress!

The horrible consequences of not voting responsibly and intelligently have yet to be FULLY realized by Americans.
I suspect that lucky streak is soon to end....

I don’t think Huckabee used the cross as a gimmick.

Whether he lied about using the bookcase as symbology is a matter of debate

After all of these replies back and forth, I have concluded that you think his cynical use of the cross in an ad, and his lying about it, is just a joke to you.

I think you would help pass the plate in Elmer Gantry's tent, for a cut of the take. Winking and joking all the while.

And that makes me very sad.

Here, where I now live, I was appalled to see the local church(years ago) promote the WWF "Smackdown for Christ"

Years later the same town produced this.. I can only Imagine
