Car Crash Claims Wounded Iraq Veteran's Third Child

DALLAS -- A wounded Iraq veteran and his wife have lost a third child from injuries the boy suffered in a car accident on the way to visit his father in the hospital.

Three weeks after his siblings died in an Oct. 13 accident on the gusty West Texas plains, 9-year-old Tyler Johnson died Saturday at Children's Medical Center Dallas.

Army Spc. John Austin Johnson was waiting for his wife, Lisa, and their three kids to visit him at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio when the deadly crash occurred on Interstate 10 about 12 miles east of Ozona.

Lisa Johnson overcorrected the steering in her sport utility vehicle after encountering a blast of wind on the drive from El Paso, causing the car to roll at least four times, officials have said.

The couple's youngest children, 2-year-old Logan and 5-year-old Ashley, died at the scene. Tyler Johnson suffered massive head injuries.

Lisa Johnson was driving at the speed limit, traffic investigators have said, but they blamed the accident on a combination of high speed, drowsiness and powerful winds.

The three children were in the back seat. Logan was in a child seat, but the other two children were not wearing seatbelts.

Sgt. 1st Class Eugene Schmidt, a family spokesman, said Tyler survived longer than expected.

Johnson, who is stationed at Fort Bliss, has survived five brushes with improvised explosive device blasts during two years in Iraq, Schmidt said last month. The latest left him with a traumatic brain injury, and he speaks with a severe stutter.

Dear Lord please give comfort to this father who has served our country honorably. Such a terrible loss for him to bear. Be with the mother also in her injuries.

The pain that this poor wife and mother will have to endure is beyond comprehension. It's bad enough for Spc. Johnson to be wounded and helpless and to lose his children, but Mrs. Johnson has endured his absence and his wounds. Now she has to endure the loss of her three children because of the accident which she will surely blame on herself. Can anyone imagine what it would be like to feel as if you are at fault for the death of all your children?

Dear Lord, please give Spc. Johnson and his wife some measure of peace in the midst of this valley of death. Restore to them double for their loss. In Jesus' name. Amen.

There will come a day when they will wake up, and their first thought will be of the present morning and not of that terrible day of death. But until that time, there will be no greater gift than the testimony of hope from those who have suffered similarly and lived to see that morning.

When God seems distant, the arms of those who suffer with us can bring His love to us. Let those of us who have mourned the loss of our own children reach out to them, and be the Light of God in their dark night of sorrow...

Amen and Amen. I pray in agreement, in Jesus' precious Name. Oh Lord, please be with this dear couple. Bring them the comfort and peace that only You can.

We are but babies to our Heavenly Father, who He Nurtures, Protects, Comforts and Surrounds with His Love and Mercy.

Ps. 91:4

"He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His Wings shalt thou trust. His truth shall be thy shield and buckler."

Dear Lord, we beseech Thee, to wrap these parents in your Heavenly Wings, and bring them comfort. Amen.

God bless and comfort Army Spc. John Austin Johnson and his wife, Lisa. May He surround them, hold them close, and keep them in His loving, merciful, tender care and comfort, and help them to cope with the tragedies that have befallen them.

This is beyond heartbreaking. Praying for them.

I can’t imagine the anguish this couple is enduring. An American hero who offered his life to protect ours...and now he has suffered a loss greater than would have been the loss of his own life.

Only a loving and kind God could find a way to bring a measure of peace to this couple. And it is to that God, our God, that we pray for this wounded couple.

No surgeon can heal these scars. Only Christ.

“I’m pro-life, but that gets lost in these threads”

I don’t agree at all! A person without a kind heart or one who uses others misfortunes to further their cause is about “their life”.

Nothing gets lost.... not if you take the meaning of these threads and the prayers offered as they are intended.

And there is no reason to reply to me... I don’t intend to get into a word war with you.... my energy is better spent.
