After being a Legal Permanent U.S. Resident for the past 35 years (Canadian citizen /my hubby is U.S. citizen by birth), yesterday December 14, 2007, I was sworn in as a U.S. CITIZEN at the U.S. District Court in Concord, NH !! I am SO PROUD and SO EXCITED !!
93 new citizens were sworn in from 33 different countries! It was a WONDERFUL ceremony ! Every nationality you could imagine was represented !
Within 3 hours of getting sworn in, I went to my local Town Hall and REGISTERED TO VOTE ! So I will be "good to go" for the New Hampshire Primary on January 8th ! whooo-hooo !!!
I totally understand what you are saying. I will never forget my Canadian roots! Canada is a wonderful country, with many freedoms, and like the U.S. is blessed in many ways.
After living as a Legal Permanent Resident in the U.S. for the past 35 years, I have a DEEP love for this country and all it stands for, in spite of it’s faults. My decision to become a citizen is not taken lightly or frivolously - it’s something I have pondered for a long time.
Canada will always consider me to be a Canadaian citizen (Canada recognizes dual-citizenship - some countries don’t). My becoming a U.S. Citizen had no “anti-Canada” connotation to it whatsoever, but was a desire to make a LEGAL committment to the U.S. - a country that has blessed me in a million ways! (I already had a “HEART” committment.)
I want to be able to participate in voting, and “giving back” to this country in whatever ways I can. I really think if you had lived in the U.S. for a significant period of time, you would share these sentiments also, without abandoning your love for your “Fatherland”! (Incidentally, I am of German descent, on my father’s side.)
Being a resident for 35 years is indeed a argument. Beside of that is America still the cradle of freedom to me :). Especially if a dual citizenship is possible (Germany i.e. does not allow a dual citizenship) I also would not have that much doubts. You are right - such are enough reasons to participate as a full citizen in your home.
As I said: Congratulations!
What a great Christmas gift.....for us! How proud and happy we are that you chose to become an American. Bless you!
Congrats! A friend of mine born with dual Canadian/Swiss citizenship got his last year. He had been a permanent resident since about 2 years old(got it at 25).
Congratulations!!!! God Bless you and Merry Christmas!!!!
What a GOOD CHOICE for President!! GO DUNCAN HUNTER!!!!
Congratulations and Welcome!
Hang in there. You have plenty of character references here if you need them! :)
You like Duncan Hunter?
Well, you’ve passed your first test—well done!!
Welcome, fellow citizen. Great to have you aboard.
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Congratulations....welcome to the US and all its faults. Just remember, America has problems...America isn’t the problem. Enjoy!
Hey, congratulations
Congratulations Live Free!
btt
Ditto!
Thank you Pollywog!
On Jan.8th I proudly cast my very FIRST vote EVER in the NH Primary for DUNCAN HUNTER - the only candidate whose 27 year track record matches his TALK! Duncan Hunter is the only candidate with credibility on illegal immigration, because he has actually DONE something about it - (the double border fence Calif/Mexico).
God Bless Congressman Hunter !!!
That is SO COOL ! Congratulations to you too !
I think when one comes here by CHOICE, and goes through all the documention, fees, and red tape to become a LEGAL US CITIZEN, it gives you a greater appreciation of your Citizenship than someone who was born here. I was very much OVER-prepared for the Citizenship Test - I had studied way above and beyond what was required - but I enjoyed every minute of it! I am amazed at how many of my friends and co-workers who were born in the U.S. do not know the answers to some of the basic citizenship questions!
I voted for the FIRST time in my life on Jan.8th in the NH Primary. I was SO excited !
