If you get in a car crash in the San Fernando Valley, there's about a 50-50 chance you'll flee the scene - and get away with it.
Last year, nearly half of all 16,792 Valley traffic collisions were hit-and-runs, and investigators solved just 54percent of the cases, LAPD Valley Traffic Bureau officials said.
"It's astonishing. It's amazing," said LAPD Officer Douglas Larkin, an investigator with Valley Traffic. "A lot of people are just scared. They've never been in an accident before. They don't know what to do."
Throughout Los Angeles and its neighboring cities, hit-and-runs as a percentage of total collisions have remained steady during the past four years.
Still, the Valley and the rest of Los Angeles' hit-and-run percentages are significantly higher than those of Burbank, Glendale and Santa Clarita.
Last year, for example, about 13percent of accidents in Burbank were hit-and-runs, while Santa Clarita saw about 24percent, and Glendale had about 29percent.
Most of them are illegals without license, registration or insurance. My wife’s car was hit by one a couple of years ago in the middle of Ventura Blvd. The perp just kept going. It’s a disgrace, but in the People’s Republic of LA, what else is new?
Hell, this one is easy. If 50% of the cars are stolen by illegals, how are you going to track them down?
A lot of people are just scared. They’ve never been in an accident before. They don’t know what to do.”.....What???...They have to speak and understand English first!
Hit and run 50% get away?...........Yeah, the one that got hit stays put!...............
I had and accident at lunch today. Lost my whole lunch hour with the cops and a crazy lady.........
Crimes like this can solved in less than 60 minutes, most of the time.
Didn’t get the rest of the day off?
It’s a discrace that this is going on but the Valley is full of illegals. Van Nuys is a joke!
I just wonder how many of these hit-and-runs are parking lot dings.
I got hit three times in California. In each case it was an attempted hit and run, and each time it was a Mexican with no license and no insurance. No one bothered to check to see if they were legal.
Van Nuys Blvd. north from Sherman Way is a real treat!
I remember when the May Co. and I believe it was Bullock’s was there. The May Company is now a three story Mexican Wal-Mart.
Nope. Just around the corner from my work. Finished just in time to get back on the clock..........My car is a POS anyway so I wasn’t too annoyed. The other person’s car clipped my front end when we both made left turns in parallel lanes and she swerved into mine. Then she said I hit her. I said lady, we both were turning. She said “I had the green arrow”, I said , Lady so did I. She just could not grasp the idea that we both were turning at the same time in the same direction. SHE got a citation for improper lane change.
When I was about 20, I was driving home from class (I was in college.)
I passed by the high school I had graduated from a few years earlier, and got hit on the side by some kid driving a beat-up Chevy Cavalier, and he promptly backed up, and took off.
Luckily, this kid apparently wasn’t very popular since a girl that was walking home and saw it happen gave me his name. Turns out (not surprisingly) that he had no insurance and no license.
It gets better - my sister was in his homeroom! Next day in homeroom, she turns to him and says “so tell me, why did you hit my brother’s car and take off like a little p*ssy, anyway?”
She said that black kid turned whiter than anyone in the classroom when she asked him that. About 10 minutes later the cops picked him up out of class.
Of course they didn’t really do anything, but they did make him pay me and my insurance company back, which he did after about a year of making payments.
“I had and accident at lunch today”....In what part of the valley?
This individual rearended me in gridlock traffic that was going about 5 miles an hour.
This person then promptly fled the scene down the first side street.
Luckily for my insurance company and me, this person was driving an extremely distinctive vehicle and I was able to commit the license plate to memory before their car drove off.
The officer who took my statement later told me that the vehicle which hit me was the only one of its model, color and year in the state of New York.
And no, the driver was not an illegal immigrant.
I hate cars who cut over in parallel turning lanes. It’s like they can’t grasp the concept that two lanes continue in a bent fashion over the intersection. She’ll probably contest the ticket or some nonsense.
I backed into a guy's car in a lot of my cigar store. I could have bolted, but I went inside, told him what happened, gave my info, and paid for his cigars. No pain no strain.
As a motorcyclist I’ve made lots of observations about people’s driving habits because my survival depends on it. It is downright scary how many drivers are incapable of making a proper turn.
