The Los Angeles Times reported today that State officials have warned the Governor that the likely deficit for next year has jumped from a few billion dollars to as much as $10 billion, threatening to wipe out the progress Schwarzenegger has claimed in getting the state's accounts in order.
This is news?
For more than three years now, I have been warning that the states finances were in worse condition than they were under the Davis administration and that the rate of state spending could not be sustained. This past summer, Senate Republicans warned that the budget was dangerously unbalanced and were castigated by the Governor for doing so. Senator Jeff Denham is facing recall because he refused to vote for a deficit that we warned placed California on a collision course with insolvency. Schwarzenegger has still not opposed that recall.
The day the budget was sent to the Governor, I warned on the Senate floor:
today we set in motion events that will require far more difficult and painful decisions starting just five months from now in what is likely to be a much worse economy.
I am afraid that with this vote, for the second time in a decade, this state is being driven to another Gray Davis-sized fiscal crisis that this vote makes inevitable for exactly the same reasons: Lack of restraint in good times combined with a lack of discipline in bad times.
The same day, the Governor said: I am pleased that the legislature has passed a responsible budget that protects California's priorities and keeps our economy strong. It was a challenging process but in the end our legislative leaders came together to deliver a spending plan that does not raise taxes, creates the largest reserve in history, and reduces our operating deficit after the spending vetoes that I have promised."

Time to turn out the lights? Come on over to Florida, We need more conservatives to thin out the Yankee Liberals moving down here to die..............
Do we dare comment?
(chuckle)
The welfare entitlement of California is larger than the State of New York!!
California is lost!!
They ain’t all moving to Florida, they are packing Virginia also!! Notice, Virginia went from a red state to a blue state. Pity!! when a left wing lunatic leaves an area he deems unfit to live they bring their politics with them.
Yes, it is.
Nice place to visit, but I would never want to live there again (I lived i San Diego for a few months back in the 1970’s).
The problem is that the libs, the ones causing the problem, are metastasizing to other states.
/grin
Well... Not sure at this point. Let’s see where it goes.
Why should he resist saying “I told you so?” I think it’s bloody good timing.
The same thing is happening in the GOP presidential primaries right now, except the extent of Slick Willard’s chameleon-like infiltration of the GOP would make even da Terminator blush.
Ahnold’s “Get into office and then go left” routine will be writ large if Slick Willard can beguile enough GOP voters with his Road to Ames conversion routine.
(chuckle)
Tom McClintock and the conservativer republicans of California were right then and are right now. Maybe the rest of the Californians will wake up if they have their nose rubbed in it.
Response: Radical surgery is obviously necessary.
Sort of like Illegal Aliens coming here from across the border. They messed up their own places, now they can’t stand it so they move to a new place and begin trashing it.............
We all know who Tom McClintock will endorse in this race.
In fact he already has made his endorsement.
It seems as though Kalifornia has legislated itself into the proverbial corner.
Enacting feel good laws that if throughly enforced will eventually make 90 percent of the states population have some kind of criminal record.
A record for violating anything from clearing useless brush from around their homes to protect against wild fires to wrongly punishing a child for violating rules.
All of these inept and inane laws take a huge monetary toll.
Must hire more and more state workers with big salaries to watch the citizenry.
I have lived all over the world and seen some really corrupt governments. However, I must admit that touchy feely Kalifornia is on a fast track to becoming a third world government that will eventually shut itself down under the burden of unenforceable laws and mounting debt.
Yep, he sure did.
As a Californian, I think this is great. Those idiots up there have voted in entitlements and ridiculous programs. Now there is no money. MAYBE they will foreswear their weekly car-washes and butlers and chauffeurs and so forth, just for the sake of the citizens.
Since there is no budget, they should go home.
Me too. Nothing short of a train wreck will get anyone's attention sufficient to make any tough choices and actual changes. I hope the wreck is spectacular with LOT'S of casualties.
McClintock told you so!
