Buddy Witherspoon, a long-time South Carolina committeeman to the Republican National Committee, will be announcing this week that he will challenge Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) in the GOP primary, according to a source familiar with his intentions.
Witherspoon, an orthodontist, is known as an arch-conservative on social and cultural issues, and plans to run a campaign centered on fighting illegal immigration.
But as a first-time candidate, he will face an uphill battle raising his name identification and money against a very well-funded incumbent. Graham has over $4.2 million in his campaign account at the end of the third quarter.
Graham has been criticized by some conservatives for his role in advocating for comprehensive immigration reform legislation, which failed to pass the Senate earlier this year.
The primary is scheduled for June 10, 2008.

Yep, but more importantly, he said that opponents of open borders were bigots.

You gotta know that isn't coming from 'the people'.

Lindsey Graham Gets GOP Primary Challenger <<
This is not news. Lindsey Graham has had a "primary challenger" for monthes now. In fact, officially he has two of them so far -- Tim Carnes & John Cina. If this "Buddy Witherspoon" makes it official, he's up to three challengers to split the anti-incumbant vote.
Seems to me they'd be smarter to unite around one candidate. Chuck Hagel would probably still be running today if his primary "opposition" consisted of three obscure GOP activists instead of one major heavyweight (A.G. Jon Bruning, though more candidates have filed in the aftermath of Hagel's retirement plans)
Oh well, if Tim Carnes, John Cina, and Buddy Witherspoon (sounds like a breakfast product) all want to run, more the power to 'em. They can make their case why they alone should be Senator, and the people will decide.

True, but Carnes and Cina have no name recognition. Witherspoon has some.

Buddy Witherspoon goes way back in SC Republican politics. He is the first challenger who is NOT an “obscure GOP activist.”

Witherspoon is the 12 year National Republican Committeeman from SC. Unlike the others, he is well known among activists and a credible candidate.
