We had some fellow Jewish Republicans over for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, plus some newly American South Africans who said they registered properly to vote.
The most passionate aspect of the conversation was who would win the GOP nomination. As far as the dems go, Hillary! is considered a done deal, so the question is, who can beat her, and who will have the chance?
Hands down, Rudy was the clear front runner, and, according to one of the guests who is a syndicated columnist, the best of the lot.
The South Africans, who had never had a Thanksgiving dinner before and seemed to enjoy it, were surprised that Hillary! was the accepted nominee, but otherwise did not express a strong opinion about any of the GOP candidates.
My Dad called from Massachusetts and said he would be voting for Rudy when he gets down to Florida for the primaries, but that he also likes McCain. I asked him what he thought about Duncan Hunter and he said, "Duncan who? Well I guess that's all you need to know about that."
My Mom called from Virginia where she and her husband are having dinner with relatives, one of whom is an environmental science professor at U. of Virginia. They were planning to keep their mouths shut and not start up about Al Gore. I didn't get the play by play on that yet.
To answer the question I had on a previous thread, about who I should be jazzed about, this crowd concluded it was Rudy all the way. No one could figure Romney out and didn't think he could beat Hillary!, Fred wasn't considered serious, and well, as my Dad said, people have been kind of liking McCain lately, just because of his straight talk on the war. My Dad is down on anyone who isn't serious about building a big fence on the border, though.
To conclude, Rudy was the clear winner, and the case was made that, while he can't be trusted on judges (which is very disconcerting), he's good on the war/islamofascisim and he's apparently got a good record on the economy. None of the frontrunners has all three going for them. I do think McCain could beat Hillary because he has what I call the "rochmanus factor," which means that even single women would have mercy on him.
Have you guys been noticing what I’m noticing about Rudy in our community?
Outside of FR, you’ll find that Rudy is enjoying considerable support. Your observations coincide with my own in my local sphere.
My family is pretty cool. We mostly had just nice family talk. Although we did talk a bit about the tanking dollar and the price of gasoline.
One Rudy supporter. 4 said never to Rudy.
0 Mitt supporters. The reason? His religion and his record liberalism. The religion point was interesting. My sister said she wouldn’t vote for him because so many will hold his religion against him. Thus making him a sure loser. Interesting.
I said I would vote for Fred or McCain. There were 2 who said never to McCain too!
My mother said she like Huckabee. We quickly set her straight on his pro-illegal record. She was soon convinced! No to Huckabee!
Generally there was disgust all around.:)
I read many articles about the death of the religious right. We're not dead! There just is no candidate who really espouses our values. I will be glad to get behind the candidacy of a true, solid conservative. Right now, there just isn't one.

I charted freeper responses on how to handle conversations with inlaws, this was the result:
This year was easy. I had my conservative inlaws in town. My liberal inlaws are cronicled in the referenced thread above. p s y c h o
Happy thanksgiving!
If it’s Mcloon vs Hillary, we’ll have two Chinese agents in competition.
Hillaromney vs Obama, we’ll have two cultists battling it out. One in magic underwear and the other trained to jihad in a madrassa.
Rudy vs Hillary will be like siamese twins.
Many combinations of wierdness, few possibilites for a decent president.
You had me at “magic underwear.” Whatever that means, it sounds funny.
One prim little woman said, “we were told never to talk about religion or politics” when I brought up something political at the table. I laughed and said “what else is there?” Also a few days ago, my pc geek called to see how my candidate is doing. He said for all the work I volunteer Duncan Hunter should make me his VP. I said, “oh, no, I don’t want to be VP,” whereupon he said, well, the least he could do is appoint you Secretary of the Interior - Decoration Dept. I have a very loyal pc geek. :)
Your comments on Mitt Romney’s religion are interesting. Although this was not the topic of our Thanksgiving dinner, I had an interesting conversation with a Lutheran minister a few days ago. We were talking about Dancing With the Stars of all things and he said he believed if Marie Osmond won the show that Romney would be the Republican nominee.
I thought he was kidding, but he said the Mormans hold a lot of power in the entertainment industry (first I knew of it) as well as the corporate world. I was not taking him seriously because he is well-educated and extremely intelligent. When I joked that my husband’s great-great?grandfather had been instrumental in driving the Mormans out of Missouri, he said, “Good for him!”
Is this one of those things that is under the radar of most people? I do remember as a teenager, hearing a sermon at the local Baptist Church expressing concern about the rise of Mormans and their activism. Do the mainstream churches consider Mormans as cult members? Glen Beck had a caller a few months ago from a southern listener who said the Christian right would not turn out for Romney. I am beginning to think he may be right based upon local observation.
He's mostly detested here.
That said, he's NOT the best GOP candidate...but he's likely the one who will iwn the nomination...and it's MY hope that all republicans will rally around him if that comes to pass. Of course, I'd prefer Fred.
I believe either could beat Hillary...but I don't think any other GOP candidate could.
Again, Rudy is not the best GOP candidate by a long shot. However, he may be our ONLY shot.
ML/NJ
And the WON'T be one this cycle. Time to choose.
It's either Hillary or whomever the GOP nominates...those are the only two real choices.
We did, too. But we liked them and ate the Methodists instead.
Yuk, Yuk...OK, I'll go read the article now. ; /
They will not turn out for Romney. Count on it.
You are right. There won't be one. I have chosen. I am voting against the RAT nominee. I will not be campaigning FOR the RINO. I'll be trying to persuade my friends that no one we have could possibly be as bad as the RAT.
If you were to post that info on certain threads here at FR, well lets just say you would be FLAMED!
Don’t you know they were only innocent victims? s/ I'd love to hear his gg father's story though. Yes there are lot of churches who consider them to be part of a cult. There are even freepers who label Mitt as part of a cult.
I was also surprised to hear her say that "Lions and Lambs" was "the wrong way to give a political message". Usually propaganda like this just gives here more resolve in her anti-Bush rants, but not this time.
