Portland [ME] ties 1890 snow record

PORTLAND - The first major winter storm to sweep across Maine this season was farther out to sea than expected, reducing snowfall totals, but there was still plenty of the white stuff to clean up on Tuesday, officials said.

Portland tied the record for the date set in 1890 with 8.5 inches of snow on Monday, according to Bob Marine of the National Weather Service.

Elsewhere, Marshfield in Washington County had 18 inches of snow, Lakeville in Penobscot County 17 inches, Island Falls in Aroostook County 16, Brassau Lake near Moosehead 15.7, Farmington 14.7 inches and Andover 13, the weather service said.

The storm was blamed for a crash that claimed a life in Saco, and it was bad enough for Gov. John Baldacci to send state workers home.

The storm may have produced even more snow if it hadn't tracked farther out to sea that originally forecast, Marine said.

Record for the date is nowhere near the record. If a researcher digs enough he can find some record broken on any given day.

Maybe I’m jaded, around here 8.5” is a dusting,

But, 8.5 FEET, might just make the news.

"Let me guess, Algore was in Portland, Maine on Monday..."

LOL! This is a SNL sketch that is begging to be written. Everytime Al Gore shows up to give a speech on global warming, he is followed around by wind and snow.

It was 70 and sunny here today. However, we have been known to get storms from the NW rolling down the plains that can drop temps by as much as 50 degrees in a matter of hours.

We are due for an ice storm this winter, I think. We haven't had a real one in 7 or 8 years.

Ice I can do without, here in DC commuters were getting jammed on the demolition derby, (beltway) with less than an inch of snow.

Portland tied the record for the date set in 1890 with 8.5 inches of snow on Monday, according to Bob Marine of the National Weather Service.

This means nothing.

It means on this particular date in the past 117 years that no more snow than 8.5 inches had fallen. So

So 8 inches could have happened dozens of times.
And anything under 8.

And just in Portland.

This is called No-News-News.
