Adopt a Soldier recommendations

Posted on 11/27/2007 12:02:24 PM PST by JWinNC

I'd like to adopt a soldier before Christmas. I'm overwhelmed by the number of web sites and organizations that do that sort of thing. Recommendations?

We have several soldiers adopted through the My Soldier program from Manhattinville College. It has been great, and the best part is, once you have the adoption established, there is no middle man, you work directly with your soldier.

Find someone in your community who is actually serving- contact them and adopt someone from their unit. Especially if you can get the name and address of a chaplain who is serving there now, and will know the needs.

You can talk to VFW, local pastors/priests and watch the newspaper to get names.

I have adopted several through this program and they are excellent.

http://soldiersangels.org/

They do ask that you commit to send your Adopted Soldier one letter a week and one package a month. Even if you choose to go through another program you will enjoy the site. It has a lot of ideas of what to send, how to get it there. They will assigning you a person that has been involved for a while to be “your” mentor. Mine saved me a lot of time and trouble getting packing material along not to mention saved me money doing it.

www.anysoldier.com has hundreds of names. These soldiers volunteer to receive packages for people in their unit who rarely get letters or packages from home.

Thanks VV and thank you for your service.

Using anysoldier.com was what I finally decided to do in combination with picking a unit that is home-based here in NC.

We’re sending our first letters and packages to Iraq this Friday and are making plans to continue this going forward on a monthly basis.

Thanks to all,
jw

Thanks for the tip. I just checked out their web site and it sounds real interesting. I have been picking soldiers from anysoldier.com. We just sent a bunch of care packages off so that they will get to Iraq, Afghanistan and the Philippines before Christmas.

The only thing I don’t like about anysoldier is that they say to not send homemade foods. I understand why, but I am sure the troops miss food like that.
