When some of the world's leading religious scholars gather in San Diego this weekend, pasta will be on the intellectual menu. They'll be talking about a satirical pseudo-deity called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, whose growing pop culture fame gets laughs but also raises serious questions about the essence of religion.

The greatest trick Cthulhu ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Flying Spaghetti Monster or Pan-dimensional Evil Power - you decide.

Basically anti-Christian parody--here's a wiki on it.

Actually it began as an anti-Kansas School Board parody, mocking those who would put Creationism on a par with Evolution, thus reducing religion to a science.

Sounds kinda like the one the muzzies have. Substitute “hashish huka” for “beer volcano” and you get it about perfect.

Actually, the funny part is that by invoking the FSM, the anti-Design crowd loses their argument: “Okay, so you admit that the universe is clearly designed, but are simply arguing about the Designers form?”

Actually it's more about having the ID crowd admit that there are many different versions of creationism. Makes identifying that designer a bit harder.

Don’t be surprised if you find one in a bowl of “Pho” ... I’ve seen some really suspect articles in those ...

Spagnostics may mock the Spaghedeity, but those who have been touched by his noodly appendage know better. Besides, since his chosen people are pirates then I think beer would go over better in paradise than hookahs

Actually, for theology students, this is a great activity. There is a big difference between true theology and a made up religion. This type of project will isolate the differences quickly and obviously. It isn’t liberal and it isn’t silly. It is a pretty creative way to think about the elements of religion, and truth, vs the elements of fiction.

The most fun would be a religious war between the Pastafarians and followers of the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

That's not a bad idea. If Pastafarians ever get around to having organized worship services it just might get adopted.

I recommend it ... northern Virginia is loaded with Pho joints of varying quality. Most are "good" or better ... be aware that they use some really cheap cuts of cow ... tripe, tendon, etc. along with the stuff we'd normally consider "meat". Makes for a really rich broth, but looks weird.

My Taiwanese friend says it's pronounced "fong".

This is not mocking God, it is mocking humans who are supporting the theory of ID. The point is that ID as presented to the Kansas School Board, would open the door for teaching religions of many kinds, including those that are made up, like the flying spaghetti monster.

IMO Religion should not be taught in schools. Religion is important and I want my children to learn it from someone who shares my beliefs and faith. Opening the door to some unspecified designer, will result in all kinds of Gods and religions being taught to our school aged children.

Dude, you are way off base here. If you are jonesing for a shriveled old crone assault, you need to go to DU - just tell them you are a born again honky and they’ll go nuts. I guarantee it...

Besides, the older (40 +) religious wimmin here at Free Republic aren’t “shriveled old crones”; they’re “prettily patina’d pepitas” (PPP).

I eat spaghetti monsters for breakfast.

(PPP since ‘03)
