CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's leftist President Hugo Chavez said on Friday he will cut oil sales to the United States if the American government interferes in Sunday's referendum aimed at allowing him to run for reelection indefinitely.
Chavez told supports at a rally that the state oil company will halt sales to the United States on Monday if Washington interferes with the vote on the proposed constitutional reform.
The Venezuelan leader and Cuba ally also said he had ordered the military to protect oil fields and refineries in case of political violence.
The reform would also give him direct control over foreign currency reserves while reducing the workday to six hours and expanding social security benefits for informal workers like street vendors.

Who will he sell his otherwise worthless dirty oil to? We have the only refineries that are capable of working with that sludge.

Even if he didn't sell oil directly to the US, he'd be selling into the world market, which means that we'd still have the same amount of oil available.
It's hard explaining simple economic reality to a socialist like Chavez.

Ahh, glad to see he’s in fine spirits. Though I find it ironic; the western press will print Hugo’s rants and raves, but is curiously silent on ME speeches and reports that state they’ll kill us all.

This would have no effect whatever on the oil market, even if Chavez were to not sell one drop to the US. Since oil is a worldwide fungible commodity, all his action means that that he sells more to China (for example) which would buy less oil from Norway, which would sell more to us.

Oil is not oil. There are various grades which are even visually observable.
Venezuelan oil tends to be heavy oil, rich in such components as asphalt. Other grades look much more like motor oil.
Oil from each field varies. Some are better for making gasoline, others for diesel or jet fuel. You do need to tool your refineries for the type of crude you’re going to be refining. You can’t run North Sea crude, West Texas, and Venezuelan crude through the same refining unit. It won’t work.
