More than six years after retired United Airline captain Ray Lahr launched his Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) petition into the fate of TWA Flight 800, the FBI has shown himlikely by accidentone seriously smoking gun.
The Boeing 747 blew up off the coast of Long Island on July 17, 1996. One of the FBI documents received recently by Lahr and his attorney, John Clarke of Washington DC, details a communication that took place six days after the crash:
"On Tuesday, July 23, 1996, a representative from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) advised [the FBI] that after a visual analysis of both the videotape as well as a number of still photographs taken from various portions of the tape, the phenomenon captured by [name redacted] appeared to be consistent with the exhaust plume from a MANPAD [Man-portable air-defense] missile."
The FBI guy who looked at this must not have read it, or not have realized what it would reveal, says Lahr. Otherwise he would have redacted most of it as before.
Adding a new level of intrigue to the investigation is the fact that the video in question appears to have been shot on July 12, 1996, five days before the crash.
The earlier, unedited FBI document reports that a fellow and his friend on Long Island were attempting to videotape the sunrise when they saw and recorded a grey trail of smoke ascending from the horizon at an angle of approximately 75 [degrees].
So compelling was the visual that the fellow made a comment to his friend, heard on the tape, They must be testing a rocket. The fellow calculated that object was heading towards the Atlantic Ocean.
On the document Lahr first received, the story of the video ends right there. The next two paragraphs had...

Why did you trust the government anyway?? They will lie and cover up most things they don’t want us to know. This is just one of many. How about the Oklahoma City bombing? They have covered up the identities of other co-conspirators.
Another terrorist attack during the Clinton years which went not only unresponded, but also unnoticed. Yeah, the 90’s were the ‘good old days’ for liberals.
No proof yet, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there was a massive coverup by Clinton and Bush.
No it wasn’t. Why did the tail fall off?
They drove a truck with a gasoline tank spilling fuel out of it slow enough for the flame to catch up, and it NEVER exploded.
Then the tried to get the fuel air mixture PERFECT and did it again, NO explosion.
HMMMM. I've NEVER believed the "Official" TWA 800 explanation. I saw with my OWN EYES a video of a missile flying up to that plane the night that it happened. I know what I saw, I KNOW what a missile in flight looks like, day or night. I have not seen that same video since then, and I have really LOOKED HARD.
Haven't you ever heard of CB and shortwave radios?
Exactly. Achmed is sitting in his car at JFK, with his brand new Radio Shack scanner. He hears “TWA 800 Heavy, cleared for takeoff”. and calls Omar, out in his boat. “Omar, 800 has taken off. Stand by with the SAM!” Omar replies, “Allah Akbar!”, and the rest is history.
I sit outside on summer evenings, smoking a cigar, listening to ATC & the planes as they fly over my house (I live near LaGuardia). It’s not hard to track a flight, if you have an FAA Airport/Facility Directory. You can buy one online, probably. (I got mine at a pilot shop when I was taking lessons.)
The thought gives me chills every time I fly out of JFK.
LC
Yes I have. And? Please continue, this should be interesting.
My question to you: Do you know of any other crash investigation where as recovered aircraft parts were cleaned as they were uploaded to recovery/transport vehicles?
The TWA 800 pieces were blasted with seawater as they were lifted out of the ocean. This was documented by MSM film crews for the Talking Heads news hour.
Airlines fuel a plane for the destination plus a safety factor.
IIRC the safety factor is enough fuel for an alternate airport plus 1 hour.
The weight of the passenger load plus fuel load must be within a certain weight. If the fuel load to get to the destination plus safety factor plus passengers is too much, then passengers are bumped from the flight to get the weight down.
Airport altitude plays a role also.
I recall in the ‘old days’ when prop planes were grounded at Denver on a hot summer afternoon as there wasn’t enough ‘lift’.in the thin air.
My son works for one of the airlines and makes those calculations. He told me that it’s still a problem.
The short answer is commercial airplanes don’t usually take off with a full load of fuel.
No kidding. I can hardly get out of the house somedays without sweeping all the MANPAD ejector cans out of the way. /s

............ Practice??????
I read a lot of fiction, and an author I recently discovered is Robert Conroy. He writes alternate history and currently has three books out on the market, 1862, 1901, and 1945.
1901 is his first book, and it deals with Imperial Germany invading the United States to force Washington to hand over all of the territory we'd just acquired from Spain in the Spanish-American War. During this time period, the Germans had made demands of this nature, but the demands had died off after a short while and nobody ever thought anything more about it until recently when the decendants of Germany's top diplomats and military leaders of the time began releasing journals and letters that indicate that they were serious about the invasion, but decided that it would be too much of a logistical challenge.
1862 is his second book, and it deals with the British entering the Civil War on the side of the South over the Trent Affair.
His latest book, 1945 deals with what if Japan had not surrendered after the two nuclear bombs and we were forced to invade mainland Japan. There was a plot by Japanese officers to "secure" the Emperor and prevent him from ending the war, but the plot unraveled when one of the officers executed the commander of the palace guard, prompting the guardsmen to avenge his death by driving the militants from the palace. What if that hothead hadn't fired on the guard commander?
All I can say is, I am glad my husband is out of aviation.
Yeah, I found #108 very amusing. Trying to pick out a single target in the world's busiest air traffic corridor with a shoulder fired SAM that will home in on the first airplane that attracts it's heat-seeking warhead. Terrorists must be dumber than we thought.
Yes, an islamic terrorist attack!!! The commander & thief hid the terrorist attacks against this nation more than most realize. Flight TWA 800 and the Murrah Building in OKC...both terrorist attacks...both from the ME. Eyewitness accounts from both attacks. ME men around the Murrah building...missile seen moving toward flight TWA 800
Yes terrorism that no one claims will certainly cause terror.
Better yet, a group of numerous sailors accidentally shot it down and now the US Navy is covering it up. You should have enough sense to know that this could happen.
Neither are very plausible at all.
Since you apparently have knowledge about the fuel tanks, capacity, and consumption, please inform those of us on the board who are ignorant of these areas just how much fuel the tanks hold and how much should have been in the tanks for this trip. What’s that? You have absolutely NO EFFING IDEA what you are talking about? How about shutting up until you have actual knowledge. It’s really not too much to ask, is it?
