A $104 million dollar hockey arena may be forced to remove hundreds of images of "The Fighting Sioux," the logo and nickname of the University of North Dakota for more than 70 years, if officials can't reach an agreement with tribal councils.
The university, according to a settlement last month of a lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association, has three years to negotiate an agreement with two North Dakota Sioux tribes Spirit Lake and Standing Rock to receive approval for the continued use of the "Sioux" name and logo.
If an agreement is not reached by 2011, the university will be forced to find a new name and logo.
The hockey arena has hundreds of "Fighting Sioux" logos laid into its granite flooring, imprinted on seating and etched on doors and other areas. If an agreement cannot be reached, they would all have to be replaced.
The Ralph Engelstad Arena is the home of the "Fighting Sioux" men's and women's hockey teams, which have won seven NCAA Division I championships, the last one in 2000.
The hockey teams sell out the arena's 12,000 seats for every game and have no plan if the university fails to reach an agreement with the tribes. The arena has thousands of images of the Fighting Sioux logo, but the settlement requires only some of them to be removed.

"The university has indicated that it intends to use the current name and
logo with the utmost respect and dignity, and only for so long as it may do
so with the support of the Native American community," according to a
statement by the NCAA, the governing body of collegiate sports.
It’s true after all.
Life’s Not Easy For A Boy Named Sioux.
They should change the name to the “fighting Hsu”....
Aw, isn't that cute. Liberals demanding the destruction of art they "don't like".
Englestad used to celebrate Hitler’s b’day. What a screwball.
Should change the name to the Suing Sioux.
Sounds like they need a bigger arena anyway. They should probably build a new, larger one on campus with plenty of high priced luxury boxes. If they start work now, they should be able to have it up and running by the deadline. he arena, which opened in 2001, is a privately-owned facility
The old one? Cut a deal with the tribes and turn it into a casino with about a 6000 seat performance hall.
The So Souix Me.
Woops trying to spell it Louisiana style. Don’t Sioux me!
Is that right? I don’t blame them for not wanting to be associated with that then. Maybe they can change to “The Fighting Huns” or something :)
The chickensht University of Minnesota says they will take a stand against playing the Sioux in any sport... except for hockey which is hillarious because of:
1 Minnesota is in Division 1 A in all sports. North Dakota is Division 1A in hockey.
2. Minnesota and North Dakota are major hockey rivals. Minnesota loses money for not playing North Dakota.
They backed off (school administrations tend to be cheap whores), but apparently the NCAA didn't.
If the Sioux say no, start talking to the tribes which were their traditional enemies (like the Crow) and see if any of them would like to be honored.
Did we (USA) name them Sioux? What do the Sioux call themselves? Could it be an English transliteration of some Indian name? BTW the word Indian coined from Latin when Columbus landed here (or down there) - he wrote back about the people as being “In Deos” or people in God ... “In Deos” became Indian ... India, the country, was known as Hindustan back then so he wasn’t confused as to where he was not ... they weren’t called Native Americans until the Department of the Interior named them that in 1972 ... (see what happens when you’re bored?) >grin< ....jane
