Gov. Spitzer's boast last week that power plants will soon have to pay for the right to emit carbon dioxide is just the latest sign of his unseemly obeisance to over-the-top environmentalism.
Spitzer told Congress how New York has joined 10 northeastern states in a Kyoto-style project called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), meant to combat global warming.
In 2009, these states will force power plants to buy CO2 "allowances," which will be traded on the open market.
Plants will have to get one credit for each ton of CO2 they emit. The supply of credits, to start, will be capped at 64 million - the average annual power-plant emissions in New York from 2002 to 2004. The figure will then drop slightly each year, for a 10 percent cut by 2019.
The plan's flaw is its goal: It's designed to boost electricity costs - and even force some plants to close.

I think this is a good thing. The wealthy leftwingers in NY SHOULD provide the leadership in reducing American greenhouse gas emissions. Afterall, they’ve got the money, and the rich should pick up the tab for this.
Man,the guy just doesn’t know when to quit.I predict recall in his future if he keeps on like this.
lunatics-running-the-asylum alert.
I don't know about unseemly obeisance, but after the license fiasco now he embarks on this? I think the guy is certifiable!

What, you don’t think jacking up electric rates and helping businesses to fail (or leave NY!) will endear him to the voters? :-0
My oh my, who is going to profit?
Business flees NY because of exhorbiant power price.
Nuclear plants to be charged penalty for cooling water discharge.
Even though I share your sentiments about the NY state rats, this initiative is a bad idea. This initiative is a trial run for the entire country. The Colorado governor is doing a similar thing. If carried to completion, these initiatives will drive electricity rates much higher, leading to price controls and shortages. The initiatives of course will not reduce CO2 levels or change the climate but they will make the rats feel powerful.
And who will pay the bills ultimately?????? The Taxpayer....Brilliant.
We need to invest in insane asylums.
Yes it will boost costs — and that will be the acid test for the whole global warming boondoggle. Most people actually seem to believe that no sacrifices would be required to meet the Kyoto requirements — or the much more draconian ones to come. Maybe switch to curly-Q light bulbs — or make their neighbour trade in his SUV for a hybrid — but, nothing that would actually cost them anything. When prices at the pump and the plug go up — expect a serious backlash.
Psst!
Taxes and fees don't hurt the rich - they keep you from becoming rich |
You can bet Spitzer and his cronies are part of this food-chain.
Who funded the election of Gov. Spitzer?
OMG.... This guy has lost it totally.
We have some of the highest electric rates in the country.
Niagara Falls is 5 miles from my house, go figure.
The Huntley plant is across the river and Pataki promised them over 1 Billion in reconstruction funds.
Time to move.
Let them wallow in their mire. The higher taxes are in NY, the less they will clamor for higher federal taxes.
