A Roswell school resource officer has been barred from local campuses after he pulled a pregnant 18-year-old high school senior out of class and referred her to immigration authorities for deportation to Mexico.
The student was determined to be an illegal immigrant, and Roswell Police Chief John Balderston defended the officer's actions.
But the police chief said Roswell Independent School District Superintendent Michael Gottlieb requested the officer's removal from schools "because he (Gottlieb) didn't want the officer checking on the immigration status of the students."
The student's removal from the school Dec. 5 has prompted an outcry from Hispanic residents in a city where more than half of the roughly 9,000 public school students are Hispanic.
~~snip~~
Dozens of Roswell residents met with Balderston and Gottlieb last week to voice their concerns and met again Monday with Gottlieb.
Under Roswell's school district policy, school officials do not try to ascertain the legal status of students, school board member George Peterson said Wednesday.
"The police officer who did that, he did not have our permission to do that," Peterson said, referring to the referral of the high school senior to federal agents. "He did that on his own."
... Roswell High School senior Karina Acosta [was stopped] at the school for a parking violation in late November and was not carrying a driver's license...
Acosta told the officer she could produce the driver's license and he allowed her several days to do so, Balderston said...
When Acosta did not produce a driver's license, the officer had Acosta pulled from class. In the course of trying to confirm Acosta's identity, the officer learned the student was an illegal immigrant and subsequently contacted immigration authorities, Balderston said.

Further in the article it mentioned that the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund is looking into the case to determine if the police department acted properly. Looks like they will try to bring suit against the officer for doing his job.
What I don’t understand is why any paper thinks this is news.
Another anchor baby? I am so sick of this. Deport them all and give that officer a medal.
Every nickel of Federal and state $$$ that this school gets should be withdrawn.
Roswell? How do they know what planet to send her back to and how they gonna get her there?
This officer should be commended. Schools should be required to report students that aren’t legal or else have all federal and state funds cut off.
It should not be news. It should be a common procedural matter happening every day in every state in this country. But those who are in despair over this girl’s circumstances need not lose any more sleep. She will be back in time to find a US hospital in which to give birth thereby dropping her anchor.
I’m hoping she gives birth in Mexico—one less anchor baby
.
Ain't we lucky to have such gems molding the minds of our young citizens?????
Why don’t they demand that people come over here legally instead? I will never understand it.
"The police officer who did that, he did not have our permission to do that," Peterson said, referring to the referral of the high school senior to federal agents. "He did that on his own."
Sure. No problem. The police will be sure from now on to check with the school board (or other quasi-government body as may be appropriate) as to what other laws they may be empowered to enforce. Or not. What astounding arrogance!
Border Patrol needs to scoop him up and hire him
Send her back and give the officer a medal.
The lib courts will probably declare it an anchor baby since it was conceived in the United States.

This was all over Jim Villanucci's show...from what I could tell on the drive home, there was very little sympathy for the pregnant illegal from the callers.
Kudos to that officer!
