NEW YORK (CBS) - A report issued by the city Health Department on rape involving high school students shows a disturbing trend: the numbers appear to be skyrocketing.
Along with your typical teenage woes, an increasing number of city adolescents are dealing with the horrors of rape.
Karen Hartig, director of the Queens Rape Counseling Center and also a victim of rape herself, says she is not surprised that statistics released in the report Monday show an increase in teens reporting violence and rapes while on dates. She says those numbers are on the rise especially since teens are often out late at night and because of an increase in Internet dating.
"I think we are seeing younger girls coming in more so," Hartig says. "People who are looking to assault or attack, predators are looking for people who they feel are gonna get away with it, and they're gonna choose victims that may be more naïve, young, innocent."
According to the report, Teen Safety in New York City, physical violence on dates is up 40 percent. In 1999, 6.5 percent of high school students reported violence, whereas in 2005, the number jumped to 10 percent.
Similarly, the number of reported rapes went from 5.6 percent in 2001 to 7.5 percent in 2005 -- a whopping 34 percent increase.
"We are working to empower young people with the tools and knowledge to recognize what healthy, loving relationships look like," Yolanda B. Jimenez, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence, said in a statement. "Through our peer-education anti-violence programming and outreach, we are taking the first step in preventing domestic violence and keeping teens safe."
The new statistics show that New York City matches the national average.
"This is the worst kind of behavior for kids to engage in, I think it's really bad stuff," says City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein.
Hartig says the most important thing to do after becoming a victim of rape is to seek medical attention immediately.
Among the more uplifting statistics from the study was a decrease in teens involved in school fights, dropping from 18 percent in 2003 to 14 percent in 2005. The decline reverses an upward trend that began in 1997.
Statistics in the study were compiled by an anonymous survey filled out by city students.
no problem really. Planned Parenthood can take care of things without even telling your parents. Of course the offender will get away with it and continue to offend but he may still have things to give his country, like serving as president...
don’t some rap songs already promote this??
if the issue weren't so infuriating I'd laugh at that line.
man. How long, Lord?
Should they ban high school-age dating now?
Obviously Bush’s fault. /sarc
Just banning the rape would be fine - no?
Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Calypso Louie Farrakhan haven’t yet found a way to make money fighting black on black violence or rape.....
It seems they’re only interested in fighting crime against blacks when “whiteys” deep pockets are available...
Sooner or later — the dreaded “N” word will by necessity come back into common use as the most descriptive term for what some folks have become....
Yeah, that sounds like a great solution! Gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside to do something positive.

When rapes are banned.......
Before you get all excited about this topic, ask to see a copy of the report.

The most likely feature of this report is that it is written by a feminist advocate and that they have once again redefined rape down.
This report is probably of the same caliber as the reports that claim that 1/4 of all college students will be raped before they graduate.
In other words, it is total rubbish.
The law is taking care of that. 18 yr old male high school seniors are now sexual predators/rapists because they date their 17 yr old high school girlfriends.
Things that weren't even important enough for anybody to care about just 20 years ago have become major crimes.
I’m 22 and it would feel weird for me to even date an 18 year old. Mostly because just before that, she was 17. People say age is just a number, that’s when both parties are over 21.
Does Joel do stand up?
Global warming?
That depends on what you think is funny.
He's the same guy who let a homosexual teacher keep his job after that teacher raped a male student in a maintenance closet at one of NYC's public schools. This happened a few years ago and was posted and discussed here in the forum.
One of the blessings of Socialism.

Captain Obvious strikes again!
“Im 22 and it would feel weird for me to even date an 18 year old. Mostly because just before that, she was 17.”
I can see how you got your name.
Have a specific state you are talking about?
There are Romeo & Juliet (Romeo and Romeo too) exceptions written into the laws now that permit about 2-3 years leway between an ADULT over the age of consent and minor under the age of consent who is consenting anyway.
They prosecute 20 year olds who buy a beer with their 21 year old friends. They prosecute a 17 year old who tries to get an 18 year old buddy to buy her cigarettes.
But this is just sex.
