Thirty-five years after she straddled an enemy cannon in defiance of the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War, Jane Fonda has vets in a frenzy about a visit to Palm Beach for a fund-raiser next week.
Some of the 7,000-plus members of the American Legion in Palm Beach, Martin and Okeechobee counties were expecting to be called to picket Tuesday's luncheon of the YWCA at The Breakers.
The silver-screen legend is scheduled to speak before 300-plus, who plunked down 300 bucks each for the Y's shelter for battered women, Harmony House.
Cops and hotel honchos were preparing. But just in time for Pearl Harbor Day, cooler heads prevailed.
"We're calling everything off," said Legion organizer David Knapp. "Veterans will never forget what Jane Fonda did. But we don't want to damage the YWCA."
The vets' beef also had to do with the buzz that Fonda the star of Barbarella and Monster-in-Law who was nicknamed "Hanoi Jane" by those offended by her 1972 posturing would be receiving a humanitarian award.
"The folks at the YWCA said there would be no award," Knapp said.
Said Harmony House founder Anita Dubnoff: "We don't give awards."
The shindig, meanwhile, has received little publicity. The group's Web site makes no mention of Fonda.
"It's a stealth operation," retired Air Force Lt. Col. Bob Jaegers said, only half-jokingly.
But folks at the Y say a lack of money, not lightning-rod Fonda, thwarted a publicity blitz.
"We knew it would be controversial," event co-chair Joanie Vogel said. "But Jane Fonda is very active in women's issues, and she's a draw."
Uncle Ho’s Ho.
Jane: Unforgiven
JANE Fonda still can’t shake the stigma of being “Hanoi Jane.” Palm Beach veterans are furious that the Oscar winner - who, in 1972, shamefully supported the North Vietnamese and posed with an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down American pilots - is visiting the resort town for a YMCA fund-raiser at the Breakers tomorrow. “Veterans will never forget what Jane Fonda did,” American Legion official David Knapp fumed to the Palm Beach Post.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Draw is not the 4-letter word I have for her.
Naw, just going stealth.
Fonda is about to meet the creme pie hit team at the presser.
More respect than the YWCA deserves.
‘silver-screen legend’ = toilet bowl stain
Thanks for that .. very good to know.
I had no idea they were involved in
promoting the killing of innocent
babies. Disgusting, for a support
organization for young women.
PING~!
I don’t think anyone here will mind if I quote Dan Akroyd:
JANE, YOU IGNORANT SLUT
"Silver-screen legend"? I'm calling bullsnort on that one!
If ever a person deserved a serious beat down.
So, why did the local vets back off?
“Adolf Hitler is very interested in animal rights and HE’S A DRAW”. Wonder how the ASPCA would have been received if they’d taken this money-grubbing attitude in selecting a “speaker”>
BTTT
But for the Democratic controlled congress, Fonda would have been shaved bald and wearing an orange jump suit as she awaited trial for sedition/treason, IMO. Instead our weak willed government let her go and go and go. In my mind she is vermin.
