Oh sure, they can super-size themselves at McDonalds or Burger King, but can't afford an apple or a carrot. Give me a break.

We’d probably all be healthier if we spent 70% of our food budget on fresh fruits and veggies.

They could increase funds for food if they quit buying bottled water.

It is easy to scoff at this but I agree that fresh fruits and veggies are a little bit pricey. Here in Jacksonville, FL, a head of cauliflower is $2.50, the same price as a Big Mac. I bought my wife a juicer and it takes $5.00 worth of strawberries to make 12 ounces of juice. Oranges are a buck a pound and apples aren't much less. Cucumbers are a buck each. Sure, lettuce is cheap but it doesn't really have any nutritional value.

About the only cheap food is rice and potatoes. Even chicken is getting expensive.

"People with more money eat more fruits and vegetables"

Usually, people with more money are smarter too...and less self-indulgent. Even more in control of their base instincts.

Even the local 7-11 has apples.

in rural areas, convenience stores far outnumber supermarkets and grocery stores

Yup. In my rural area there are two convenience stores and one supermarket. Two to one.

But I bet the dollar volume of the supermarket is many thousands of that of the two convenience stores.

This is Thanksgiving Day

Simple. Require all restaurants (especially those high-end ones the Hollywood elite, politicians, etc. frequent) to set aside 1/2 of their tables for low-income dining.

"Many low-income Americans can't afford to eat healthy foods"

But, they were able to afford a Countrywide mortgage.

Good Lord! Not this again! The truth is that poor people CAN afford to eat healthy. Several years ago a group set out to “prove” that poor blacks in rural areas did not eat as well as more affluent whites. What they found is that the poor blacks ate simpler, higher nutrition, lower fat foods than their white counterparts.

BTW, it is only in rich countries where the “poor” are fatter than the population as a whole.

"I think it's a matter of raising awareness among health professionals

This crosses the line. Checking grocery ads and making out your grocery lists is not in the job description for health professionals who are probably already donating their services to the great hoard of uninsured.

What a bunch of baloney.

Eating healthy isn’t hard or expensive...It does require some smarts and some planning.

Plenty of good nutrition can be had by eating small portions of cheap fast food. Just skip the fries and soft drinks.

Okay.....somebody ‘splain to these folk how to plant some seeds.

Hey, a big bucket on a patio and boom, nice big tomato plant.

Any place with some soil can be made into a little garden.

This is another example of “minorities and poor hardest hit”. Like we are too stupid to plant a garden.

Heck, one can grow herbs in a damn window sill.

Michael Dukakis wanted to encourage growing Belgian Endive. We didn't listen. He was a prophet in the wilderness. This has all come back to punish us. And, don't say you Freepers weren't in on this. You were. Shame, shame.

I’m going to plant a little garden in our back yard next year. With tomatoes at $1 each, I expect to save a lot of money. We live in the suburbs, with a small back yard. Enough room for a small garden.

New dietary guidelines recommend that Americans eat nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day, up from five servings in the previous guidelines.

I’ve got my own guidlines .. Self reliance without sticking it to someone else to get ahead . That includes not giving a rat’s ass about you policy mug wumps .
And that is as kind as I am going to be on the matter .

And a second study found that in rural areas, convenience stores far outnumber supermarkets and grocery stores -- even though the latter carry a much wider choice of affordable, healthy foods.

Pretty much everywhere there are more convenience stores than supermarkets and grocery stores because they are...convenient! If these goofballs did a study in urban areas they would find the same basic stats. And though the supermarkets have a better choice and price for various items it also tends to cost money to get there be it car or mass transit.

Just another useless study that cost all taxpayers more.
