DES MOINES, Iowa - This was going to be a column that spoke truth to power, that criticized the top presidential candidates and shed light in a maelstrom of spin.
But then Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton called such attempts "piling on."
Swift Boating.
Sexist.
So let's just call this unsolicited advice, and hope that the Democratic front-runner doesn't notice.
First, for the Democrats:
CLINTON: You're smart, funny, qualified and more personable than most voters realize. So go with that. Stop letting your strategists tie you in knots with their polls, focus groups and microtargeting. It's brilliant stuff, but they're making you too cautious and unwilling to take clear stands. That won't fly in Iowa

Democrat activists, pretending to be "Journalists" are in full panic mode. Queen Hillary is looking a lot less inevitable to them these days.
This column is so absurd I start laughing at the 1st sentence and laughed all the way thru it.

“You’re smart, funny, qualified and more personable than most voters realize”
Ummmmm, yaaaa. Kind of like how we find out how funny algore is and what a cut up he is. The idea that he is stiff, boring, and just a turd are completely unfounded.
J Forbes kerry is not an elitist snob but a real funny easy going every man...
This is starting to sound familiar.

The Democrats had a dust up so now it’s time to group hug or they start losing voters no matter who get the ticket. Voters who are notoriously hard to get to the election booths to begin with. The neutral ground is Bush bashing.

Fournier began his journalism career at the Hot Springs, Ark., Sentinel Record in 1985. He transferred to the Arkansas Democrat in 1987 and began covering then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton a year later. In 1989, Fournier was hired by The AP, which transferred him to Washington, D.C., after Clinton’s election in 1992.

"...spoke truth to power..." If I never hear this nonsensical phrase again, it'll be too soon.
I never read past this sentence, unless its lampooning it.

So he's just a life-long Clinton hack. It still seems to me that there's another reason I recognize his name.
For some reason, his name evoked images of Jayson Blair and other "reporters" who were caught filing fake stories.
Thanks for the assist.

“Piling on” is from football. Usually called a “late hit” now, it’s when additional defensemen run up and jump on the man with the ball when he’s already down and the play’s been whistled dead. Sometimes you’ll hear “dog pile”, but that’s more in the context of a free-for-all or the arrest of a felon.

The phrase “speaking truth to power” goes back to 1955, when the American Friends Service Committee (Quakers) published Speak Truth to Power, a pamphlet ii at proposed a new approach to the Cold War. Its title, which came to Friend Milton Mayer toward the end of the week in summer 1954 when the composing committee finished work on the document, has become almost a clichehttp://www2.gol.com/users/quakers/living_the_truth.htm

My read is that journalists want Hillary to fall, so Al Gore will “sense the need” to accept a draft.
