Why has Mike Huckabee turned to something akin to the plague by some on FR?
FR postings | November 28, 2007 | Dane

It's amazing, Mike Huckabee is one of the few politicians who would give the time of day to FR,

Gov. Huckabee's Thank you Letter to FReeper

and yet by some on FR they in mindless hyperbolic posts basically compare him to the plague.

JMO, some FReepers prove the axioms of "fair weather friends" and "no good deed goes unpunished" and also "watch your back", very true.

I like and respect Mr. Bush’s idea of conservatism better.

I feel like he is trying to snow me every time I hear him speak. Just a “gut” thing with me.

Hmmm... Deju vu all over again, as Yogi Berra might say. Arkansas Governor, Presidential Candidate, Slick Talker, now where have I heard this before???

Sounds like the DBM wants Clinton-witch vs. Clinton-lite next November!

Paris Hilton.

Never been there. Anyway, this is an American political site, and I really like Sarkozy. Anybody who's a buddy with Tyson Foods gets on my suspicious list. I'm a centrist on immigration - we should have more legal immigration, and less illegal - but I'd cheerfully trade one million illegal immigrants for one million lawyers, hookworms, and other parasites.

Turned? Nanny statists who think they know better for me than I myself do are akin to the plague. I can name just as many Republicans as Democrats who have instituted some worthless program I didn't need. For my 'protection', or 'safety', or 'health'.

And no I don't care if Tax-em all Mike is a Southern Baptist pastor. I've had the opportunity to meet more than a few pastors in my life because of my family and a pastor's occupation is not what I judge them by. Some were good, some were rotten to the core, some were the best men walking the face of this earth. Someone that uses that occupation as a jumping off point to further his/her career or part of their political stump to justify their unconstitutional stances is already on my bad side. His policies just topped it off.

But when you're a politician whether you follow the rule of law and the limitations on the federal government as intended by the Constitution that is the only thing I'm judging a person by. Huckabee fails. Miserably.

&otIn my opinion, some of the recent Huckabee opposition here is from infiltrators who have recently joined the forum - notably from labor unions in Iowa, and Daily Kos operatives. The leader of Daily Kos identified Huckabee as their #1 threat a couple of years ago, and it's reasonable to assume that they will try to manipulate conservative voters with a disinformation campaign in order to weaken the GOP ticket.

Some of the opposition is from my fellow Arkansas FReepers who are disgruntled Jim Holt supporters. I have a cordial relationship with these folks, and we agree on some matters like our opposition to Huckabee's failed proposal for in-state tuition fees for illegal immigrants. They have some valid points, and I believe their motives are honorable. But they try to portray Huckabee an "open borders" advocate, and that is simply untrue.

The story about Huckabee being a big tax-and-spender is also misleading. Based on his overall record here, I would describe him as a fiscal conservative and a tax-reduction advocate. A lot of the attacks on Huckabee are based on a feud with another Arkansan who wanted the estate tax abolished. I wish Huckabee had worked on that, but overall I don't feel that my state tax burden has increased during his tenure. For most of us in Arkansas, the big problem is the federal taxes, not the state taxes.

On the "nanny-state" criticism, I can see how tobacco users and morbidly obese people could get that impression. But his real emphasis is promoting self-responsibility and self-discipline. It's refreshing to see a politician who embraces those values and sets a good example.

Huckabee has said some dumb things during his political career, and of course, he was recorded on videotape. But I don't see that his errors are worse than most politicians. He also has a reputation as being a bit thin-skinned with his critics. Sometimes he'd be better off just ignoring them.

Here are the things I like about him: He is a man of decency and moral integrity. He is a rock-ribbed conservative. He can be an eloquent speaker. He restored dignity to the office of governor after the disgraces of Bill Clinton and Jim Guy Tucker. And he is the best prepared of the GOP candidates to run against Hillary, based on his knowledge of Clinton history in Arkansas. (For example, a lot of folks have forgotten that Bill Clinton lost two elections in Arkansas.)

