EMISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (NY Gov Spitzer Plan To Force Power Plants To Buy "Credits" For Emitting CO2)
NY Post ^ | November 23, 2007

Posted on 11/24/2007 2:18:58 PM PST by lowbridge

Gov. Spitzer's boast last week that power plants will soon have to pay for the right to emit carbon dioxide is just the latest sign of his unseemly obeisance to over-the-top environmentalism.

Spitzer told Congress how New York has joined 10 northeastern states in a Kyoto-style project called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), meant to combat global warming.

In 2009, these states will force power plants to buy CO2 "allowances," which will be traded on the open market.

Plants will have to get one credit for each ton of CO2 they emit. The supply of credits, to start, will be capped at 64 million - the average annual power-plant emissions in New York from 2002 to 2004. The figure will then drop slightly each year, for a 10 percent cut by 2019.

The plan's flaw is its goal: It's designed to boost electricity costs - and even force some plants to close.

>> This initiative is a trial run for the entire country. The Colorado governor is doing a similar thing. If carried to completion, these initiatives will drive electricity rates much higher, leading to price controls and shortages.

If implemented at the federal level, we’re screwed.

But, if implemented regionally, it’s a great way for the liberal a$$clown state governors to drive businesses and population out of their states.

If I were the governor of a Southern state, I’d be running full-page ads in NY and CO papers. “Your governor is an idiot! Bring your business to __! We won’t impoverish you with carbon-credit taxes in the name of enviro-weenie polical correctness!”

I wonder how many burned out Michigans we’d end up with before the “brave pioneers” wise up and repeal their stupid programs.

I think this is a good thing. The wealthy leftwingers in NY SHOULD provide the leadership in reducing American greenhouse gas emissions. Afterall, they’ve got the money, and the rich should pick up the tab for this.

That's exactly the same sentiment that sparsely populated states used to say about taxes. Turned out a bit different than envisioned, I'd say. Beware unintended consequences.

I predict recall in his future if he keeps on like this.

Why doesn't he just go ahead and try nationalize the power companies right away?

New York isn't a separate nation?

Does spitzer know that?

We need to invest in insane asylums.

Not while the inmates are running them.

Liberalism in a nutshell: Increase our cost of living while doing zero to reduce carbon emissions.

The objective of this plan is to make lighting, heat, air conditioning, refrigeration, hot water, televisions, radios, computers, and everything else that uses electricity utterly unaffordable to increasingly large segments of the middle classes and unfathomable to rapidly increasing poor and destitute classes. Electricity in the very near future—certainly in four years—will become a luxury, and the overwhelming majority of the people will need to learn to live without it. Even for the affluent, electricity supplies will become erratic and unreliable. These trends will lead businesses that use electricity to increase prices drastically while decreasing availability of their products while dropping jobs and wages. We’re all getting much poorer very quickly beginning in 2009.

The owners of the power plans should all get together and tell the govenor to go phuck himself and shut the power plant completely down. See how many minutes they'll remain offline before the Govenor comes screaming like a little beeotch stop his tax!

Taxes and fees don't hurt the rich - they keep you from becoming rich

It appears that folks have begun to realize that the emperor has no clothes.

When Hillary is quiet, Spitzer is noisy. When Hillary is noisy, Spitzer heads for cover.

From here, it looks like Schumee has distanced himself from Hillary.

I doubt that dramatic increases will happen that fast. In Colorado, commercial users will bear the brunt of higher rates shielding residential customers. The rats will tout job gains in their energy economy and find scapegoats for job losses in other parts of the economy. The rats are pushing hard to nationalize this CO2 nonsense to prevent conservative states from making the liberal states look bad. We need a conservative president to stop this madness.
