Seventy-seven percent (77%) of American adults are opposed to making drivers licenses available to people who are in the country illegally. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 16% take the opposite view and believe that undocumented immigrants should be allowed to get a license.
State surveys in Virginia and Kentucky show similar results.
Eighty-eight percent (88%) of Republicans oppose giving drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants. So do 68% of Democrats and 75% of those not affiliated with either major political party. There is little difference along gender, age, or income levels.
New York Governor Elliot Spitzer recently proposed making licenses available to people undocumented immigrants living in New York State. Spitzers plan attracted national attention at a Democratic Presidential debate last week when New York Senator Hillary Clinton was asked about the policy and stumbled through an unclear response.
The poll was conducted in partnership with Fox Television Stations Inc.
Clinton is the frontrunner in the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd was the only Democratic Presidential candidate to oppose Spitzers policy approach at the debate. However, several of Clintons opponents challenged her for failing to provide a clear answer. Clinton did indicate support for comprehensive immigration reform, a proposal that proved very unpopular with voters when debated in the Senate last June.
Other recent polls on immigration show that 59% of Americans opposed the Dream Act, a proposal that failed in the Senate last month. In California, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a state version of the Dream Act and 62% of the states voters agree with him.
It remains to be seen whether or not Clintons debate gaffe will weaken her chances at winning the Democratic Presidential Nomination.
Clinton has become the unifying theme of Election 2008. While it may gall some...

What emboldened Spitzer to believe he could get away with this move? Will New York's citizenry prove him wrong or right?
Will Sptizer become the 2008 Election Season poster child for the Democratic Party's twisted sense of America's best interests?
If there is no populist revolt against New York's Governor, polls don't much matter -- even from polling organizations I generally respect.
With so many states now demanding picture ID to cast a vote, I hope these things are completely different than a regular NY license. All this will do if not is give them access to the polls again.
In New York it will actually give them the vote. But I guess we need to get past those silly ideas of “citizenship” and national borders right?
77% is low. I only know of less then 1% and it is the same guys on every channel.
NY doesn't have the option of recall elections, and its Assembly has about 100 Ds and 50 Rs.
Most of the 19 9-11 hijackers had drivers licenses and what the Hell good did it do!
Politicians had better figure out which fiddle they want to play: Special interest or base support that got them elected. As all know, politicians take money from almost anywhere. That’s must be why Jorge does not look like the guy I voted for. Did he think the base would stand around with their fingers in their butts while he danced all over the stage for special interest? SMACK DOWN Jorge!....You look almost anti-American standing there with The swimmer and McLame. Did I vote for you?....Yes I did, but now all I find in my vote for you was an alternative to John Kerry.
Who’s moderate and who isn’t is beside the point. PC will ensure that illegals get their licenses because most politicians in NY (and elsewhere) are slaves to the constantly offended ethnic front groups.
Should we allow people who are in this country illegally to get a drivers licenses?
Yes 77%
No 16%
The Silent Majority isn’t.
The Government is deaf.
If that were so, how come shamnesty and the recent "Dream Act" were shot down? Politicians pandering is nothing new, but when their base is in an uproar besides a bunch of moderates and independents are also against it, they figure out which side of the bread gets buttered.
Between them, the 9-11 hijackers had 63 validly issued driver's licenses.
Eight of them were even registered to vote in American elections.
Under federal "motor voter" law, anyone receiving a driver's license automatically may register to vote.
Nothing but the "honesty" of illegal aliens prevents them from breaking one more law, and voting in American elections.
Under which alias? Under how many alias'? This is really about Motor Voter registration. They get a drivers license and they also get to vote. It's called Voter Fraud.
Has anyone ever thought about the need to provide evidence of insurance for these drivers?
Thanks for the pics. I’m surprised that folks still need to see them, and need to be reminded about voter fraud.
Branding their foreheads and inserting RFID chips below the skin are also better ideas.
“Wouldnt issuing a drivers license then make them documented? At least wed have SOME way of tracking them.”
DUH...NO
The “undocumented” term comes from the illegal alien enablers...There’s no such legal term in immigration law....they are illegal aliens..
How would they be “tracked” when ...
1. The ACLU would jump all over that idea?
2. The illegal aliens use false ID?
3. Other people’s REAL SSN are used?
4. Nobody is allowed to ask for ID?
5. Illegal aliens are “hiding in the shadows”?
6. New York City is a “Sanctuary City” and New York is a “Sanctuary State”?
7. Illegal aliens dont feel that they need a driver’s license to drive?
8. Illegal aliens drive without drivers licences, insurance and vehicle inspection/registration?
9. Illegal aliens run real fast?
7% of 300,000,000 = 21,000,000 that makes them the illegals, and ratmussen doesn't recognize illegals without drivers licenses in his polls.
