New Hampshire voters havent seen or heard much of presidential candidate and U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., this campaign season, but Pittsfield resident Bernie Dolan wants to change that. An engineer who moved to New Hampshire three years ago from Massachusetts, Nolan has taken on a volunteer role as the deputy New Hampshire campaign director.
Nolan has no previous campaign experience, but hes also never been inspired to get involved by anyone like Hunter has inspired him. In a recent interview with NHpols.com on his car ride home from work, Nolan talks about his new role with the Hunter campaign, his past political leanings (hes been a fan of both Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy), and about Hunters chances in the New Hampshire primary.
Have you ever been involved in politics before?
Other than voting and that sort of thing, Ive never been involved in a campaign. Then again, Ive never come across somebody who has a set of core beliefs that are very much like mine. Whether moving away [from] government-sponsored health care, or politicians who talk about government this and government that, [Hunter wants to] let the individual do it.
What made you decide to go with Duncan Hunter?
The biggest reason was that I didnt see anybody else who even came remotely close to [Hunters views]. Compare him with what I see on the Democratic side, when I see [the Democrats] speak of nationalized health care, I get scared. If you look at any endeavor the government tried to run, they havent done a good job. Take a look at Social Security. If a company ran Social Security like the government does, they not only would be fired, but criminal charges would be filed against them.
When did you take on this role as volunteer state director?
I stumbled across his Web site and I said, yes, I like what I see, I signed up [on the site] and said I can volunteer to do a couple things. I got a few responses asking me, can I do this, can I do that. [I told them] I am married and have three children and a job that requires some travel.
What have you been doing in the state to get out the word out about Hunter?
Basically, Im trying to get the boundaries of the job down. Im relatively new to this. Im trying to get [in touch with] the NHGOP, there is a Meetup group organizing. It is relatively small now because people dont know much about him. I guess that would be my job.
Im sure there is a certain amount of people who are looking at Mr. Hunter who are probably very similar [to me]. There is no big campaign budget to allow you to hire people to organize and stand at the corner with different signs. Everyone is living their lives.
As a volunteer, how do you squeeze in the time to get work done for Hunter?
You conduct interviews on the drive home and hope you doesnt say something bad. You try to work around it.
Are you in close contact with the national campaign?
Yes. There was a lot of e-mail going back and forth today. Different media outlets are looking for a direct quote on different issues. I want it to come directly [from] the candidate himself. Im not going to pretend to speak for somebody. Im not going to say, this is his stance. Its not my place to do so. I will say that everything Ive read, if you look at his voting record, he has a very consistent record you can track. In my opinion hes the best person for the job.
Hunter is somewhat of a long-shot candidate. What do you consider a successful run in New Hampshire for him?
I would be real happy seeing him win New Hampshire. If our campaign can come together quickly -- what are we voting, next week? -- Im not playing for second place or third place. It is my opinion that the more people find out more about Mr. Hunter, the more they are going to say hes the one to lead this nation forward.
To play for second, that doesnt work for me.
Oh oh, bottled water and Starbucks? LOL
DH Ping
Dang, I had heard you got banned. I guess I celebrated prematurely, but I think they have a pill for that.
SECOND.. Great Post !!
THIRD.. TOWARD VICTORY !!
Excellent. Some traction in NH would sure help DH nationally, polls be d@mned. If he’s seen as a horse in this race in the early primaries, the money will follow.
Yes, I witnessed a bit of premature grave dancing. LOL
BTTT
This is great news! Welcome, Bernie Dolan, and we wish you every success in bringing in N.H. voters for Hunter!
Let this be an inspiration for those of us serious about Rep. Hunter enough to become Republican Precinct Committee Officers, attend Republican caucuses, and become Hunter delegates to the local conventions.
We can do this! :)
yes we can... and yes we WILL..
TOWARD VICTORY
Welcome back! We missed you!
Did you have fun during your time-out? :P
Let’s help Bernie Dolan out!
Who’s a Duncan Hunter supporter from NH, or does anyone have friends/relatives who would write a letter to the editor to a NH home town newspaper?
Also, call any talk shows that airs in NH.
Even if Hunter comes in before any of the front runners in NH, he will get attention. But, of course, I’m aiming for No. 1!
The momentum is building as more people listen to Duncan Hunter. The FR poll is a good indicator. Go DUNCAN HUNTER!!!
Most papers will only print a 300 word letter to the editor.
Here’s mine from this week in my local paper.
The Presidential Candidate youre not supposed to know about
The media gives him a fraction of time to respond in their debates compared to candidates they promote. The media loves globalism, unlimited immigration and out sourcing your jobs.
Party leaders dont want you to hear a candidate with a consistent pro USA record or someone with the courage to fight his own party on cheap labor treaties or foreign countries managing US ports. Both parties favor cheap imported labor over US workers, dangerous imports from China instead of US manufacturing and the thousands of illegal aliens that cross our borders daily to take jobs and drain social services.
HE is the only one that fought the China trade imbalance. HE voted against NAFTA, CAFTA, LOST, The WTO, treaties that import cheap labor , out source USA jobs, threaten our sovereignty .
He earned a Bronze Star serving in combat as an Army Ranger and led the House Armed Services Committee, receiving awards like Keeper of the Flame and is endorsed by Chuck Yeager.
HE is the only one to write legislation that fenced some of the Mexican border. The only one with enough compassion to take water to suffering migrants in the desert .
Californias Congressman DUNCAN HUNTER has successfully enacted sensible legislation, one will build another 800 miles of fence on the border.
Duncan Hunter didnt just start talking about important issues unlike ALL the top tier candidates. Hes spent 3 decades tirelessly serving you! You owe it to yourself and your country to be informed. The media wont tell you and if you allow party leaders to pick your candidate, you settle for more of the same, or worse. Your choice.
My choice is the proven record, leadership and integrity of DUNCAN HUNTER.
