PARIS: The rituals and acts of rage have an eerie sameness to them: roving gangs of angry youths clashing with the riot police in France's edgy suburbs, the government appealing for calm, local officials and residents complaining that their problems are ignored.
Two years after an orgy of violence in which rioters in more than 300 suburbs and towns torched cars, trashed businesses and ambushed the riot police and firefighters, Villiers-le-Bel and several nearby suburbs of Paris similarly have erupted in violence and destruction.
In one sense, the unrest seems to be more menacing than during the early days of the three weeks of rioting in 2005. Then, the youth seemed disorganized, their destruction largely caused by rock-throwing and arson and aimed at the closest and easiest targets, like cars. This time, hunting shotguns, as well as gasoline bombs and rocks, have been turned on the police.
"From what our colleagues on the scene tell us, this is a situation that is a lot worse than what we saw in 2005," Patrice Ribeiro, a police officer and senior union official, told RTL radio Tuesday. He added, "A line was crossed last night, that is to say, they used weapons, they used weapons and fired on the police. This is a real guerrilla war."
Ribeiro warned that the police, who have struggled to avoid excessive force, would not be fired upon indefinitely without responding.

Just when France becomes an ally again. 1st Armored is over in Germany still. Wonder if the libs would freak if we sent them to Paris to help?
How long until this date becomes an official “holy day” for all the Islamic Satan-worshipers?
The IHT, a fully owned New York Times subordinate, tries to make Sarkozy look bad with its headline. “Paris suburb riots called ‘a lot worse’ than in 2005.”
But what the police spokesman was really talking about is the line that was crossed, and the possible consequences to come. Because Sarkozy isn’t Chirac, and won’t let this continue.
I think he’s preparing the French people for a police response.
It is the beginning of the season for Christmas and that is reason enough for ROP maniacs..
I imagine the French solution to this will be to disarm the real French.
France should turn to the actions of Charles Martel..
The correctional court of Pontoise ordered, Tuesday, the placement under committal order of eight marked young men to have taken part in violences which took place with Villiers-the-Beautiful, in the night of Sunday to Monday. Four of between-them were condemned right now to sorrows going from three to ten months of prison. The prevented lawsuit of the four others, old of 19 to 24 years, was returned to December 28 or January 4, with their request or because it missed parts in the file. - (With AFP.)
It seems that they've already sentenced four of the yutes to jail for last weekend's riots. Justice seems to move a little faster under the new president.
If they are using weapons, it is time to fire back.
To paraphrase General U.S.Grant,stop worrying about what they are going to do to you and start thinking about what you’re going to do to them. Now get some guns up here! The police have GOT to crush this now,or all these scum are going to rise up.
The French police need two weapons.
One is called superslick, which makes concrete or asphalt too slippery to walk on. With a few police spraying it, the rioters cannot cross that line except on their hands and knees. With a little prior planning, they can arrest everyone in the riot. You box them in, then advance with special shoes that can walk over it, spraying in front of you. The rioters all fall down.
The other is “sticky foam”, large quantities of which can be sprayed at the rioters, utterly immobilizing them in goo that can only be removed with solvents. The US Marines used it with some success in Somalia.
In either case, a riot of 300 “youths” results in 300 arrests, which ends any value in rioting at all. They lose both their anonymity and their ability to escape.
Now they've done it. Use of a shotgun for other than it's intended purpose must be a serious offense. Unless.. could they be shotguns for hunting police? But then how did the reporter know what kind of shotguns they were using?
I think it is time for the police to start using some “excessive” force to soften up these punks.
An old axiom from years ago shoot two or three, and the rest will go home. Problem solved. Heartless as it may sound, sometimes, death in the eyes of the idealistic can garner peace.