I would be satisfied with Mike Huckabee as my president. But I'm endorsing Thompson as president and Huckabee as VP because of several factors - money, electability, etc. In a vice-presidential debate, I'm confident that Huckabee would give a very strong performance against the Democratic candidate.

Huckabee is one of the only candidates who have stated publicly that abortion should be illegal at a federal level. Although I am nearly an anarcho-capitalist to the point of even wanting private coinage of money, 4000 babies a day being murdered is my top priority.
You should emphasize this to the evil FReepers who think murder is secondary to issues like social security and immigration.

Accept for his disciples spamming the forum, he's no where to be seen...Now, just who is doing the backstabbing?

Right. And I'm a little green man from Mars.

Governor Huckabee touts himself as an economic conservative, writing in his biography that he "pushed through the Arkansas legislature the first major, broad-based tax cuts in state history" and "led efforts to establish a Property Taxpayers' Bill of Rights" early on as governor (Arkansas Times 09/22/05), but he only offers a small piece of the picture. It is true that Governor Huckabee fought for an $80 million tax cut package in 1997 that was passed by the Arkansas legislature (Cato Policy Analysis No. 315, 09/03/98); cut the state capital gains tax in 1999 (The Commercial Appeal 02/29/99); and passed the Property Taxpayers' Bill of Rights in the same year, limiting the increase in property taxes to 10% a year for individuals and 5% per taxing unit (AP 03/16/99). However, his record over the rest of his ten-year tenure tells a starkly different story.
* Immediately upon taking office, Governor Huckabee signed a sales tax hike in 1996 to fund the Games and Fishing Commission and the Department of Parks and Tourism (Cato Policy Analysis No. 315, 09/03/98).
* He supported an internet sales tax in 2001 (Americans for Tax Reform 01/07/07).
* He publicly opposed the repeal of a sales tax on groceries and medicine in 2002 (Arkansas News Bureau 08/30/02).
* He signed bills raising taxes on gasoline (1999), cigarettes (2003) (Americans for Tax Reform 01/07/07), and a $5.25 per day bed-tax on private nursing home patients in 2001 (Arkansas New Bureau 03/01/01).
* He proposed another sales take hike in 2002 to fund education improvements (Arkansas News Bureau 12/05/02).
* He opposed a congressional measure to ban internet taxes in 2003 (Arkansas News Bureau 11/21/03).
* In 2004, he allowed a 17% sales tax increase to become law (The Gurdon Times 03/02/04).
We'll not even go into his social concerns and how he thinks he knows better for me than I do for myself. I'd sooner go fishing if this was the nominee

The government cannot legislate morality? What about murder, theft, rape, ect, ect, ad infinitum.
The government should ONLY legislate morality, not civility. That is liberty.

“Right. And I’m a little green man from Mars”

Well, if you say so. Since I can’t see you through the web of cyberspace, I’ll take your word for it.

In Arkansas, the income tax when he took office was 1 percent for the poorest taxpayers and 7 percent for the richest, exactly where it stood when he left the statehouse 11 years later. But, in the interim, he doubled the standard deduction and the child care credit, repealed capital gains taxes for home sales, lowered the capital gains rate, expanded the homestead exemption and set up tax-free savings accounts for medical care and college tuition.

When he had to pass an income tax surcharge amid the drop in revenues after Sept. 11, 2001, he repealed it three years later when he didn’t need it any longer.

He raised the sales tax one cent in 11 years and did that only after the courts ordered him to do so. (He also got voter approval for a one-eighth-of-one-cent hike for parks and recreation.)

He wants to repeal the income tax, abolish the IRS and institute a “fair tax” based on consumption, and opposes any tax increase for Social Security.

On second thought, I think you are lying about being from Mars.

I think some of the attacks are principled but others come from certain members that would like to rid the Republican party of social conservatism and are angry that it now appears possible Giuliani won't get the nomination and accomplish that.
