Get Kids Vaccinated Or Else, Parents Told
Washington Post ^ | 14 Nov 2007 | Nelson Hernandez

The parents of more than 2,300 Prince George's County students who failed to get needed vaccinations could face fines of $50 a day and up to 10 days in jail if their children do not meet the state's immunization requirements, county officials said yesterday.

The threat of legal action is a last resort after months in which Prince George's has struggled to get its 131,000 students immunized for chicken pox and hepatitis B, as mandated by the state.

More than 2,300 students have not been immunized and have been barred from attending schools, almost two months after a Sept. 20 deadline for meeting the requirement.

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way, but it's got to get done," Prince George's State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey (D) said at a news conference in Upper Marlboro.

"I'm willing to move forward with legal action." School officials have made calls, sent letters and conducted home visits to make arrangements for free appointments for the needed shots.

But often the students' addresses and phone numbers have been outdated, making contacting them difficult. Other students have received the vaccines but failed to get the necessary booster shots.

The school system turned to the justice system as a final option and received the backing of Circuit Judge William D. Missouri, the county's administrative judge, and Circuit Judge C. Philip Nichols Jr., who handles juvenile matters.

"This is an educational crisis," said R. Owen Johnson Jr., chairman of the school board. "This is a public health and a children's rights issue."

And what is more the government has a history of forcing booster vaccines on children who have had known reactions...

Also, in NYC doctors are severely pressured NOT to report reactions.

You’re thinking of Hep C, not Hep B. Hep B is caught from either blood or stool and is passed along really easily because kids don’t always wash their hands and they’re always getting cuts and scrapes.

You're wrong. This is from the Mayo Clinic website on risk factors for Hep B:

Risk factors Anyone of any age, race, nationality, sex or sexual orientation can be infected with HBV. But you're at greatest risk if you:

- Have unprotected sex with more than one partner. You're at risk whether you're heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual. Unprotected sex means having sex without using a new latex or polyurethane condom every time.
- Have unprotected sex with someone who's infected with HBV. - Have a sexually transmitted disease such as gonorrhea or chlamydia.
- Share needles during intravenous (IV) drug use.
- Share a household with someone who has a chronic HBV infection.
- Have a job that exposes you to human blood.
- Received a blood transfusion or blood products before 1972.
- Receive hemodialysis for end-stage kidney (renal) disease.
- Travel to regions with high infection rates of HBV, such as sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, the Amazon Basin, the Pacific Islands and the Middle East.
- Are an adolescent or young adult residing in a U.S. correctional facility.

In other words, the risk factors for Hepatitis B are exactly the sam as for HIV, which would exclude most school-age children. It is not passed through casual contact. The only reason for mandating all students to be vaccinated is to make it economically viable for the vaccine maker.

Actually, most vaccine data is under lock and key under CDC.

Real science, takes FOIA request... (unlike having access to safety/efficacy data for statins and other drugs...

I suppose if the vaccines were around when I was a youngster, my mother would have had brother and me duly vaccinated.

And what is more these reactions have been systematically underreported, which is why shot909 set up their own reporting database.

Have a job that exposes you to human blood.

This is key. Anybody in health care is at risk for Hep B and Hep C. The risk is far higher than for HIV and most of us in health care are far more worried about getting hepatitis than getting AIDS. I know a couple of people who have chronic hepatitis due to occupational exposure.

Thankyou. And it’s reasonable to suppose that no firm conclusions about sub-pops can be made in the absence of supporting data.

You’re right. This was back in the 50’s — I think all we had were polio, diptheria, whooping cough and smallpox...maybe. We didn’t have vaccines for any of the others.

Autism cannot be detected in babies very easily. It usually pops out about 3 years old. You’d have to wait until the kids in 4 to immunize them to see if the shots caused the problems.

I thought you would be interested in this after the HPV vaccine threads and all the discussion about how one could opt out.

Going back through this thread I found this comment:

That's so predictable.

Next they will want to take custody of children whose parents refuse to be apart in this great experiment.

The state can do anything they want to foster children.

The risk of having a large population of unvaccinated children is that these older unvaccinated children may infect an unvaccinated neonate resulting in a life threatening illness that the neonate’s immature immune system has a great deal of trouble fighting off. There are numerous vaccinations that can only be administered once the child loses protective maternal immunoglobulins that are present at birth.

People should do more reading on legitimate websites (CDC or AAP) regarding this issue and less listening to “experts” like Jenny McCarthy (for those who don’t know she has been on Oprah and Larry King claiming vaccines are responsible for her child’s autism) (McCarthy went on to explain that she cured her child’s autism by treating him with an anti-fungal).

I’m sorry your mother and aunt had to suffer polio. The polio vaccine is the only one I’ve had. Today I have MS, which I developed at the age of 50.

Doctors have yet to pin down a known cause of MS, but vaccine solution is an area that is being researched as a possible causation.

Is there a causal relationship between vaccines and autism, SIDS, etc.,.? Who knows. One can only do their research and make up their own mind concerning vaccinations.
