House Democrats pushed through a $50 billion bill for the Iraq war Wednesday night that would require President Bush to start bringing troops home in coming weeks with a goal of ending combat by December 2008.
The legislation, passed 218-203, was largely a symbolic jab at Bush, who already has begun reducing force levels but opposes a congressionally mandated timetable on the war. And while the measure was unlikely to pass in the Senate let alone overcome a presidential veto Democrats said they wanted voters to know they weren't giving up.
"The fact is, we can no longer sustain the military deployment in Iraq," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Staying there in the manner that we are there is no longer an option."
The White House pledged to veto the bill, and Republicans said they would back the president.
"In addition to infringing upon the president's constitutional authority as commander in chief, the bill would mandate a precipitous withdrawal of troops that could increase the probability that American troops would have to one day return to Iraq to confront an even more dangerous enemy," an administration statement said.
The bill represents about a quarter of the $196 billion Bush requested for combat operations in the 2008 budget year, which began Oct 1.
It would compel an unspecified number of troops to leave Iraq within 30 days, a requirement Bush is already on track to meet as he begins in coming weeks to reverse the 30,000 troop buildup he ordered earlier this year. It also sets a goal of ending combat by Dec. 15, 2008, and states that money included in the bill should be used to redeploy troops and "not to extend or prolong the war."
The measure also would set government-wide standards on interrogation,...

Something like Jimmy Carter’s new beginning. Then the roof fell in, domestically and in foreign affairs.
My sincere apologies, then. My mistake.
All they'd have to do is pull their collective heads out of their collective posteriors and they'd see it. Just a click here gives any number of stories on any day that show the progress being made. Too bad the journalistas of today just regurgitate the Dem talking points to "prove" we're losing.
Yep !
That’s my take, the slow bleed is what’s going on in the dRAT ‘controlled’congress.
Bush pulled his head out ... finally.
He’s swinging the veto pen like a jihadist swinging a sword.
The moonbats are besides themselves with anger that their wins in October 06 have given them absolutely nothing but failure.
The queen bee, Hillary is slow bleeding in the polls, due to the fact she switches positions more often that a porno queen, and got caught.
The times they are a changin’.
Accepted- I should have used quotation marks- My many posts urging drafting of John Bolton should be self evident.
Too bad the journalistas of today just regurgitate the Dem talking points to “prove” we’re losing.

or
The dRATs get their talking points from MSM journalists.
I guess it’s pretty redundant, huh?
Redundant is a media more willing to make news than report news ... for the cause.
The Dems do this for show, then cave when the bill is vetoed. So they make Bush go to the middle of the three-ring-circus, sign the veto, and then they turn off the lights and give him what he wants. Very predictable and they do no harm in the end.
I say we rotate IN 218 politicians and bring home 218 MIL.
Emphasis bump
This is why we need veterans and/or people who understand the need to protect our country from possible attack, including waging necessary wars, in Congress and the White house...
Former Flower Children of the 60’s are a danger to the security of our country...
I don’t understand. Why do the libs call for Bush to begin bringing troops home when, IIRC, about a week ago, the news was that it had already begun? On another, similar note, HRC says she doesn’t support the driver’s licenses for illegals after the NY governor withdraws the idea. How come these...late to the trough...announcements aren’t noticed?
It’s true the Internet is available to the vasst majority of the adult population but you would have to have those adults looking for news and the truth on the internet rather than just shopping and pornography. The real question is how many adults look to multiple sources of internet for news.
Also there is word of mouth from people who see things or have then sent to them by others and tell their friends (or enemies) or neighbors.
Bottom line is info is spread far, far quicker today then ever before and is available to more and more people.
The "purpose" of this war was among other things regime change. That was accomplished. It also was through this change to keep Hussein from ongoing development of a nuke which we NOW KNOW he was intending to do. Imagine if we had not taken him out what we would be into with both Hussein AND AMADOUCHEBAG both working towards the bomb.
Regarding the War in Iraq: I was disappointed to learn that 3 days after G.W. Bush said, "Mission Accomplished" (a proud moment) British Oil, Sunoco, and Sun Oil were drilling in southern Iraq.
Who did you think would develop the oil fields for Iraq? The Iraqi's haven't the equipment or technology to do it themselves. Who would you rather have seen doing this, Russia, Argentina?
I hope you are right. I’d like to see the stranglehold of the MSM broken decisively this election. And then I’d like to see these daily polls debunked. But one thing at a time. ;o)
