PORTLAND - The first major winter storm to sweep across Maine this season was farther out to sea than expected, reducing snowfall totals, but there was still plenty of the white stuff to clean up on Tuesday, officials said.
Portland tied the record for the date set in 1890 with 8.5 inches of snow on Monday, according to Bob Marine of the National Weather Service.
Elsewhere, Marshfield in Washington County had 18 inches of snow, Lakeville in Penobscot County 17 inches, Island Falls in Aroostook County 16, Brassau Lake near Moosehead 15.7, Farmington 14.7 inches and Andover 13, the weather service said.
The storm was blamed for a crash that claimed a life in Saco, and it was bad enough for Gov. John Baldacci to send state workers home.
The storm may have produced even more snow if it hadn't tracked farther out to sea that originally forecast, Marine said.
Record for the date is nowhere near the record. If a researcher digs enough he can find some record broken on any given day.
Let me guess, Algore was in Portland, Maine on Monday...
Where’s the obligatory, “it’s Bush’s fault”.
Whatever-—I’m sure glad I live in Texas—LOL!
It’s Bush’s fault ;-)
Maybe I’m jaded, around here 8.5” is a dusting,
But, 8.5 FEET, might just make the news.
LOL! This is a SNL sketch that is begging to be written. Everytime Al Gore shows up to give a speech on global warming, he is followed around by wind and snow.
Sounds like Global Climate Change to me!
Ahhhhh, my day is complete:-))))))
It is cold enough here in Tennessee. 40 degrees and wind gusts up to 30 mph. BRRRRRRR!
The Little Ice Age is starting....
We are due for an ice storm this winter, I think. We haven't had a real one in 7 or 8 years.
- Algore
I do not understand the liberal mind? The earth is warming....
so why is there so much snow? If warming happens you put on a bikini and romp in the sand?......errr snow! Crazy, like Algore they are all crazy!

This means nothing.
It means on this particular date in the past 117 years that no more snow than 8.5 inches had fallen. So
So 8 inches could have happened dozens of times.
And anything under 8.
And just in Portland.
This is called No-News-News.
