The wave of recent films set against the backdrop of war in Iraq and post-9/11 security has failed to win over film-goers keen to escape grim news headlines when they go to the movies, analysts say. In a break with past convention, when films based on real conflicts were made only years after the last shots were fired, several politically-charged films have gone on release while America remains embroiled in Iraq.
Almost without exception, however, the crop of movies have struggled to turn a profit at the box-office and in many cases have received a mauling from unimpressed critics as well. Veteran television producer Steven Bochco, .... said it was hard to engage audiences in a "hugely unpopular war."

The public is not shunning "Iraq films". They are shunning "Iraq films" that denigrate America and its fighting men. If Hollyweird actually made an Iraq film which upheld American values and portrayed a hopefully story, people would go see it.
Apparently their delusions know no bounds. Winning the war is popular, and these anti-American POS films are hated by the American public.
Unpopular war? My history must be a bit shaky, but when was our last popular war?

My first thought when I saw Cruise, Redford and Close making a movie about the war is unprintable. I'm sure the war would be politically neutral with that bunch of pacifists and pseudo-intellectuals making a flick about it.
Who needs that crap. Get that in the papers and the 5 O'Clock news every day.
Not the Iraq war but I actually like The Kingdom. It had some issues, but generally a pretty entertaining film.
As for “unpopular” war, is there such a thing as a “popular” war? Good grief.

That is absolutely right. Who in his right mind would go see a movie about the rape of an Iraqi schoolgirl by a US soldier, or about rendition and torture - all of it reeking with anti-Americanism. Mark Steyn said several years ago that Americans want the kind of war movies which portray a Nascar driver joining the Marines and going to Iraq or Afghanistan to kick jihadi butt - a movie with heroism, sacrifice, and courage, not this kind of anti-war, anti-American BS. And anything Looney Clooney is in, I’ll avoid like the plague. He’s such a pansy.

The second half of this bad long term news story for Hollywood is that, once someone becomes aware of media bias or (movie bias) they never return to not seeing it.
Just as in the MSM, the weight of decades of Hollywood “messages” may have finally killed off that message avenue for good.
With a more aware, more sensitive audience, Hollywood may just have to drop the heavier bias for good.
Saying that the Iraq war is “unpopular” is like saying that AM radio is “unpopular”.
The “right” war film with Iraq as a reference point could do good box office. Just as conservative talk radio has kept AM radio alive and quite profitable.
