Senate's fate could hinge on a Western clan ( progressives )
Seattle Post-Intelligencer ^ | December 16, 2007 | JOEL CONNELLY

When the nation votes in November, working control of the U.S. Senate could hinge on three Western races involving three members of a Mormon family whose roots in the region go back 155 years.

The Udalls remain rooted in the inland West, where political power has flowed through four generations.

Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., was in Seattle last week to raise money in his campaign for the seat of retiring Republican Sen. Wayne Allard. He is an Outward Bound veteran, outdoorsman and conservationist in the tradition of his father, the late Rep. Morris Udall, D-Ariz.

"It's in his blood. It's in his bones," said Mike Matz, executive director of the Campaign for America's Wilderness.

In the state next door, his cousin, Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., is seeking the Senate seat being vacated by longtime GOP Sen. Pete Domenici.

Tom Udall is the son of Stewart Udall, interior secretary under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson and champion of the 1964 Wilderness Act and creation of North Cascades National Park.

A second cousin on their mother's side is Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., who is up for re-election in 2008 and targeted for defeat by the Democrats.

Democrats will have a more solid Senate majority if both Udalls get elected next November, and approach a veto-proof majority if they beat GOP cousin Gordon.

In his Seattle stop, Mark Udall said his party has a "once in a generation opportunity" to again put a progressive stamp on government.

He voted against the Iraq war, champions a "green energy revolution," and sees a growing progressive alliance in the West ...

Are there any CONSERVATIVE Mormon politicians.

I can’t think of a single one.

There might be some locally known examples, but I don;t know of any on the national level........

Morris Udall made a run at the White House in 1976 — “I always wanted to run for president in the worst way, and I did” ...

chief architect of the 1980 Alaska Lands Act, which doubled the size of America’s national park system.

Alaska was Republican during Carter’s Admin, and ANILCA was dropped without fanfare on the State sealing its doom as a reward for not being Dem. After all the discussion of ANCSA we thought we were expert in land law, talked RS2477 in barrooms, etc., but we didn’t know a thing.

Mormons are the most Republican of any religion in terms of political affiliation, according to most religious surveys.

Morris Udall was a very witty man. As I recall his record was quite liberal but compared to today’s lefties he might have almost appeared to be a centrist. In any case if he had been the Demo nominee instead of Carter the ‘76 race would have been more interesting. And the Dems would have had a somewhat more charismatic candidate.

He's absolutely right. It's likely they'll keep Congress and increase their Senate majority. If they grab the White House they'll use their power to undue the Reagan legacy as fast as they can, including appointing at least two young liberal SCOTUS justices. And he knows from history their time would be limited because there will be a reaction when the American people figure out what they're doing.

The property tax frozen mils will translate into much higher property taxes next year and the government labor unions may go on strike to cover the union dues ...

Hopefully, before the DNC, so that the voters will see socialism in action.

I think the reaction against the Democrats may already be beginning, which would help explain Shaffer’s good early numbers against Udall.

I lived with the development of the law, before and afterward. Within two years of Jimmah Cahtah’s signature, 90 percent of the small family owned coal mines (200,000 tons/year or smaller) in the US had closed. Landowners lost the right in certain cases to see their coal developed for their benefit and a entire new Department of the Interior bureaucracy with police power was created.

President Grover Cleveland issued the Udall patriarch an unconditional pardon in 1885. The family’s Democratic affiliation was affixed.

David Udall sired four sons: Two served as chief justices of the Arizona Supreme Court, a third was a state legislator, and the fourth served as mayor of Phoenix.

Far-left Tom Udall may well replace moderate (but not a RINO) Republican Pete Domenici here in NM. I’m not optimistic that either conservative Steve Pearce or moderate to RINO Heather Wilson can survive in a state with an increasingly number of Hispanic voters (some illegal aliens, no doubt).

I didn’t know they went that far back. I’ve come across Morris and Stewart on many occasions during my research. (Morris, most often was joining in some leftist congressional committee, and Stewart was often mentioned in articles about land deals, and swindles, while he was Sec of the Interior).

I forgot to add... Mark Udall was one of the congresscritters on the receiving end of donations from the several of the Norman Hsu clan.
