Collapse of Kosovo talks threatens war

HE threat of a new war in the Balkans looms after the collapse of talks between Serbs and Albanians over the future of Kosovo.

Three days of negotiations overseen by international mediators broke down yesterday, with both sides refusing to budge over their claims to the breakaway province.

Kosovo's Albanian majority has threatened to declare independence unilaterally. Serbia, which regards Kosovo as the cradle of its civilisation, said this could cause unrest across the fragile Balkans, still scarred from the conflict of the 1990s.

"The peace of the Balkans is very much at stake," said Frank Wisner, the UN envoy to the talks. "It is a volatile region."

Russia, which sided with Serbia to block a previous Western-backed independence deal, looks set to remain opposed.

No precedent exists for the creation of a new state by international committee and against the will of the sovereign power.

Oh come on, the Europeans have been carving up the map to suit their needs for centuries but I guess that doesn't count since they were the "sovereign power" over their conquered territories even when they were pulling out and drawing borders which were guaranteed to lead to decades of hostilities between the people left behind.

I am very uncomfortable with the US sitting in on these meetings of diplomats who cavalierly decide the fate of other countries over a brandy.

I’d pay a hundred dollars to watch Serbian tanks roll into Kosovo.

Geez did the wheels of the Klinton’s “perfect war” fall off?
And to think that slick gave the beheading crowd many if not most of our stored M-14s.

“I am very uncomfortable with the US sitting in on these meetings of diplomats who cavalierly decide the fate of other countries over a brandy.”

The U.S. is not “sitting in” on those meetings. In case you don’t recall the Clintons bombed the Serbs, on behalf of the illegal immigrant Albanian Muslims, until the rubble was bouncing. They were bombed back to the stone age, with deliberate attacks against ALL major civilian infrastructures. Even the Chinese embassy was nailed.

The U.S. drove the Serbs from Kosovo, and ushered in the Muslims. They even enlisted the friendly Taliban/ Mujahideen/ Al Queda to help them do it. WHY?

The U.S. should be backing the Serbs in Kosovo, not the Muslims.

No doubt we can make better but we gave away an awesome battle rifle that will probably be used against us.
